  7. The topic of eating squirrel annoys me a little. No disrespect MTR nor am i trying to ruin your thread. There was a program on the telly a bit back with that chef, Marco whats his face?? He prepared and tried squirrel and nearly chucked his guts up, Strange i thought. As edible as squirrel maybe (and i have tried it ) It is as tough as old boots and has no taste whatsoever. So as for Marco mr top chef puking on squirrel it had to be all in his mind. Or his own cooking. Fry it in olive oil and garlic and or boil it in a good stock, i wouldnt waste my time or money. Just suck
  8. You will need a "recognised land based qualification" as mentioned above to qualify for any insurance related to tree felling operations. The fishery/shoot will get fuc**d by the H & S if they come to know you are opperating a saw without the above I would strongly suggest doing a course and obtaining insurance. I have seen even the simplest of jobs go tits up and witnessed some bad accidents to experienced collegues. Subbying to a local firm would be a start and best of luck.
  9. Google NPTC, Chainsaw related operations.......cs30 & cs 31. Chainsaw maintenance, cross cutting and felling small trees (up to 18" dia) You will need to get these done before you can go any further, ie climbing, dismantling, large trees etc Courses will be easy to find and run often. However, it will set you back in excess of five hundred nicker, unless you can get funding/grant.
  10. No the armed forces took him on as a professional He should be able to catch them with his bear hands
  11. Are you reading the right posts and are you following the information given correctly?? The posts made by a good few members ie woodga & snareman to name a few are spot on, follow their advice and you cant go wrong. You will also find topics pinned at the top of this section. There is a wealth of usefull information available if you look. If you cant find what you want use the search button. If you have read the relevant topics and posts and followed them well by instruction, but still not having any luck. You need to try again harder or give up. Hunting and trapping is not

  18. You can never have enough nets. It all depends on the amount of holes on the warrens you are ferreting. If there is 10 holes, you will need 10 nets and a few for spares. and so on. As far as gate nets and long nets go, its handy to have them, it all depends on the enviroment and terrain you are working. Budget is also a big factor. Start with purse nets, get some ferreting done and find your feet, then think about putting your hand in your pocket.

My thoughts exactly Couldnt have been much fun, dragging that around all day. The rest of the rabbits body looked to be in good order, it was a good size and weight and had a good thick coat. Poor bugger

On my rounds today and happened upon a rabbit, sat out in plain sight, around 50 yds away and with no cover.Showing me all of its left side. An opportunity not to pass up i thought. Raised my rifle and slowly made up 10 yds, didnt budge an inch. Did another 5, still not looking as it was going to make a bid for freedom. It just scrunched up and sat down further into its seat, perhaps thinking i hadnt noticed it and feeling comfortable blending into the bare brown mud it was sat on. Decided i wasnt going to approach any further, i took my shot. With a kick and a twitch it rolled over o
  22. Rarely get it in the same area every year, More like every other. Some spots we go can be even longer. Dont get me wrong, you will stumble upon the odd mixy rabbit, but it takes a while for it to fully take hold and make some kind of an impact. Im very fortunate to have plenty of land in different areas to go at, so if one place goes tits up, there is always somewhere else to go, we leave that spot alone for a while and allow the numbers to recover, but still making a presence occasionaly for the land owner There is one farm we go and you can guarante if it hasnt got it this year it will h
