.17Hmr Bullets

How is the crown on the rifle looking? Other than that, must be a bad batch. -
.17Hmr Bullets
SportingShooter replied to joe perthigwynion's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hornady and Winchester for me. Agree with Snap Shot, dirty barrel as I had a problem with mine being used to shooting a .22LR. Could just be a dodgy batch as you say but strange for the rifle to shoot them at double the group size. Have you checked that all mounts and moderators are tight and the barrel is still free floating? -
About as good for both as you'll get

Cannot Get A Decent Group .223
SportingShooter replied to fiona22's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
One other suggestion if everything else has been tried and you're comfortable shooting would be the crown on the rifle is damaged or deformed. If you're flinching at the thought of recoil, which isn't too bad on a .223, then without aiming at anything in particular, just the backstop, fire off a good few rounds so you aren't anticipating the recoil and get used to it. Then slowly begin to vaguely aim, increasing your concentration slowly until you are happy to fire it at maximum concentration. -

Folks, I've just had this consultation through in an email from BASC which I think should be shared and completed by as many as possible, Please take a look at the following page and the link on it, it may affect our legal use of firearms yet again because not enough is done to control those illegally trading/using them, so worth a go surely, Link - http://www.basc.org.uk/en/media/key_issues.cfm/cid/5A679161-2463-4C58-A7940A313F7CFE14 Regards SS

.22 Allowed But .17Hmr Not Allowed
SportingShooter replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It sounds to me as though they haven't inspected the second piece of land at all and have no intention of doing so again. They are both rimfire calibres, both are capable of ricochets and one is not infinitely safer than the other. I wouldn't take it lying down and would be contacting whichever shooting organisation I belonged to because to me it sounds like a) they're trying to fob you off or b ) they have confused the calibres with a .17 centrefire. Couple of other things on this thread about FEO's saying "no chance" about having a certain calibre because of lack of experience, i -
Another old trick is to stand the end in diesel for a few days. I've used that a few times and it works. Boiling water may have exacerbated the choke rusting and fusing to the threads. Leave it in the cabinet standing in diesel/diet coke/WD40 for a week or so, can't harm anyone and it's still shootable with a good all round choke.

Yet Another Fac Question On The Forum...
SportingShooter replied to kruby01's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
There's no limit to the amount of FACs held on which piece of land but some departments won't allow in excess of a "certain number" What that number is we'll probably never know, but two FAC shooters for a piece of ground is fine. SS -
He's got the ground for a .50 up there too Massive swathe of hills.

Good stuff Walshie, just wished they operated out of more ranges rather than just base themselves at Bisley

Fac Application Process
SportingShooter replied to 03milesR's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you know of anyone with firearms already, it wouldn't be a bad idea to seek their guidance and try and use the rifles as much as you can. That helps regardless of the process as you can never have too much experience when it comes to any sort of gun but particularly rifles, that are capable of reaching very long distances if not used properly. As with most new FAC applications these days, they may insist that you have a mentor to guide you through the first few months of owning a rifle, so it may be handy to have a name of someone who can fill that gap. Other than that, have a -

I've taken to using carburettor cleaner in most of my guns to get rid of carbon build ups and plastic. Works a treat.

I'd start by looking at the major rimfire ammunition manufactures such as CCI, have a look on their website and see who their UK contact/importer is. Might help

May sound like a daft question, but how often is it cleaned? A good gunsmith friend of mine always told me never to leave oil in a semi-auto because it will eventually just clog everything, so if there is oil in there, then clean it and make sure its completely dry.

In all honesty to make things easier for you, I would be looking at two rifles, a .22LR and a .223 purely because then you have everything covered from Rats to Roe (in Scotland)

.22 Hornet Buying Help
SportingShooter replied to Young gun 96's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
CZ Modern manufacture and a very reputable name in vermin rifles. -
What sort of quarry are you hoping to use it for? I'm assuming Foxes and ground vermin, both of which it's perfectly adequate at dispatching, Plus sides would be a very flat trajectory, very fast bullet and a relatively safe round as the bullet is so frangible it will break up on impact with a blade of grass. Downsides would be the tiny size of the round means it will be affected by a decent wind more than a larger round and factory rounds are quite expensive along with a reputation of being a "barrel burner" because of its very high velocity. Not that it makes a difference to fie

Browning X Bolt. Info Please
SportingShooter replied to dax17's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I've used an X-bolt a number of times in .223 which belongs to a friend. It's a stainless synthetic version which I quite liked with the relative lightweight and durability. It lived up to Browning's reputation of being well built which is what i'd expect from them really. As for ammo and distances, that will really be down to the individual rifle. Every rifle is made slightly differently and will like different ammunition combinations better than others. Your best bet really is to buy three or four boxes of different brand rounds and see how you get on. For foxes in .22-250 th- 2 replies

Firearms Question Please Help Me
SportingShooter replied to Stuart1985's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
All he has to prove is "good reason" to be owning a firearm for a particular task. There are plenty of examples on here where members have been granted an FAC for pest control work and by it's nature it has to be an open certificate. If it's a requirement of your line of work and a police force prevented your development or ability to do your job then they'd be leaving themselves wide open to a legal case. If they begin to get funny about granting it, then a reminder from one of the shooting organisations about whether the police have any statutory power to impose mentoring or restr
