  1. Thanks everyone for the replys. She is just 4 months old and I take her out every night for a run on somelocal fields that seemed to be teeming with rabbits. She seems to sniff at the holes but apart from that does not show a lot of interest. I understand whatmany of your are saying regarding her age and I agree for full on coursing. But is there any harm in her getting some excercise whilst learning to be more attentive. At the moment she seems quite happy baiting larg dogs by running round them.
  2. Hello. I have never rabbited before though have a 4 month old bitch Whippet and would like to get her into it. I am not looking for a dedicated rabbit dog but would like to take her to my mates farm and get her a bit of exercise without embarrassing herself and me. What age should I start her off? Is it OK to just let her run after a few at this stage to make her keen? There are a few fields near me where there are signs of a lot of burrows. What are the best times to go and get a good chance of seeing a few. I tend o walk her near dusk and have seen the odd one but they scarper as s
  3. Hello. Hope someone can help her. I have had my new whippet pup for about a week. She is nine week old now. A friend of mine asked if I was clicker training. I understand the process but wanted to ask if anyone has had success with this type of training. When she is older I want to try rabbiting and perhaps some lure coursing. Will the clicker help here. Cheers Paul

  5. Good points. Is there any thing to look for in an 'Puppy Class' for w hippet. Picking mine up on Sat and want to find one quickl;y to start things on the right footing. Cheers
  6. Good point. Are there any other differences between grays and whippets apart from the size.
  7. Thanks to all for the sound advice. My wife prefers the idea of a whippet though i prefer the greyhound. The main attraction to the breed is the coat (my youngest is slightly dog allergic so should be fine with the gray) and the temperament. The bloke at the cumria rescue centre seem good and gave some good advice and assured me that he would only rehome a dog that 'he' thought was suitable. Just need to convince the wife now. Thanks again.
  8. Thanks for the info. I live near Blackpool o a bit far really.
  9. Thanks for all the replys. Seems as if there is no real straight answer. Labs seem to be favoured though. Most of the dogs on my shoot are labs so I think that may be the way forward.
  10. Hello all. We are looking for a new dog and have seen that there are quite a few ex racing greyhounds for rescue. My wife is keen on the idea and I am getting tempted (though really wanted a spaniel or lab for retreiving). OUr main concerns are Are they good with young kids? Can they be trained to return or are they a liability of the lead? What are their daily excercise requirments realisticly. I've heard very little with time of the lead to many miles a day? Am I likely to be taking on a nightmare dog as a rescue (the bloke I spoke to in Cumbria said the dogs are fos
  11. Cheers. Just one question, are the working labs easier to train than the others. I had a pet lab (quite a tall fella) that did the usual pet tricks but never really took to anything more. Likes the idea of the cross. Why do you recomend the labs?? Thanks again Paul
  12. Hello all. I have been shooting for about 5 years now and have decided to try my hand at getting a dog for a pet and to retrieve and the occational beat. A friend of mine has bred his cocker spaniel (seen it work and is very hyper but a good dog) with a lab (who I have also seen work and does well). My questions are; is this a good mix? What sort of size will they end up? Any idea if this cross will be hard to train as i'm a gun dog training virgin? Am I better going for a dog or bitch? Will the dog duel as a family pet with young kids or will I be letting myself in
