    The 40' terrier locator is way to big to put on a ferret, its three times bigger than the ferret locator about as big as the ferrets head.

    Thanks again, I've got plenty if experience with people and managerial skills which will transfer. The practical experience will be harder as calling my hobby of hunting pest control experience is far from it. If I decide to give it a go it will be on the side of that I do now, and I'll approach some local companies to see if they're interested in a free pair of hands. Best courses?

    Had a bad outbreak of mite the other year, can't buy duromitex any more, tried the powders, soaks and sprays and didn't do a lot. Used a blow torch for several days With the other treatments and still didn't shift it. I had 5 gal of creosote of the Internet delivered for around £30 and sprayed the inside of the chicken shed, made new perches and nest box and creosoted them too and haven't been troubled since. Didn't bother the birds at all, chucked the first weeks worth of eggs away to be sure they didn't taste. Also got plenty of creosote left for any other wood in the garden.

    Khaki Campbell's are laying better than the hens, two ducks = 2 eggs a day. They take them selves into the hut I put in the chicken run at night and so far haven't made too much mess. They are though escape artists, crawling under fencing and squeezing through sheep fencing and eat like horses. Very impressed with them.

    Chickens in the veg patch do more damage than good as they scratch around the soil tearing up young plants and pecking at the leaves of brassica, onions and leeks. In my experience they'll eat small slugs but not big ones.

    Thanks for the replies, found some khaki Campbell's but I'm going to have a look at the local market tomorrow to see if they've got any there first. I'm wary about the mess but they've got about a 1/4 of an acre which I'm hoping should be enough to stop them churning it up. I've split the hen run into two for now with a sheep hurdle between the two in the hope that it'll reduce the amount of fighting once I take the hurdle down and loose them into the garden. Cheers

    Cheers Pauly, I'm only going to get a couple. I kept one some years ago when I had a smaller garden and the mess was considerably more than the chickens as you say. But I've got a bigger bit of land now so I'm hoping they wont be quite so noticeable. I was thinking of putting an old hen hut at the end of the chicken run which is paved with slabs and keep them with the chickens, are they likely to use it or just sleep and lay in the run?

    I've already got chickens but I'm thinking of getting a couple of ducks for eggs, any suggestions with what type and housing?

    Ordinarily my hob is the steadiest ferret in my court but if I dig to him and pull him out on a live rabbit he will nail me if I try to take him off it, if its dead he doesn't care. Once off it though he's keen to carry on if there's more left to get.

    Been out with my hob and three Jill's today on some big warrens, the Jill's were given the run around but the hob nailed two in a stop end and was latched on to the side of another as it tried to force its way out of a small bolt hole. I know if I put the hob in and there's a rabbit home he will find it but he is one for grabbing hold and killing if he can but not bolting. I'm not the quietest ferreter though so its probably my own fault for making them not want to bolt. The mk3 doesn't help,I'm sure the bleeping puts the rabbits off bolting as well.

    Mine are vaccinated when pups, then one booster a year later then that's it. If your worried about Leptospirosis this can be given as a vaccination on its own. If I remember right though I'm sure I was told it only lasts for six months,

    Bunyys, I take your point but i was refering to serious faults. Re the manic behaviour of mine, I put it down to a few things amongst which the poor socialisation is right up there. Im not sure what you mean by 24 10, but if you thought I left it in a kennel all day as a pup then that was far from the case. Like I said earlier his practices and the ethics of producing dogs on such a large scale are a matter for each person to make a decision about. I know what I will do in the future but it's up to the individual to decide. Atb

    Then if you haven't the time to socialise the pups, employ somebody to do it. If you can't cater for the number of pups, breed less !! Couldn't agree more.

    Re breeding collie cross greys, I believe the collie is as much if not more Important than the grey. Ex track greyhounds are easy enough to come by but sound balanced Collies are not as common. If you put the wrong type of Collie in you stand to have a lurcher that's neurotic and too manic to live with. Would Mr Hancock breed from injured bitches, I don't believe so as it would be a bad advertisement for his stock, as we all know most people who know jack shit about Hancock dogs are quick to criticise and any hint of him using poor breeding stock would be jumped all over and publicised on all

    I've got a 3/4 dog that'll be three come December. I've put a lot of work into his training and he will use his nose to find his own game, work with a terrier to bushed game, work with ferrets, retrieve to the shotgun (but not pigeons) and he returns live to hand. He's not worked out how to lamp yet but this season may see to that as he was improving by the end of the last. He is though quite a challenge, from the day I got him home he was nervous, he would cry and howl all the time he was in his kennel and if you raise your voice or give him a clip he's terrified and if pushed I suspect he'd

    I started with pigs last year, had 2 saddlebacks then 2 saddleback x middle whites. You need a county parish holding number and be registered to keep pigs with the local authority to keep pigs on your land. You have to notify defra when you move the pigs to and from your land and you will need to tag or tattoo the pigs when they go to slaughter. They will clear any brambles or nettles for you in no time, they need fresh water all the time and the main cost will be the feed. It's against the law to feed them scraps from the kitchen.     Does anyone know of Gordon Richards. Gordon lived on the ouskirts of Derby and bred borders and russels. He must have been 70 when I brought a border off him about 7 years ago. The dog has been a superb worker and I need to plan for another. Ive been calling the number I had but get no answer, If any one can pm me a contact number or a number for anyone that may have taken on his dogs I would appreciate it greatly, his kennel name was nanrich.     Nope, the dog can be out working for hours but when I pull up back at home he will whine to be let out of the car. Then he knows what time feeding is and start to whine, likewise he could have been out on the lamp the previous night and out ferreting in the afternoon but at tea time or the time he would have gone out for a walk had he not worked he will start whining. He's a quarter collie and fixates in things to the point of obsession, no other dog I've had has whined like this. So yeah I expect a dog to let me know it needs to go out but this is something else, you've either got a lot more

    Mines 2 now and whines whenever he's left or hungry or wants to go out... Does my head in. I've had plenty of dogs (not just lurchers) and they seem to do it a lot more than others. Maybe particular crosses are worse than others?
