Jet Z CQB. Compact, lightweight and effective. Absolutely worth the extra.

Leupold or Burris optics advise please.
Mr_Logic replied to Cernunnos's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
7mm08 is listed, for a 100 yard zero, and 140gr bullet at 2860fps. -
I can understand you being hooked. When I had my 22-250, I didn't have the chance to shoot a fox with it, but a few annihilated rabbits and the sheer noise of the thing without moderator, had me hooked too! Centrefire was a vast improvement

Safe needs to be to British standards, and bolted to a solid wall, and/or concrete floor. Regarding safety, Paulus remind me not to go shooting near you! yes, the bullet will hit the deck, and with careful thought you're OK. BUT, and it's a very very very big but - if you shoot off a prone bipod even slightly uphill, that bullet can go for a thousand yards easily! Even when you shoot 1,000 yard, muzzles are not at 30 degrees or anything to get the bullet that far!

Inconsistent Loads!!! HELP PLEASE
Mr_Logic replied to steveff1353's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Personally I don't lube the inside of the neck, but you certainly CAN do it - just a quick Google shows people doing it all the time with no adverse effects. I see it adding time and being a pain anyway, so I don't. -

The reticle is only true at one magnification, in my case 9x, which is all I used it on, 9x suits me just fine. I'll dig out the box again and have a look about the 6.5, but I expect it'll be in there. Even if it's not, get the rifle out and see where the shots go against the reticle, still be very useful. -
Inconsistent Loads!!! HELP PLEASE
Mr_Logic replied to steveff1353's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Yes, any powder clumping will affect the burn. You can lube the inside of the case neck, but if you do then you're going to need a full clean on the cases again before loading. Brass needs to be clean, dry and free of lube before you load, or you will have no end of grief. -
Blimey Ian, do you keep a tab on these numbers?!

Good going Jamie & Crew! Always good when it works out. Regarding .222 vs 22-250 for size of hole, as Jamie says dead is dead. I shot a fox with the Hornet the other night, only a vixen cub, no exit, shot at about 120 yards. Only sign of death was the glazed eyes and the slightly unconventional lying down position! Upon looking I could find neither entry nor exit, but I did shake her, and all was very liquified. And although I didn't see the entry wound, hand covered in fox blood says it was there somewhere! Had one with Deker too, that was about 65-70 yards, and again no exit. Ver

You have missed one key point of terminal ballistics, stopping power. If you take a projectile travelling with great speed and therefore energy, you need to ensure swift energy transfer to the target. This is what expanding ammunition is all about; slowing down the bullet as fast as possible to ensure maximum energy transfer to the target. Polymer tip bullets are a bit of a special case because as the velocity slows, the expansion is significantly curbed because the polymer tip fails to act as a wedge. Below a certain impact velocity (IIRC 1600 ft/sec) this fails to happen reliably which m

Leupold or Burris optics advise please.
Mr_Logic replied to Cernunnos's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Yep I zeroed for 100 yards, then changed ranges. With 22 Hornet the trajectory doesn't really fit the reticle, but by shooting a target at common ranges once, I know where to aim as I have a fixed reference point. For me, 150 yards = use 1st aim mark and aim low by the thickness of the 1st mark. Then at 200 yards it's take the first mark, aim high by about the thickness of the mark, at 225 yards is dead on the second mark. For more common calibres, there is a guide to where you should be with the marks. I really like it thus far, thin enough to use on bunnies but thick enough that you -
Most forces don't routinely allow 17HMR for fox. Instead they start with 22 Hornet really, although 22 Magnum would be enough. Kev I suggest you do some digging on the web, a rabbit gun and a muntjac gun aren't going to be the same calibre. Minimum for muntjac is a .222 realistically; rabbits are well dealt with by 17HMR or .22RF. Regarding suitability of 17HMR for fox, it's a piddly little round which is best suited to rabbits. It can kill foxes cleanly at close range with a body shot, or 120 yards with a head shot. Some people have pushed it to more, but they're experienced shooters,

Leupold or Burris optics advise please.
Mr_Logic replied to Cernunnos's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I read this thread originally and said to myself "Leupold". And today I went out and bought a Burris. I bought a Fullfield II 3-9x50 with ballistic plex ret. £299 which AFAIK is about the standard price for that model. Went out and zeroed it on my Hornet tonight, the adjustments were crisp and absolutely precise, optics are good and clear. Did some longer-range testing (normally 100 yards for zeroing) at 150, 200 and 225 yards. Bit of guesswork at 150 but everything was basically where iSnipe and the reticle said it should be, so I hit 3 shots in 3/4 inch at 200 yards, and 4 in 1/2 @ 225 -
Firing blank rounds on own land
Mr_Logic replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Blank firers are legal, so that would imply not a problem. Normally this is negated in any case by an open ticket, so I can shoot in my garden if I'm crazy enough, but since yours is range only it is an interesting point. My official answer here is a Hmmm.... Not Sure... can't be arsed to look up the legislation right now -
WHat do you want to shoot with it? Each tool has its use!

Ric, rules on competition and range regulations are not one and the same. Most all competitions bar you from using expanding ammo, but it's allowed on the range.

using a .243 sound moderator for .22-250
Mr_Logic replied to JackWard's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It's a right old can of worms, since moderators aren't defined in law. For example, I use my ASE CQB on my air rifle, too, and it works an absolute charm. Don't need it on ticket for an air rifle, although the accepted wisdom is I do because it's made for a centrefire rifle. But again, the law is very vague, as per bloody normal. -
Same mag.

It sounds like another major invasion of privacy to me. Name one other sport or legal activity where you must first notify the Police as a matter of course. I doubt there will be too many...

indeed. the Jackson Rifles-initiated discussion of this point is very well argued, and can be found Here -

Mr_Logic replied to JackWard's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Jamie, for licensing purposes it is, for proof purposes it isn't. Have a read of the Proof Acts, which are very clear on what constitutes a firearm, and thus needs proof, and what doesn't. -
using a .243 sound moderator for .22-250
Mr_Logic replied to JackWard's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
indeed. Manufacturers state the maximum calibre moderators can do. it is NOT a question of a proof mark, for reference, as moderators do not need to be proofed as they are not a firearm or part of one. Waidmann, in terms of which is greater pressure, you need to be talking volume of powder and bullet weight, therefore energy - 22-250 is smaller than 243 in every way. 30-odd grains of powder vs 38-45 grains, and bullet weights of typically 50 grains vs typically say 85, so obviously if something can handle the bigger calibre it'll work on the smaller one! -
using a .243 sound moderator for .22-250
Mr_Logic replied to JackWard's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No, the 22-250 doesn't produce more pressure. They're all fairly similar, and a mod will take a calibre as big as the hole in the front allows. Which means yes you can use a 243 moderator on a 22-250! -
long range shot on melon with parker hale .308
Mr_Logic replied to skany's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
great shot! 308 on a windy day that far out is a challenge! -
The Armed Police bit I can deal with, I have paperwork But yes, take your point on the locals. Luckily for me the main culprit is about 95 and doesn't care too much about animals as far as I can tell, it's just the noise. Still a pain though - I like America - out with a .308 all afternoon, we fired off God knows how many rounds, and within earshot of others just about too. Nobody cares, it's only a gun after all! Different mindset and a really refreshing one.
