  1. I shoot a 12, other half a 20. I've shot her 20 (which is a silver pigeon) and I really like it, despite it not fitting me. For carrying all day at a shoot or whatever, the little 20 has a lot going for it.
  2. Danny where in the country are you? Your firearms department needs a f****ing snotty letter about that. IF you can show good reason and a suitable place to shoot, then the HO guidelines and Firearms Act says they must grant unless you're a nutter, and you clearly aren't as they gave you .22LR. There is always good reason for 17HMR and 22LR - HMR for longer shots, and 22LR at night under the lamp so you can be quiet. I could see them saying pick between HMR and Hornet as they can do similar things, but even that is stretching it a bit because Hornet can be used on rabbits but you co
  3. Andy I think you need to open your mind a bit. 17 Remington is not personally my cup of tea either but some people like them. I can see merit in the 17 Fireball - good to 200, 250-odd and then dies off quick. All on not much powder - has its uses! About 22 centrefires, I don't think there is a good or a bad one; they have different uses. Perhaps the 222 is a bit pointless now, but that's about it; the others have their uses. 22-250 is also a small centrefire by your meaning; I am of the opinion that they are there to do a job, so the round should simply be appropriate!
  4. We're talking Condition A XYZ Condition B ABC Condition C 123 Spangle has wired crossed. Regarding permissions to shoot on farms - you may shoot on as many as you like; there is nothing to stop you so if your firearms dept are being morons, politely point out to them that they are being morons - that it is a free (ha!) country and that thus far the law allows you to shoot, but says they have to clear the land. it does NOT say they can opt not to bother checking the land - they have a duty of care to the public but they also have a duty of service to you. With your ticket,
  5. Definitely reload. Despite my loathing for brass prep, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Reloading means you can tailor a rifle and ammo to a particular job. You can save a lot of money, once you have found a load that works (until then it's outrageously expensive because you buy a full tub of powder, full packet of bullet heads, just to make 10 rounds). it's also very satisfying when the rifle prints a little bughole at 100 yards, and you know you have discovered something!
  6. Yep a grand would, if carefully used, get you a Hornet and a 22LR. Hornet can produce an edible rabbit, but you do have to hit the head. Equally, with the right optics, that is easy enough out to 125+ yards.
  7. Head shots on fox with HMR, and get a bigger bloody gun. You owe your quarry that much.
  8. I would avoid the 17HMR for Charlie - 22WMR hits much harder. The other option is Hornet, most FEOs will grant it no worries and it's better than either HMR or WMR for fox.
  9. The Lee Enfield action is easy to shoot fast and accurately, I was out shooting with my brother in the US, we spent an afternoon blatting pumpkins with his Indian .308 Lee Enfield. Not in the record leagues I'll grant you, but I sent down 10 accurate aimed shots at 100 yards no real problem. 150gr SPs made a hell of a mess of the pumpkin, too!
  10. 22LR and 22WMR 22LR subsonic ammo for quiet rabbit killing 22WMR 40gr JHP unless you can get the new 30gr V-max, will kill foxes nicely to about 125 yards.
  11. 30 acres would likely be enough for Hornet IMHO, your FEO might need a word! Regarding your points: 1. In theory you're doing the farmer the favour BUT they are letting an armed man on their land so be nice, ask if you can help out. Round here, with roe at least, we are shooting them often as vermin - they are a damaging pest. This is unusual so normally stalking for free is a serious boon, people pay lots of money for shooting deer! 2. Depends on FEO, some grant 243 for fox, some don't. Push him a bit, but you'll need a permission with regular 300+ yard shots to really justify it.
  12. Up close, 22LR is better. 22Wmr is the one though. And you'll need it on ticket.
  13. Tikka T3 .... what? What is the intended use? Both are good rifles so you cannot pick one over the other without knowing why you're buying a rifle at all!
  14. Don't get a heavy barrel one, and then you will be fine. I have had 2 Howas. the first was in 223 with the laminate stock and was fantastic. The second was a 204 and I had grief with it, but, a new stock and a recrown, and a f*** load of different loads later, I did get it shooting - about 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards. Big fan of Howa, they shoot very well as a rule, and I personally do like the Hogue stock. it's flexible up front but it never seems to matter for some reason, but it is the right size for my hands, it's non slip, and the balance is half decent, even with a moderator.
  15. That is good service. I sent a Leupold away for repair and modification, GMK delivered a 10 week turnaround time on that one. Pretty rubbish if you ask me, not sure if it's primarily them or Leupold, but 2 or 3 weeks would have been better.
  16. i like mine - it fits me, goes bang and isn't too bad for cleaning.
  17. I'll take Laminate where possible, big fan.
  18. 17 Rem Fireball would be the one I would look at as it is almost as fast as the 17 Rem, but uses less powder so makes the cleaning etc less severe. 17 calibres are issued for rabbits according to HO guidelines. Can't justify it, but I would like to try the 17 Fireball.
  19. if you want fox as well, then 22 magnum. If not, then HMR. irrespective of what's on FACs, do NOT consider the HMR a mainstream fox rifle. It's not. It's a rabbit gun, simple as. Yes you can shoot foxes with it, but not humanely at ranges much in excess of the 22LR.
  20. I'd have said about 200 yards. I'd also get .223 not .222, but I don't know what the availability of ammo is like for .222 in Germany.
  21. Know your weapon. And also know that for say a 243, if you pull that shot by what would be a few inches at 100 yards, it can travel several hundred, assuming there's no backstop. You NEED a backstop, and this isn't "know your weapon", it's "don't be a muppet".
  22. I've shot Canadas with rifles from 17HMR to 243. As has been said HMR isn't up to it, but you know my thoughts on that one Hornet works, but isn't as instant as a 243 or 223. Given that I know the land, 243 with a softpoint isn't going to be particularly safe, so my recommendation would be 223 with a v-max tip of the 40 or 50 grain variety. Suitably large hole, very forgiving, breaks up easily so nice and safe.
  23. If they don't mind then they bloody should mind! What is the point of a law which does nothing to combat people breaking existing laws, while making more work for the law abiding shooters? Simple answer there isn't one. Therefore, we should reject and fight any further impact on our freedom, this country has already lost, IMHO, the title of a Free Country. Too many pointless laws, too much surveillance, too many people with access.
