  1. Yep, no worries. As will a 39gr blitzking if you can find them.
  2. Ric, I think your theory is wrong. From what I saw with my 204 and what I read of the Yanks, who use this calibre a lot more than we do, the bullet blows up if you hit the animal in close - at longer ranges, the expansion is less violent and thus the bullet penetrates more. Therefore, I would be confident using 204 on a fox with 40gr ammunition at any range you can reliably hit him. In the real world, that's going to be 400-odd yards for the most part. Thing is, as a dedicated fox tool, I wouldn't go with 204. I like it as a long range crow/rabbit evaporator with occasional fox - that'
  3. C'mon, let's not get started on the foxes and rimfires debate, it's boring, it's been done to death. Deker, good shooting mate.
  4. No I was looking into one but decided 308 would do me fine.
  5. Definintely agree on the 26" barrel.
  6. They'll hit harder than a 223 in theory with a 40 grain bullet due to better BC. With the 40 grain, this is pretty much true, but I don't think there's a lot in it. Of course, you can't shoot muntjac with a 204 either. Ric, I remember seeing someone doing a 1:11 twist for a 204. Tbh 1:12 should be OK but the variances mean they don't all shoot the 40gr, and that is the ideal weight. Therefore, just a smidge faster and job done for me.
  7. One standard issue black sports sock, chop in half. Two small elastic bands, place sock over moderator/barrel fit, secure with elastic bands. Not 100%, but works a charm.
  8. And here we go again.... For the record, since I was mentioned... I don't have a 6.5x55, never have had, nor have I said otherwise. The closest I've come is a good look at the ballistics figures. Regarding .204, Deker was around for quite a lot of my 204 trials, so he did see first hand about that. And I don't think anyone said the guy had wasted money buying one. I've put my experiences of it there, you can have a read directly. I have no wish to get into any more arguments with Vim - been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
  9. Right then all the happy 204 Ruger owners... I'm an unhappy 204 Ruger owner. Or I was, I sold it. I bought it as a go-anywhere, do-anything rifle for fox, rabbit and winged vermin. I spent a very long time trying to make it shoot 40 grain bullets; it could just about cope with 40gr Noslers, but only just about. 40 gr V-max shot 6-inch groups, both handloads and factory stuff. It did shoot the 32 grain stuff very accurately indeed, but unless you have a longer barrel, you lose a boat-load of velocity. I chronoed my 32-grain load, which was a max load, and got about 3800 out of it, w
  10. Quite. I wouldn't get a 32x scope for a 308 apart from possibly for 1000 yard stuff, and then it certainly wouldn't be a Nikko. I would get a lower mag higher quality scope. I wouldn't get a VX-I either. Bushnell's 3200 range is IMHO better for the money. And as for recoil, anyone that moans about a 308's recoil as being horrible to shoot, well... my other half, who is 5' 5" and tiny, has no issues shooting a good hot lot load of 175 SMK, rifle's not heavy either.
  11. A while back I started a thread on "Ammunition . . ." about reloading WMR. General opinion varied from "No point" to "Yer daft sod". Now let's see. The only point might be to change the bullets, OK? WMR is .224 calibre. There are a LOT of 30gr .224 bullets on the market. If you want to find out how they perform in the field just do it, OK? DON'T moan. Buy some Berger 30gr Moly disulphide coated bullets, pull the dodgy bullets from the WMR factory rounds, reload 'em with 30gr ballistic tips and get out there and shoot the fu**ers. He who laughs last laughs longest. Ric Pray tel
  12. I've got an ASE JetZ CQB on mine, very good too. Not originally bought for the Hornet, it just ended up there...
  13. That goes against ACPO and Home Office guidelines, strongly worded letter from the BASC and/or lawyers would have sorted that one. You had shown Good Reason for those firearms, if the police have no grounds for refusal then (and I've not checked this so I probably should) AFAIK that is actually illegal. It is not the Police's job to decide which rifle you can and cannot have for a given job; it is up to them to make sure your requests are properly founded, sensible requests with no impact on public safety, end of.
  14. I realise being racist isn't exactly a great thing, but which statute actually made it illegal?
  15. As long as the police are happy with him and he's OK with making it official, yes this counts.
  16. there's a lot of basically milsurp stuff which is headstamped 223 Rem, which is fair enough. Only need to watch it if it's stamped 5.56 NATO
  17. made me chuckle, which is a good thing today. Not the best day at work in the world...
  18. Your previous thread was about shooting rabbits? None of the above are ideal for it. 223 WSSM - bag of shite, major barrel wear issues, accuracy problems meant it's basically dead. very rare, nobody really uses it. AVOID. 22-250 - good calibre for long range fox, BUT it does use a lot of powder so comparatively it's noisy and expensive to run. Recommended for fox, for rabbit? Nope! 17 Rem - good I guess but a lot of issues getting it working well. 17 Fireball is nearly as good but with much less powder, so less barrel wear and less noise. If I were going for a 17, it'd be that.
  19. I find Hornet is great on Charlie, with 35gr v-max, but I just have to remember that it's really a rimfire on steroids, and doesn't offer the same reassurance as a 'proper' .22CF.
  20. Well Spangle, apologies then, you're just going on what you were told. Looks like your firearms dept is REALLY screwy - no basis for that anywhere, not law, not HO guidance, or anything. Ultimately, only the exact wording of the ticket counts anyway, so all rather pointless.
  21. Spangle, afraid you DO have your wires crossed. Your a b c d stuff is just instead of numbers on the conditions; it has nothing whatever to do with the content of the conditions.
  22. 85 quid for a RIMFIRE magazine? He's 'avin' a larf!
