  1. I see what you mean , there is enjoyment in the job but first I get the serious bit out of the way clearing the bulk of rabbits as everybody knows if a farmer/landowner watches 20 rabbits run in off his stubble or paddock that will become 60 by the time he picks the phone up to gives you a bollocking . I have my enjoyment in the morning when I stalk at first light even if I get 5 or 6 I enjoy that sometimes more than 30 or 40 at night because of the challenge in the stalk and use of fieldcraft as I have said before in other posts its the best part of the day. Cheers
  2. We do this for the parish council who are incharge of the land, it is pest control and all the rabbits are used for food, my mate used a shotgun before he asked me to come along. Most of the rabbits he then wasted due to damage to the meat now I shoot the in the head he stops me when we get enough. I have had a rimfire for 20 years now doing various farms, estates, paddocks and gardens all with the view of controling the pests for the customer, show them you are doing the job they will recommend you to others, dont bother and you lose it. Even if they are half grown or full of young the job h

  4. Nice morning out, good read. Well done!
  5. I have only used one to despatch foxes at the end of a dig but not at range it not humane for the job.
  6. There have been many sightings around the cambidgeshire fens , I have see thing I cant explain at night but the x-files wouldnt come and investigate
  7. Its the best time of the day, no one there to bother you!
  8. Went out sunday morning for a walk round some permission, got up 03:45am to get there in time for the dawn. As I parked the car two rabbits shot under some logs the farmer had dumped so I knew that I could have some action, I got set up and started walking round the field had gone about fifty yards when I spotted the first rabbit so I got my walking stick set and took aim, smack right below the ears he didnt get up. As I started to push on round the hedgerow and I saw a couple of rabbits darting in quite away up the field, I hadnt made any noises so I thought maybe there could be a charlie ab
  9. When you speak to farmers they say they have hundreds of rabbits, a large proportion of them are young in spring/summer. They have to eat as much crop to get bigger so if you do your job well there is no problem plus their good for bbq`s and ferret food.
  10. Try this site! http://www.greenham.com/c/pl/83575/Round-Mouth-Shovel http://www.greenham.com/c/pl/83032/Round-Mouth-Shovel I used Bulldog shovels for twenty year only had 1 handle break in that time but replaced it with steel, didnt break again!
  11. I can second that, I used a logun light for a while for close range stuff with my .22 rimfire. Now I shoot with the max it has a better beam and you can get the brightness control aswell. Not a bad buy.
  12. Just found this on the web: Tularemia is a bacterial disease of rabbits that is transmittible to man, usually through openings in the skin. Hunters who notice small white or yellow spots on the surface of the rabbit's liver when they are field dressing it should discard the entire rabbit immediately. During the early stages of the disease the liver can appear normal, though the infected rabbit may behave oddly, move slowly or be easily captured. It is a good idea to wear rubber gloves when dressing a rabbit and it is important to always cook rabbit meat thoroughly. Tularemia is transmitted be
  13. 1. when you showed the dog the hole her mood would change like it was her time of the month, she would find the quarry, stay with it, when we broke through she would mix it if it moved. Never a false mark, her baying would change pitch when she was up to the quarry and away from the work she was a great friend to have by your side. 2. smooth white black & tan 3. bitch 4. jrt mate got father from Wales, dont know what line
  14. I applied for a job at DEFRA in 2003 taking part in the badger culling trials in the southwest of the country. I got a better job offer in the end locally so didnt go. They were going to cagetrap them and dispatch them with a .22rim pistol then take blood and tissue samples. I had the interview and a written test which I passed but the money wasnt that great and would have had to move, which I would have had to pay for. They even kept ringing me afterward to see if I still wanted the job.
  15. Sorry to hear of your lose LDR. It doesnt matter what type of dog you loose it rips the heart out, they are like family. RIP Billy
  16. I was lucky to be taken out by a friend of the family, he called me the son he never had due to the fact his sons werent interested in the game. I had dug to foxes for 20 years, started at 17 and had to give up a year ago, dont know evrything but who does. I miss it, aspecially not having the dogs around but keep in touch with old digging mates. If I were to start now I would find it difficult, most of the places round here are checked every week or have been shot out. I have been sh#t on by so called mate, you hear them at the gamefairs and shows bragging what they have dug, most of it is bol
  17. I bought a tracer max but just the light, got the batteries from ebay and the light, connection plus filter from Deben local stockist, didnt have to pay the postage then. Not a bad light gives out a good beam for my .17HMR and .22RIM not heavy the dimmers arent cheap but I might have to get one for the more lamp shy quarry on my permission.
  18. no its my 3rd one I think you might drum up some customers on here, looks like you do a good job. Top woodwork
  19. Now thats what I call a floating barrel . Nice work, have you done many or is this your first?
  20. I have dug near footpaths, rights of way and such, tried to time it so we were there in the week or early morning always backfilled just flattened grass left used a ground sheet for the earth so it all went back in and buried the foxes after it doesnt take too long. Sounds like these people were in a hurry to leave as if it wasnt the permission . Just a thought!
  21. That happen on my .22rim with a RWS mod (ally), took it back to the shop offered me a new one, I decided to go for the Parker Hale because it was steal. The rounds had been clipping the mod on one side thought nothing of it maybe a duff round then BANG blew the whole end off. Never heard a .22 sound that loud before.
  22. I have a 22 shotgun, its on my firearms ticket because the barrel is short. Shot mice and rats close range (10-12 ft) in barns and outbuildings, had put .22rl plus shorts through it for dispatching foxes at the end of digs. I have always been able to get the CCI shells, they come in a pack of 10. Dont shoot it much, might take it of my ticket for a FAC air rifle.
  23. I have a Logun lamp, use it with my 22 rim. Before you say " Not got the distance" you are right, the beam is limited but I was taking rabbits from 10-50 yard from a landrover window on scrub land and didnt need the power. I have a Deben Tracer Max for longer range so its horses for courses, I tried the Tracer Max on the same scrub land and the rabbits wouldnt sit, too bright for them however the logun has paid for itself just on that piece of land alone.
  24. Thanks for the advise, I will remember this when looking for one. Cheers
  25. Very interesting, just shows whats around after you leave. Is the camera set off by motion sensor? Would like to try one out on some of the places I go. I might be worth baiting up an area and wait for charlie once it gets confident.
