  1. fancied making something this evening for a bit of fun and i decided on making a new strop,wood backed with an antler handle. so heres the raw materials,a nice bit of English yew and a red deer horn from an Exmoor stag that met with an untimely end ....but thats another story! and heres the job done: now a strop as this deserves better than jewellers rouge or toothpaste for a compound so i managed to aquired some 60micron diamond cutting paste: apply just a little: and this stuff cuts well! razors edge in just a few strops of the knife. thanks for lo

I find it quite therapeutic to whittle a bit of wood now and again in front of the wood-burner,heres a few bits i did recently: left is an ash ladle from a local downed branch,next is beech from the stourhead estate and finally an unfinished ash serving spoon on the right. a holder for my pipe. and a head for a new walking stick: thanks for looking.
  3. i use decreasing grades of emery cloth,in grits 60 , 100 , 120 , 240 then 0000grade wire wool.

Over the Christmas period i managed to lose my stick whilst out and about one evening....but thats another story! so there i am with out a stick and given that i was waiting in all day for a postal delivery that didnt arrive i thought ide make my new stick. lurking by the fire side was a nice hazel stick i cut back in October from a local hedgerow,not overly straight,but then i dont like ultra straight stix ,for the collar i used a piece of scrap dimondwood from a catty i made and the stick top was an Exmoor deer crown from a 8 point stag i bagged a couple of years back.   14. great things the kelly kettle,search under storm kettle theres a few makes out there,all good quality but some cheaper. i go for the big one and take a flask to put the excess hot water in.

  16. opinel knives are a very good tool,the carbon blades are of a very good steel and keep an edge,as stated a wipe over with an oily rag is sufficient to keep it from rusting,the discolouration id perfectly normal,opinel do make a stainless steel version of many of their patterns,they too are very good but not as good as the carbon versions, the best opinel i own is the 'opinel jardin' with its drop point its a winner.

  18. once apon a time not so long ago just After lunch me and 2 of my boys took the dogs out for a walk,i fancied a bit of game in the larder and i knew just the place to go.So we wrapped up warm and set off,within 10 minutes we were on the old London road which is now little more than a lane,it was once the county boundary between Somerset and Wiltshire. After a bit of mooching along the lane mentally noting the catty forks we spotted aswell as a few nice straight sticks for stick making Jack my 8 year old spotted deer tracks leading into the field on our left, we deviated off the ice sheet
