it needs testing before you make a knife , any unknown steel needs testing . very easy to do . heat a section about 4" long get it non magnetic and plung it in oil or hot salty water until its cool keep it upright and still in the water/oil . the clamp it in a vice and hit it with a hammer if it snapps like a stick its cot a good carbon content - good for knives . if it bends its low carbon = no good at all . id want to test thses saw blade because i think they are probably low carbon modified mild steel with very low carbon in them . i could be wrong but i know most knife makers look for o

no not really its carbon steel so would rust if you leave it grotty and wet but no its good stuff , i have a carbon steel blade and im deliberatly not looking after it to see how it fairs , its done alot of stuff so far from cutting wood to helping break up a big red hind with out any rust or damage to it . the snow left little red dots on it but they wiped off the next day !! the pattern on it wont be a problem at all its just a surface manipulation , and i imagine will only improve with use !!

this one has been made for ron "forager " from here , iv made him wait to long for this like i have the rest of you that asked for stuff to be made . i hope he likes it . its perpose is utility and feild butchery , so i have made sure it cant go wrong with micarta i made from the cover for a snatch land rover that has been in action in iraq and afganistan ( i know they guy who improts buys and sells them ) so the handle will offer grip water resistance and pretty much any abuse you can think of but also good grip in wet or bloody hands . its hand forged 01 tool steel . with a flat grind and ta

What do you reckon to this as a tutorial?
midnight replied to hyperion's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
yeah its a great tutorial . il tell you now its the hard way and he misses alot of improtant stuff out but you WILL get a knife at the end of it !! swop the car fan for a £4 asda hair dryer and you can use a bbq as a one off forge . and swap out the wetstones for sand paper backed with a file and you will get what you want alot faster !! its a great vid that one , one that alot of knife makers would rather you dint watch !!
