Under XP the media player should play avi automatically, if not you may need a codec, right click on the avi and then properties you may find there the name of file type used to make the avi. Then look for the codec program to install to your media player

Start the computer as soon as you see the first screen tap F8 a few times, then on the next or third screen select safe mode, the computer will run up with only a basic system, once you get onto the desk top go to accessories / system tools/ system restore. From here you can restore the computer system to an earlier date when all was running well, restart the computer as normal if all is well it should run up ok.
