  1. Planted some spinach, spring onions, iceberg, radish, little gem and rocket in the poly you can literally watch it grow
  2. Tomatoes and cucumbers seem to be flying in the poly tunnel on the capillary matting, only watered once a week to add feed
  3. If you are on a council allotment you can have them as the rules haven't been changed since the WW2 each allotment was encouraged to have chickens and rabbits to help during and after the war with foodAs long as you are only keeping hens not cockerels and the eggs are you or direct family and not for financial gain, have a go they can only say no
  4. I've missed out really as I should of made the poly one of my first jobs to get ahead, I love sweet potatoes and I know they like heat so I'm going to try some see how I get on, it's my first year so I will be better prepared next season hopefully
  5. Got my chickens in my pen finally, took my time trying to get it fox proof as best I could as no ones ever kept chickens there before so I had to run it by the committee, a lot of the old boys voted against it because of the rats and foxes but just scrapped through so got some warrens, anyone else got any of these as they don't seem the brightest, put them in Sunday morning spent all afternoon down there, went for a few pints at 4.30 by 9.30 and a few of the lads winding me up about the foxes I went back down there and none had worked out how to get up the ladder into the coup so I spent the b
  6. Polytunnel is finally finished and I can't believe the heat in there, Ive levelled off the floor with ply and covered with poly and capillary matting like they do in garden centres to keep the plants moist and it seems to be working. I just have top up the water tank about every 3 or 4 days
  7. There is a fella on the plot who has made one out of MDPE plastic pipe and netted it, it does the job and is pretty cheap stuff to buy.,next time I'm down I will try and get a picture
  8. It does look good and is easy maintenance. How does crop rotation come into it then though, is the frame movable for where you are going to grow them next year? TC If I hadn't of fixed scaffold boards around the bottom of the frame I could move it if I wanted but it would be pretty heavy now and too much hassle
  9. The frame was originally going to be a polytunnel but it was a cheap one of fleabay so I netted it instead as I saw one in a gardening mag and thought it was a good idea as I'm trying to keep everything low maintenance, when I'm back working days I won't have half the time I have now, I know a lot of lads don't like the raised beds but there so much easier to keep on top of with the weeding. I've lost a lot of growing space with them and putting the slabs down but hopefully that will pay off when I'm older not having to struggle as much with the digging and getting about in the mud I have
  10. Topped the spuds up again, trying a few types 2 buckets of cara, 4 of dessire and 4 buckets of sarpo mira only trouble is I've used blood fish and bone and the fecking cats keep digging in there
  11. Grew some runners and French beans on and finally planted out over the weekend, put some more cabbage, colli and broccoli in my net Just glad to see a bit of green down the plot at last

  14. Yes there 90 litres tubs, my pal got them from his work so I have put black poly down in the bed and sat the tubs onI'm going to try different varieties of potatoes in the top row and if the yields are ok I will most likely stick with it as it will save me moving my crops about
  15. Terry I've just got some of them gladiator parsnips as I've been told there tasty, I've also got myself some sweet candle carrots has anyone on here grown them I've raised one of my beds by another scaffold board and topped it up with sharp sand, compost and vermiculite so I can grow some descent sized parsnips and carrots, it's the bed with the micro mesh on I have also built my pea trellis up high as I've just sown some aldermans peas, been told there heavy croppers, anyone tried these
  16. I have been told I'm too late to add horse manure as I'm about to start putting crops in, but I'm ok to add chicken manure
  17. I've been told that my plot hasn't been grown on for at least 3 to 4 years so I'm presuming that the soil is pretty good When I put my spuds in I'm going to put some blood fish and bone in, but I've been advised to put lime in my netted area before I put my brassicas in, do any of you do this
  18. Terry fair play to you, untill you get a plot you don't appreciate the hard work that involved digging over a plot I've hopefully broke the back of the plot now and can start to concentrate on growing, only problem I've got now is whoever it speak to down there for advise tells me don't listen to him you want to do it like this
  19. Not been on for a while but finally started to get things in the ground at last after all the building work, white and red onions and some shallots, never eat shallots but thought I'd give them ago, hopefully got some leeks coming and potatoes should be going in this week The sheds nearly finished after my mate managed to get me a door after promising me for weeks Managed to get myself some heras fencing so the chicken pens nearly there, been reading in the feather section and think I'm going for some hybrids as I don't want anything too skittish as mr fox is rife down there but hopefully w
  20. I have a green polytunnel cover that is 6mtrsx3mtrs if anyone wants it free of charge as I have used a net instead, collection only in Birmingham
  21. Got myself a better polytunnel as the last frame was to flimsy but I've netted it ready for my brassicas Dug over all my raised beds ready for planting and got my shed base in all I need now is 4 heras fencing panels ready for the chickens
  22. How much would one of those set you back as very interested
  23. I've been thinking about planting some fruit but as it my 1st year I want to harvest this year, if I manage to get the plot next door then I might go with the fruit as a long term option unless anyone knows of fruit I can turn around in the 1st year
