  1. now then lads. right, call me a softy or whatever but i've agreed to take in a staffy from a rescue centre, my missus loves them. i know chances are it wont have done feck all and it wont really matter if it dont ever do feck all as it just coming here, first and foremost, as a pet. but.... i just wanna know if anyone here has worked a pure (not x) staff on anything before? i know it aint gonna catch long ears, but if working alongside (or a few metres behind!!) it could be a useful partner to a lurcher running charlie?? or perhaps just a bushing dog to flush to lurcher? like i said, dont matt
  2. hey fella's. can anyone here give me some advice on the best way of going about working for hunt kennels? i'm willing to do anything, start at bottom and work up. i'm not saying i wanna be Master or anything. just wanna be able to look after hounds, feed, excercise etc and transport them on hunt day etc. i've got in touch with a good few round my area.
  3. hi guys. got given a really old hammer gun after someone died. filling in transfer form, cant find any manufacturer name on it, but loadsa numbers stamped in barrel, all over the underside of it, how do i tell which is the serial number? is it usually a 5 digit figure? this is fairly urgent, as i need to have it signed off tomorrow, so any help tonight really really appreciated, thanks.
  4. do you find your whips pick up many injuries? i was seriously thinking about getting pure but been put off by couple of people saying feet are too fragile in pure better mixing in something else.
  5. deffo, show type are scared of their own shadow.
  6. tried at bull dog and a shitsue once was called a bull shit. isn't that what you call a zoo with no animals..... a shitzu....??
  7. f*****g hell... tell ya what isn't helpful is complete and utter tit heads starting threads like this!! either you are for real but your thick as pig shit. OR your trying to catch some folks out and your still as thick as pig shit.
  8. on rabbits they are good. biggest problem i've found and been told of in pure whippet is the feet, bit of a weak point pick up lots of little injuries. and they effected by bad weather. might be worth looking for one with some terrier mixed in, tougher feet and coat. just my opinion, best of luck with whatever you go for. and happy birthday in a month!!
  9. hey staffs, excuse me for being thick but can you explain the pole thing in more detail? only Pole's i bump into round here are ones poaching and eating carp!!!
  10. no harm in trying pal, known of some fair decent runners with staff in them. usually works best second generation and put over a full greyhound bitch. let us know though.
  11. loving the irish, from proper strains they are tough and brave as they come. oyama - any pics? i've been talking about that cross with some pals of mine, be interested to hear any tales you may have.
  12. sorry, didn't quite get that, does she course and catch during day? best bet mate like someone said, id find someone in your area and go with them. gotta be someone on here willing to help. sounds like she'll get it pretty quick if already improved. just keep your patience that most important thing, far too many potential dogs are given up on too soon. best of luck.
  13. cheers for reply dave. by flocked you mean the shell type ones? i've seen demo's on using them at game fairs. are the full body ones much more effective than just the half shells? do you have to set them in any specific pattern? again from BASC wales fair i remember something about a horseshoe pattern... cheers.
  14. hello everyone. i have been involved in aspects of shooting/hunting all my life (was a gamekeeper for my sins at one time in my life)but for whatever reason have never got into or had the opportunity to pigeon. that has all changed now so just after any advice really. what are essential buys? (i've got a gun before any smart arse pops up!) best cartridges? decoy types? just any tricks of the trade really, thanks for any help.
  15. hey all. a fella i work with has been emptying out his dads old house and found a old single barrell 12bore in there. now his dad is dead, and this guy doesn't have a licence but knows i do so asked if i wanted it. thing i wanna know is, how do i stand in relation to letting local force know of my latest acquisition as the person giving it me doesn't have a number that i need to put on my licence form? does that make any sense?? any advive appreciated.
  16. just done a couple, 50 - 50 now.
  17. rik - you were seriously considering PUP of 8ths because it wasn't working as well as you'd want?? it's still a puppy, of course it needs time to learn, and grow and PLAY because it's a puppy...!!!
  18. absolutely not. i work on a farm and we use lamb rings. we use them on the lambs within first 3 days but not the first day. they do hurt at first, but the bones in the tail of the lamb are so soft at that age and once it gets over the initial pain, it's more of an inconvenience as they get used to the ring which is thicker than the actual tail. it would be barbaric in the extreme to do that to an adult dog that looks to you for his care.
  19. i find it hard to believe too. the sounds and smells of people are enough to keep any fox away, no matter how urbanised. something smells a bit fishy i think.
  20. absolutely agree, dont risk it mate, the frustration of seeing but not being able to join in in what your pup will see as a game, will frustrate it so much, be yapping, pulling on lead. just take time, be plenty of working nights.
  21. yeah plenty of them, must be gettng hungry though - had one take two chickens during day on farm where i work.
  22. i mentioned this months ago in a different post on here! i often think of what would make decent lurcher X's and i fancy doberman X too
  23. i'd have thought after all these years of breeding for perfect show looks, the poodle will have lost whatever hunting/chase instinct it might have had. im no saying they are'ne intelligent, and im sure they make ok gundogs when cross with lab as loadsa dogs will retireve, but im no convinced about using them as lurcher to chase prey. just my opinion.
  24. i voted for different towns same day, reckon it'd get more news coverage locally.
