Pasted from another forum There is a new threat to our much loved partridge and others, obviously there is a new treatment for seed grain on the market from Bayer Crop Science called "Rubin" which can be highly toxical for partridge and pheasant! on a shoot virtually all partridge disappeared within a week of sowing this years winter wheat, he is a vet and asked the farmers what they changed from last year and they told him about this new treatment and he looked over the chemicals and one is highly toxical to all birds with a muscle stomach (all galliformes). This may seem a silly question to some but would a bird of prey start to self-hunt if shown alot or to much game? I fly mostly from a "follow on" position not often from the fist so say my FHH had a flight at a pheasant, missed it then sat in a tree 100 yards away, as I walk closer a rabbit pops up 50 yards infront of her and she takes flight and missed that and she ends up 100-150 yards away then say a hare gets up as she is about to land on top of a hedge and she desides to have ago chases and kills it. I think the best thing to do is to get it going ASAP as you will only be holding her back even if you are flying her for a month or two then start again after the moult.

I couldn't agree more with the frosts ect, but then again there are alot of falconers that teather all year even through the moult all depents on shelter I suppose.

Im not trying to have a argument but everyone I know who picks up a P/R Accipiter picks them up early, males about 9 weeks and females about 10- 10 1/2 weeks so I cant see much difference what bird it is but then again we could be getting on to another subject C/R vs P/R

I have heard of people getting late birds. I know of a few who picked there's up at 12 weeks and have been no problem. I picked my female up at 22 weeks, swings from aroundabouts.

I'm not sure what I would of do if that was me wether to phone for an ambulance for the chap or let him crawl to his back door and let him phone for one Im glad she's ok anyway.

one of the reason's I done this is because she looked like she wanted to self-hunt as I have plenty of game about it was something I didn't want to happen.

I had the same trouble about a week or two ago with a female I put it down to the weather. After messing around with her weight and coming well at 2lb 2oz she slowly lost interest so decided to drop her a tad, she was about a week ago 1. 1/2oz under her hunting weight still the same so desided to feed her up and go back to basic's she now coming like a train at 2lb 3oz dont be fooled by this just because they seem over-weight they will also do the same under-weight.

I did get some X-ray paper from my young lady vet but she didn't have much at that time

Can anyone tell me what the material used is for a tail gaurd the black plastic with the small diamond shapes on it my minds gone blank got some ages ago but cant remember what its called.
