Hiya guys. So I've got a Patterdale and a lakey. Still new to dogs so looking for advice. About two weeks ago my Patterdale ran off by a fence pacing up and down and I noticed he had seen a rabbit. He got under the fence and was away in brambles and I had to eventually tie the lakey to a tree and wade in after the Patterdale as he was long gone. So since that he has gone from not bushing or showing interest, to straight into bushes working them and no matter how thick the cover. Happy days. So this afternoon me and missus walked the dogs, put them in a woodblock and off they went working away,

Thanks Jerry and for the pm. I was a bit concerned as she looked quite bloated past two days but my missus just called and said the bitch had had a massive crap and she looks her normal proportions again. I will be alot more vigilant next time getting the rats from her. The Patterdale as no problem eating anything.

They were young rats we bolted a few out from different areas. I did wonder myself if it was a vole when we had the first one but definitely rats. I shall see about going over with a lamp the farmer did offer me the option funnily enough. Is it normal to work terriers on the lamp aswell lads on rats? Sorry if it sounds a daft one, I know next to nothing I'm a complete novice with terriers.

Lol alright Bob. It is coming along slowly when I'm not in work. My old man just got home today after having his cancer op so can't do abit more on it. For your boy isnt it?

Cheers guys. As I say I'm new to the dog side of it so they're teaching me. I've always just ferreted really but I decided best to leave what little rabbits are left around here. Just do a bit of pheasant bashing in the winter now and my new focus is the dogs. I'll just keep looking for bits of ground for the time being, I'm always out with these pair but took a while getting them going. However have had good time bonding with them and making sure they're happy pups. Not a bag of 100 rats but it may aswell be as I'm over the moon having got them at 10 weeks and now seeing them get their first

Hiya lads. As stated previously I'm new to terriers and lost my young one to being run over a few months back. I now have a Patterdale pup I saved and a lakeland I got as a small pup. Patterdale is about a year now and my lakey about 8 months. Rabbits are non existent here. Got a permission on a chicken farm before Xmas and had no luck. Went back yesterday, bolted 4 rats and caught two. Was great seeing the dogs going and my first go with the rats. I'm learning alot from them. Here is a photo but the little girl ate the first one before I could get it from her. I thought the farm would be dead

I've heard chicken bones are dangerous or is that only cooked? He had his nuts off about three weeks ago so he had a check up and he was OK, he has another check in a week's time so il Lee how he goes. I've gave him lactose free puppy milk to try and add a bit more back on him. That ks for the advice guys I'm new to dogs I've always ferrets or uses rifles over the years so I'm learning.

I've had him on this because anything else was running straight through him but might just be down to the poor condition he was in. Any suspicions what the weight loss may be? I'll give these ideas a go thank you lads. If my dogs are happy I'm happy.

He's on James wellbeloved but he has definitely lost weight and suddenly started scoffing. To be fair it was a shit home he came from, he couldn't even walk properly when I got him, a right sorry state. He's a lovely dog so hate to see him causing himself problems by being a pig. It's not like he has to compete for food here.

One is on order now. We got him from a bad home, he was In a state when we got him. He's lost a bit of weight recently so we have come up with the idea he is being given sick from the blot when we leave for work.

I'm having trouble guys. My 12 month old Patterdale has started getting snappy around food and he is gulping it down in seconds and bloating. My girlfriend had had to squeeze him a few times to burp it out or make him sick and today he ate so quick and bloated he was crying in pain. My girlfriend was brought up around terriers and she said if she did that squeeze him a bit tonight he would of died. I. Trying to figure out how to stop him gulping air, she has said a maze bowl should help him slow down. Any suggestions guys? I got three young terriers and at meal times they are fed In three sepa

So due to the lack of rabbit numbers I'm going to snare for squirrels In a heavily populated wood. I have a few questions. How effective is snaring for them when. Correctly done? Pole flat or slanted? As I have read different things. Also what height for the snare, and also, bait or no bait? I've ordered some 24 gauge brass wire to make a load up so will get some up during the week. Any tips would be appreciated.

I was saying to everyone around here about the lack of rabbits. Nobody believed me. Now they all bought airguns and ferrets thinking it was like it was when we were kids. They soon realised. Hate to say I told you so. It's very sad though I don't see them lasting much longer.

There were lots of those black bait boxes around and the owner said they have four barn cats. I was a bit gutted I won't lie but the smoker was definitely doing the job. I guess I did everything right just If they aren't there you can't get em.
-
It's an old strimmer I knocked up. Smokes really well to be fair. I did lift a load of rubbish and pallets about, and god knows what else but literally nothing.

So I managed to get permission on a chicken farm last week, and went along today with the two pups, my missus and my smoker I knocked up. This is my first proper go at ratting as I've always done ferreting and lost my young dog a few months ago so starting again. The chicken pens were riddled with holes and there were big piles of wood etc. Used my smoker and there was smoke coming out of various holes and out of holes first hidden. Didn't bolt anything all morning. The pup marked one I. The shed wall but we couldn't get it out. My girlfriends dad said he thinks either they weren't in the grou

Anyone know who I can get jabs off?

Ok I checked the snares last night, it was pulled and there was some fox fur on the end where the loop hit the stopper. I guess I've set it too low and big and he's gone through and caught his leg on it, so I know ow I'm in the right place.
-
I will also get photos of the runs and show you, would be good to get feedback. Never had a snared fox only started snaring last year, had a few rabbits in brass snares.
-
It will be dark tonight when I check but I'll get some clear photos up on the weekend. I only have two snares up at the moment so will add more up this weekend.
-
Alright lads had problems with fox at my sisters field for a while now. Over a year. Seen him on the lamp a few times he's a big old dog. I out a few snares down last year with no luck, however I could only keep them up two days a week on weekends as I worked away. I now am based close so I commute each day and put the snares up yesterday, so I can leave them up full time. I'm hoping this increases chances of a catch. The runs are all over the place and there's some real good obvious spots so I've just put them on the narrow runs so to funnel them into the snare.

I didn't get around to going up to dave for the border in the end, but I did message him and he was a man of his word gave me the details to go up, so thankyou. Also had a Patterdale offered aswell by another member I did call him but we missed each other I think, again thanks for the kind offer. I got myself another lakeland in the end, a bitch this time. I am just taking her out the same as ozzy and let her pick things up herself and teach me. Arry, sorry I haven't called yet my new unit is hectic I will definitely call you soon and if you fancy a get together over Xmas would be great to see
