  1. Yeah the Nosler is very good, I have 150 in 223, excellent to work with.
  2. Your choices with that size of land are: 223 22-250 243 204 There are others, but they aren't really appropriate (22 Hornet, 17 Rem etc) IMHO, or too much hassle to worry about (wildcats) . 223 is the cheapest and easiest of those to run. It is also the least capable on fox, but the difference really isn't that much! If you are planning on shooting to about 250-300 yards, then 223 is perfect for the job. Rifle and ammo choice is plentiful; reloading is cheap and easy. You mentioned stainless synthetic - choices are Howa, Remington and Tikka, that spring to mind. 1:12 twist i
  3. Apologies for getting the 223 wrong The Scenar hit may not have been 100% square, so that accounts for the size of its dent. I was reading that penetration is largely due to velocity, so a faster projectile should penetrate deeper if they have the same amount of energy - might be worth trying it again with a 125gr SP going much quicker and seeing what difference occurred...
  4. They are actually OK for reloading, I just remove the crimp with a chamfer/deburr tool and then you can get the new primer in there. Not an optimal solution but it works. Ideally, a couple of hundred WInchester or someone cases = about 40 quid, would be a better solution.
  5. In Support of Thames Valley - I submitted a variation last week to change my 243 (which I might not do now, seems I may have got it working, but anyway...) and it was back today (though I did go and get it, mainly to avoid postal issues!). Much faster than usual, let's hope the improvement stays!
  6. 223, 22-250 or 243 will do the job for you quite nicely. All depends how far and how much punch you want - 243 hits very hard indeed, but even 223 will do the job perfectly well. For windy scenarios, 243 rules the roost, by a decent margin.
  7. Yes you can, 20grain JSP bullet. Hardly marks them.
  8. Personally I wouldn't worry about over-limit air rifles; unless you have a very specific requirement a 22 LR can do the job for less money and with more flexibility.
  9. Yes it's all getting silly. Luckily the local gun shop is getting out of reloading so I got a load of stuff at a very good price, but on the whole it really is getting mad.
  10. I've found that, too. Roe present a nice static target; munties never seem to stand nice and still, have to get ready for the shot for that instant when they pause. Nice deer Deker :-)
  11. Never saw any Bergers to try. I found, and still find, Remington 7 1/2 primers to be excellent, stick with!
  12. Dice, that's pretty much where I got to. My Howa was a picky little sod, but feed it what it liked and it did deliver the goods. Sadly I had two problems with 204 - one was the lack of anything to trim the brass (at the time nobody had the correct bits for the trimmer) and the second was that I didn't trust the 32s on a fox. Just about got it shooting Nosler 40s, but not to the same degree of accuracy. From what I read, seems to be borderline with the 1:12 twist - some work, some don't. Why they don't cut to 1:11 I don't know, would make life much easier!
  13. .223 WSSM I saw had very bad reports for its accuracy, not really worth the hassle given barrel life. 22-250 and 223 are both good. 22-250 goes further and hits harder but has more recoil and uses more powder. Barrels last far less time than .223 as well. My choice is 223, but it was originally made because of being able to use it at Bisley. Ultimately either works well - what kind of distance are your foxes?
  14. Sorry what exactly do you mean 'play with fire and you'll get burned'? It's this attitude of yours that you are so superior that is annoying me; I find it offensive and I would like you to refrain from it please. You keep telling me to shut up; my opinion is just as valid as yours. I really don't get the issue on this thread, I said all along I'd use a .308 because it hits hard, it's accurate and the recoil is limited. My brother used to shoot a .270, he said it was a bit of a pain. So given all of that, .308 all the way.
  15. I had a Howa, found that it shot the 32 Noslers best, but I could never find the 39 blitzkings to try. 32 BKs were pretty good too. In terms of powder, I used RL10X to great effect.
  16. Look at your past posts on other topics Mr Logic , you will find it is mostly you that gets abusive . Why ? You always trot out that YOU have the right to disagree, and you have but if you can't answer without getting nasty perhaps it would be better not to reply ? Actually, if you read my posts, you will find that actually I am stating my opinion, and that I never, ever say otherwise, except where the law is concerned when I deal in facts. Where exactly have I ever got abusive? I think you will find I am on the receiving end.
  17. I'm all for lively debate, I am not all for personal abuse.
  18. My argument isn't about experience, I simply want to know what your problem is. I just want to know why you think you have the right to be so abusive? I may not agree with you, I have the right to disagree. In terms of experience - have I shot a red? Nope, wish I had, but I haven't. Have I said otherwise? No. Have I said anything to suggest that, with reds, I am speaking from experience? No. In previous threads about roe deer, I certainly AM speaking from experience, so I say so, and that's why you may find me disagreeing - because I've been there and done it, and my experience doesn't
  19. I have a right to an opinion, and you know, what my opinion agrees with you this time round, so WTF is your problem?
  20. If you're not confident in your shooting, then stick with a bigger gun. I'd still say .308 though, not a lot it can't handle. I'd like to stay out of the 243 vs red deer debate, but hey ho... My thinking here is thus - 243 will happily enough kill a red stag with the correct bullet. Of that I have no doubt, and if I was headed to someplace to shoot a red (curse Berkshire for not having any) and all I had was a 243, I would load it with 100gr SPs, get it shooting right, and confidently head out to knock over said red stag. However... If I were shooting them regularly, or if I was accomp
  21. Then he's a muppet with no knowledge of the law. Suggest you head to an RFD that does know the law and will therefore not talk bollocks! Good luck
