I had something like it 2 years ago. I was sat in my hide and a rabbit popped out 20 yards away, I shot it and recovered it and placed it at the side of my hide. A few minutes later a buzzard swooped down as if to take a decoy, saw the rabbit and dropped straight on it. I was fumbling for the camera but it happened so quick, needless to say I scared the buzzard off cheeky sod, trying to pinch my rabbit. I can't believe just how many buzzards are around here now, I have them in my garden sometimes they really wind up my terriers and sure they do it on purpose.

Well done on some hard looking ground, I wouldn't fancy digging in that place reminds me of Castleton and Hope Valley when I used to go around there a few years ago.

Ouch it happens mate, we all have those days but hopefully not too often.

Sod the fac air rifle, had a few and still gone back to the .22lr and .17hmr. The .22lr with subs in is pretty much like a high powered air rifle but better all round it hits a 5p at 70- yards every time. I would just go for a ,22lr and .17hmr and you have it all covered, get the CZ's they are cheap and brilliant workhorses.

CZ .22 shorts (magazine)
stevethefish replied to stevethefish's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for the replies guys, guess I will have to give Mr ratty some Eley subs, been doing ok with them up to now but the stubbies were cheap at £2 for 50 and great for the back garden. -

Dinnertime break 11.30 with 25 in the bag, Ray gets the dirty job while I just stand behind the camera. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C--dRPtlYn4 Essential to drop the guts as soon as possible to keep the meat as fresh as possible. -
Does anyone know if CZ (or anyone else) do a magazine that takes the .22 short rounds. I bought some shorts for ratting and they just flip in the mag when you try to load them. It's a real pain but there must be a solution somewhere, any ideas guys,

This time last year we were ferreting in minus 15, can't knock this weather but it will have it's consequences, already finding does in young and had a nest of young the other day. -

Well Trev the lads take the rabbits back with them, they help to pay for the fuel and a bit of ferret grub. I have the odd ones for the ferrets, but it's all for pest control we are lucky to have a lot around here. Yes we look after the animals well, you have to keep them in tip top condition. -

I spoke to one of the keepers yesterday and he asked if I would move a few rabbits out of the spinney across the road from me. We did this last year and the year before and had excellent results from it even though it's hard going. I know just how many rabbits are in there, I can see them from my bedroom window in the edge of the field and I walk the terriers up there twice a day. We did a small hedgerow just 200 yards a way first because I saw 17 rabbits sat on the roadside the other night when I came home from lamping with the rifle. It's great having rabbits on your doorstep, especially w

A couple of hours around the fishery (Cropsafe Crew)
stevethefish replied to stevethefish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Yes I know what you mean about dry stone walls, we use to do quite a few on some of the land we have. They can be stubborn as mules and sit tight so you have to dismantle the walls sometimes. Good job we are good at re assembling them. One farm was all walls and they were undermining them so they collapsed, we were saviours to the farmer, it used to cost him a fortune to get them re built every year. -

Plenty to go at here mate, they just bounce back even when we hammer them. Sorry to hear they are thin on the ground up there, ever thought of introducing a few? -

Out again on thursday, we are a bit restricted where we can go at present until the game shooting stops. Not long now though about 3 weeks and it's open season on rabbits. -
.22lr vs .17hmr for general rabbit shooting
stevethefish replied to riflehunter583's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just get both...... .17hmr destroys the prey not much good for eating but excellent for pest control a hit anywhere.. dead, but poor in the wind. It's just the price of the ammo, .17 is not a plinking round unless you are made of money. .22lr steady gun excellent with subs, cheap, quiet and deadly accurate good for keeping the meat for eating and a good gun to use to introduce the young un's into shooting. -
Anyone got a spare CZ .17hmr mag, I must have dropped mine while out lamping and having to use the .22 Pm with price etc if you have one. Cheers

A couple of hours around the fishery (Cropsafe Crew)
stevethefish replied to stevethefish's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
It's a stanley shovel, great for clearing the soft stuff but not fantastic for digging it just feels a bit flimsy. The shovel head tapers outward a bit to much for digging straight down so we use some good old spades. The old ones are the best they are strong and made from proper steel (prob good old sheffield stuff) and get the job done in no time. We like a bit of digging, either ferreting or whatever, so good tools save the day every tool has a function. So in answer to your question they are excellent for light work and clearing the holes but not fantastic to dig with. -
Excellent pics, love the dog....

I was asked if we could move a few bunnies from around a fishery I go to, it's also a working farm and although there are loads on there it's heavy work with thick brambles etc. I lamp the place at night and the ground is crawling with mr long ears and generally get quite a few. We got there at first light or just after, the starting point was the farm yard, covered with scrap and containers etc so plenty of places for them to hide. While the lads got stuck in I went for a drive with the farmer to pick out some slightly easier spots and to and to tell him where to flail the dykes out for our
