Aha! Tha kyou my friend been trying to find this for ages couldn't even find it on the site but I'm bloody shit with anything computers etc. I shall get a copy ordered when I get paid next week. How are you and the kids getting on with the live traps?
-
So these days it's easy to get lost in the catapult world,, different frames, why cut of elastic, what taper etc etc. I've been there myself. Today I wanted to go back to what I enjoy about catties and what it's really all about, nice and simple, no power tools, just a few things about the house. I got some old leather bits I had, some fishing braid, and cut a pouch. The fork I found last week, dead fall. Cut to size, rounded off with some sandpaper and a quick run of linseed oil. Tabbed on the leather and fitted the bands. I've had many more kills with a simple fork like this than anything. D

Reset the snares the day before yesterday and had three on the same pole yesterday. Two snares pulled also with no catch. Two snares pulled today with misses also. I've had alot more on the snares than the fenn traps without a doubt. What I have noticed is now the food has dried up the squirrels are out and about alot more In search of food so I will be expecting to catch larger numbers as winter goes on. One of these squirrels was nearly as big as my little terrier I've never seen anything like it.

Also to change the pouch, do you just cut the old on or undo it where it had been spliced and slotted back through it self? This is how I've attached the bands to my old catty.
-
Looks a nice sling that mate. I do kill plenty but sometimes a head shot is hard with small ammo so fancy going back old school. Lovely catty mate. And those bands thrown the 16s isit
-
Funnily enough mate I attached some barnett red bands to a brass frame last. Are they better with big ammo are they? Do body shots drop stuff with ammo that big?
-
Haha fair enough, I think it's easy to get lost on the bandwagon of all the bands etc these days, I fancy something simple, traditional, and pleasing to the eye.

Anyone on here shoot squares? I'm enjoying making traditional style catties at thr moment and I'm going to put square on, can't see it causing accuracy issues?

What crosses are these? I have a lakey and a lakey cross Patterdale I think something with a bit of spaniel in it may be more obedient lol, although my pair listen..... Sometimes.

I've head they are in pen y fan actually, may give it a go, although isn't it getting a bit cold now or Is there still time to catch a few?

Wish we had crayfish in South wales

I've had three rabbits the one time I tried oer the season. But one rabbit is god around here no joke, so I tend to leave them however this year there seems to be alot more. A good sign I'm hoping. I am at the squirrels here though as there are too many of them. I am just going to check now and lift them again for the week so my snaring is only two days a week now. Il leave a maize pile and then next Friday when I re set I can see if it's been eaten on the area as bird activity is next to none. Where about are you from Mr tea pot?

Get out as much as I can.

I reset my snares last night in the dark ready for the weekend. I had a catch today but had to dispatch it as it was bellied. This tells me it ws too low. And is my first catch on a straight pole that isn't at an angle. It's all a learning curve though. The fenn trap hasn't gone off but the bait had remained all week so I think I may of cleared that oarticoarea. One interesting thing is every one I've caught has been a male.
-
Thanks I just re set the snares last night for the weekend as now I'm back to work its no time to do it in the week, hopefully I'll get a few but I've been setting them higher now. Do you snare yourself? Thanks for the recipe unwilling give it a go, I don't like having to many pots out I'm a one pot wonder but I will certainly try that, what effect does the milk have on the meat?
-
Cooking isn't my Strong point, plain and simple for me boys, keeps me big and strong anyway lol

Another two today, one on the snare and one in the fenn, third squirrel in four days in that oa tree. I found thr single strand brass wire is all I'm catching on with the snares, steel wire and multi strand brass isn't pulling and locking off tight enough so even though they're being pulled they're losing the catches. The single brass is pulling very tight and keeping locked on however there's a few snapped off so it's still a learning curve at the moment on the snares.

Hi guys I haven't been on this section in a while as its not been showing up on my phone for months much to my dissappointment. Well it has loaded up tonight so while it's here I'm just going to share some of what I've had the last few weeks. Thanks all. Using 12mm steels and baby beans as my ammo these days.
-
Thanks he is a good looker. So today ended a mixed bag. One In the trap, one on the catty and a bunny on the ferret, thoroughly enjoyed today.

They taste good, pretty mild to be honest so you could do your own seasoning to taste. Good lean meat though like a small rabbit. So I put a fenn in an oak three days ago and had my second catch there today. Other three fenns have been up over two weeks and no catches so going to have to move them I think. Snares still getting pulled though had three pulled but no catch so maybe they need to be up even higher again. Just takes a bit longer teaching yourself lol.
-
Yes it's open, I will try adding in some wire. I am going to move the fenns from two positions later though as they have not caught at all.
-
I moved a fenn into a big tree opening I found and had a young squirrel yesterday evening checking them the second time of the day. I also had my second snared squirrel on a log I put up about a week ago. I checked again this morning and the same snare was chewed off so either it was pulled off by a fox or he chewed off, but I'm getting there. I've made the loop alot bigger, one thing I did was on my first catch, held the squirrel to my other snares and the noose was way too small. I have my dads funeral today but hopefully I'll have a catch later this evening. Two weeks of missed catches but

Finally got one, I have made the nooses larger and tomorrow will be adding tealers to them all like in the photo, I put this caught squirrels head to my other snares and it barely fitted through so I think this has had some bearing on me not catching.
