Gunsmithing Question - Firing Pins.
SportingShooter posted a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I had a bit of a confidence knock on Saturday when out shooting. I had two misfires in a row, with different ammunition out of my normally reliable Side by Side, the right barrel to be precise. I know it could be one of a few things, not least of which either a weak spring, broken pin or just the pin housing is dirty. I'm quite happy to remove the pins but this gun has "bushed" firing pins set into the breech face and a three pin spanner is needed to remove them. Anyone any ideas where I might get hold of one? Thanks SS P.S. Pins are set in like this; -
Woodcock-nice to see them back
SportingShooter replied to tegater's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Seven risen and five shot today. I had two of those, but unfortunately, not a left and right! Seem to be quite a few around here at the moment. -
About 12 weeks seems to be the average time that people receive their renewal packs.

This thread is a little bit neglected... There are quite a few birds around here now, Last Saturday, nine put up and four shot, the Saturday before seven rose and three came down. Yesterday only four seen but on ground that doesn't see that many even in the best years. None shot. All in the south west Wales area. -
Right handed and left eye dominant
SportingShooter replied to kevmag's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Save from buying yourself a "crossover" stock which are quite expensive, find what works and maybe a few small improvements to the gun, like mentioned above, the luminous beads, see if that helps you shoot with both eyes open. Failing that, could always try with both eyes closed -

You can use whatever bullet head you want on Wildfowl, be it lead, copper, brass or any hybrid of those. Doesn't matter where you're shooting them either, you could quite legally shoot Geese whilst in season on the foreshore with a lead bullet from a rifle if you so wish and have the appropriate permissions. Gotta love Firearms legislation. Canada Geese specifically are on the General license but you have to satisfy the conditions of the general license to consider them "vermin" such as they are damaging crops or proving detrimental to livestock. Outside of the general license, then you

Well if they refuse you, then your money is returned anyway and each application is taken on it's own merit each time be it a grant or renewal Your criminal history and associates are more interesting to police than where you've lived. The majority of the time they only ask to ensure they have the right person should they dig up old information which shows a different address.

If you have the condition on your FAC that covers you to shoot them along with the landowners permission then fire away. They're in season at present so no issues there and strangely, you can use a lead bullet to shoot them, whereas with a shotgun, it would be non toxic stuff only.

Can't see why it would. Matter more where you are currently living, in what circumstances and your security arrangements rather than where you were registered to vote in 1989

Shotgun stock too short? advise needed....
SportingShooter replied to bullmastiff's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
i didnt think you could put steel through chokes more than 1/2 anyway no matter what size? You're right in that's what most people will tell you when you go to a clay shoot or even some gun shops, but the detailed cartridge manufacturer's and proof house advice I've read says it only causes a problem if the shot is larger than No.3 with modern standard or high velocity loads. Since steel became popular, the manufacturers have encased the shot in a very thick plastic wad to protect gun barrels because steel is so much harder and won't deform like lead will when compressed at the choke. -
Pull the trigger and nope.... nothing!

One thing you haven't mentioned is how well you shot with the gun as it is and whether it was uncomfortable to shoot? As said, you can buy extensions that slip over the butt of the gun which means there's no expensive gunsmithing involved. As for the steel shot, ideally the gun should be proofed if the loads are "High Performance" steel. Standard velocity steel can be used in normal barrels without any problems as the shot is contained in a thick wad until it leaves the barrel. The chokes shouldn't matter as the official advice by the cartridge manufacturers and proof houses is -

If you're stuck with those two choices then the Remington any day, but like Greg says, shop around for something second hand like a Benelli or Beretta, see what you can find. -
Do i need a certificate???
SportingShooter replied to PoppythebeaglE's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
This is a contentious issue which confuses and frustrates a lot of people, including myself, Again, it comes down to what policy your individual police force regards as correct as there is nothing in law to stipulate either way, There is what is known as "The Estate Condition" which states that anyone over 17 can borrow a rifle from the "occupier of private land or his servant" meaning that in its strictest form, it has to be the occupier or his gamekeeper, estate manager etc who you borrow the rifle from. However, in Home Office guidance to the police regarding this subject, it st -
First Firearms Certificate help!
SportingShooter replied to danielbickle's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Having seen the majority of the "Fox as Vermin" threads over the years, the overwhelming conclusion which normally takes at least three weeks to reach is usually that; There is no definition of the word "Vermin" in law, There is no case law or court cases that have been brought because someone has shot a Fox with only Vermin listed on their FAC, If it states Vermin on your FAC, the likelihood of you being prosecuted and convicted is extremely low because there is so much ambiguity nation wide with individual police forces interpretation of different wording; And finally, no one -
It depends whether you spend any time in prison or any other custodial sentence and if so, how long that sentence was. If you spend more than three years serving a custodial sentence, you are banned from owning firearms for life. If you spend between three month and three years the same, then you are banned for five years. Anything outside of those parameters depends on your local police and ultimately, how you live now. SS

Well I would have disclosed that I was arrested for GBH which resulted in no further action, but the strict wording of the application form asks you for Convictions and since you haven't been convicted, you should be fine. The FEO may ask you about it when they pop around, but if they ask why you hadn't put it down, refer to the original wording.

Safety catch causing misfires
SportingShooter replied to Jimy1971's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Could be a number of things. When was the last time the inside of the action was cleaned? It may be that the safety mechanism is loose and is being re-set by the inertia or recoil of the first shot. If you're not happy taking the stock off yourself, maybe ask someone you know or a gunsmith to have a quick look at it. -
Did they say what sort of permit? Can't say I've heard of that before.

Better to declare any involvement with the police, even if you weren't charged or reprimanded
