  1. top pic just thrown 5 clear eggs, pic no2 5 young,no 3 laid 5 ,3 hatched,2 doin ok at the mo,bottom pic 5 young, these are doin well ,the young are always full crop on inspection, the border type hen in top pic was a spare hen that I have, she is building again at mo,goin to try for a nest of mules with her in the small outdoor pen, atb.
  2. its a real test, leaveing the nests alone I have had the birds all these years and still cant keep out when there nesting,if we go away and there still nesting that's even worse, its a funny old game atb
  3. that hen will prob start building again within the week,if you have thrown the eggs atb
  4. how many clear clutches delboy just one ,first round is clear a lot of the time ,goldies seem to come in condition later mate, good luck.
  5. concrete Robert,as been said a strong mix and a good finish for swilling out and your sorted, hope you keepin ok mate,
  6. might be a split litter russ if that's poss with birds, sure someone will know on here
  7. I would ,if you don't need to use him on any hens,i like to see both birds on the pan feeding youngens, that's if the cock is ok with the eggs and sitting hen, which most are,but that's just how I keep them,he will feed the young when the hen goes for a second clutch also
  8. them kit boxes are a real smart job, nice to see them kept right
  9. I,ve got a border hen with 3 chicks and 1 egg,sat out in the flight no nest material ,the cock kept pulling it out the pan, they are doing fine, just under the plastic roof,i have put a small bit of ply on roof above for shade in case we ever get a warm day.as been said its the getting wet that kills them off.
  10. Had a pair before but never got a succsesfull nesting out of them, the cock escaped and i gave the hen away afterwards, but i do have a pair this year but they ain't doing much and i think watching them that it's the cock that's not driving her to nest as such,so the jury's out with them at the moment. The chaffie hen will mule and hybrid with canaries or finches but the cocks can only produce with their own kind as with the male Bully.. So if you ever breed a Bully x Chaffie you will be the first ever person to do so thanks for reply ,I once reared a chaf hen but it was very unsteady and
  11. yes bunnys think I recall a pic of a chaf mule and it was very drab colour, but I cant remember which way it was crossed, but I have never seen one, thats what got me thinking why,cos chaffinch are bred by some in smart colours I think. some of the british bird men might know abit more,?
  12. 100% will take pigeon, I have seen my pigeons leave shed and spar take them in the air, then down in field behind me for its kill, good to see a spar in action but not good for the pigeon
  13. I for one never knew the old gins to have rubber jaws, but not been into traps I didn't know this was the norm these days,so this has been a good read,i bet they are a great method of pest control in the right hands, think people like myself who don't use traps expect to see leg/foot damage ect, which does not seem to be the case ,atb to all you trappers,
  14. have you bred any straight chaffinch in the past fireman,if so are they hard to breed, atb.
  15. just a thought as I know very little about breeding mules, but have seen a lot over the years, why is there no chaffinch mules or hybrids for that matter, are they hard to produce or just not a nice cross, the chaffie has a nice song and colour,or is it because they rear on live food to some extent.
  16. perhaps leave goldie cock in a small cage inside open flight, singing might get some birds back if they still around, dont know if it would help,
  17. gutted for you,get him a canary hen, still time to mule this summer ,if you get a few mules things might not feel as bad, did the cat get out there alive
  18. if they turn out to be a pair that's a result, would have thought there would be a bit of falling out with two males, this time of year,as said put some material in and a nest pan, good luck
  19. perhaps that pic is in bad taste jd,perhaps all game or vermin should be dispatched soon as poss,no photo of live stuff ect, after all the camcorders in the 80s started the rot in this country ,when some in the game did not conduct themselves in the right way,and then went out the game as quick as they came in,just a thought from someone who remembers the days when joe public nad little idea about hunting and cared even less
  20. spot on I was thinking along these lines, but sadly didn't have a clue how to explain myself, nice one mr Lloyd
  21. they look to be coming on a treat pal, will be nice to see them on the sticks atb
  22. good luck with them bunnys, hope theres some pics up end of season atb
  23. I knew it could be a duff clutch mule,it was nesting and laying soon as I hung the pan in,the young cock bird looked bewilderd its building again today so hope hes got the idea this time round
  24. well things not gone too great at mo, first nest 5 laid one on the cage bottom, the 4 in the nest clear, pair number 2 laid 5 only 3 hatched at moment,3 more pair on eggs ,just started to sit so its fingers crossed, don't mind how many hatch but I don't like it when a full nest are clear, that did knock me sick hope everybody is doing better than me at the moment atb.
