I breed livestock and you need to take into consideration the rearing costs to try and cover the costs of rearing a litter. Electricity, quality food and lastly time all need to be taken into account. £200.00 over ten years is nothing considering how much sport will be attained by its presence in the field. Good luck with the sale. Where abouts are you based?

GWP tend to do that after a while! A friend of mine had two kennelled from pups (homebred and from the same litter) and one day he got home and one had ripped the others throat out and they were seven years old. They are bred to have that streak and the closer to the german imports you get the more game sharp they tend to be. Great noses though!

Realistically my budget is as much as is realistic as it is for most people, if I see something I like I will have to save up and get it. Thanks for everyone's recommendations I'll have a look at the ones suggested, Jakk

I think like any animal its about rules and routines. I think if you can create respect from the dog then it is workable. I have a friend who worked salukis with his fal con with great success and he said he thinks salukis are naturally respectful of falcons (they are the only dogs the arabs dont dislike) I know someone else who did this in very enclosed countryside with success too but it was by fault then intention he started doing it. I came on here because you guys know dogs better then falconers How did the bloke who did it in very enclosed countryside manage it? What dog did he u

Without a dog the hare flushes nearly always in a straight line the hare runs at half speed, the falcon gains height, stoops, hits the hare in the head, game over personally its the sporting equvilent of watching paint dry

Buzzards eating poults
jakk replied to billbroon's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Believe it or not i know a keeper that leaves waste meat on the platform and the resident buzzards never bother with poults and keep all other birds of prey away. Another shoot 'discourages' them and is in a constant battle because shoots as we all know are cra king places to live and with no competition they are even more attractive. -
I want to use a lurcher to keep a hare moving for a falcon to pursue. Its quite a hard branch of falconry to get right however due to the complexity of the situation once youve caught the hare and you have two wound up apex predators vying for the hare they have worked hard to catch and both creatures could get jealous especially considering jthe falcon will have hold of the hare and the dog will have to wait for any reward. I'm hoping the collie brain power will give me a dog that grasps the situation fast as ultimately the dog is a secondahry factor in the sport.

What would the main difference between a collie x greyhound and a collie x saluki. I'm looking for a dog that will turn hare but not be fast enough to catch it? What i want to do is entirely legal but not something i would like to disclose on a open forum.

I have two short legged JRT, One from the off showed amazing talent on rats he has accounted for hundreds and has only recieved one bite however the other JRT (litter brother) has never even shown a interested (this could be in part down to the fact that the first was encouraged were as the second wasn't really shown a rat until much later on) they have great temperements and can keep going all day. I've been out with a lot of dogs but if you want a dog purely for rats then I'd look no further. I'd love a pup from my JRT so if anyone has a bitch they are looking to line let me know on; Jakk

Guys set up a platform in the middle of a open field and throw your guts etc on there while your poults are just out buzzards will always take the easier option. Buzzards as as species are becoming much more predatory like their cousins the american red tailed buzzard. This is what my old man has done for the last few years and it gives the poults a fighting chance without resorting to illegal measures. If your shoots are holding buzzards then it means that if the buzzards were to disappear all that would happen is that another pair would take over the territory.

This gives me hope. My J.R's are both 8 (9 this year) and have just got back into ratting again after a 2 year break due to moving around the uk. I hope I can still be doing it in 6 years

please can I come and shoot you????
jakk replied to hollie.vincent87's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
You'll be lucky to get out with falconers and austringers now unless you can get in touch with some of the lads flying hawks which isn't really falconry per'se -

I turned a piece of wood into a mini baseball bat shape about 3/4 of a foot long I drilled the end (the one you don't hold) and got my old man to fill it with lead now when I'm ferreting or longnetting I grab the rabbit, put my foot over the hole, hit it on the back of the head (atlas joint), throw it into the field complete with net (within view so you don't forget it!) and use a new net out of my pocket to net the hole up. I can neck using my hands but only do it when I have to, all the best, Jakk

To be honest I'm a ratter at heart I work my J.R's on them with quite a bit of success. I have also been out numerous times with a keeper in North Yorkshire digging foxes and enjoyed it thoroughly, His dogs were Patterdale crosses that he and a few other keepers had bred between their various dogs and they were bred the best dog to the best bitch without any hang ups of whether the end product was pure because the pup's were either kept back or given to friends and not ever for profit. I do like Plummers and will source a few in the next few years purely for ratting but I do understand why p

Surely it is our job to preserve the working side of the Plummers? I too believe they were bred as ratters looking at their shape etc. Its not the be all and end all if a dog doesn't go to ground it makes sense to buy a patterdale etc for that job to me. If a terrier excels at ratting then use it for ratting. Would you buy a Ferrari to go rallying? or a cocker spaniel to work as a pointer on a grouse moor? of course you wouldn't you use the correct tool for the job in hand.
