Any Gloucestershire Stalkers willing to help a novice
snapper5 replied to stevev6's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Hi Steve - Take a visit to Cricklade, south of Cirencester. Talk to Wilf in Country Pursuits which you'll find in the High Street. He runs an independent deer management course, which is where I did mine. He has decades of experience and knows everything there is to know about deer stalking. Where in Glos are you? Cheers S -
I thought all the programmes did us a bit of a favour. Pretty well balanced for the most part. S

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2009 brings everything you are looking for. S

Apparently it's a bloke thing, regardless of species! (You can guess a woman sent it to me). * * * * *

I've always pondered this one as hares are also game but how many people have hares or game listed on their fac? S

Tikka's screw cut in right-handed actions only for some strange reason. S

Hi All - Talking to someone today whose friend claims to sell foxes he shoots to a local Chinese family for their consumption. Apparently he gets £40 for each carcass as they are considered a real delicacy in China. I have no reason the truth of this but do find it a bit hard to swallow (pardon the pun). Anyone else heard of this?? S

Not being an expert in any of this, the one thing that crosses my mind is what effect the different calibres and speed of the bullets have on the animal. I use a 6.5 x 55 and I have found the exit hole on Roe is always a very neat one inch diameter hole. I have seen a photo of the exit hole caused by a .243 and it was large and messy in comparison - not saying they're all like that, just the one I've seen. Surely this should be taken into account too? S

Scope mounte lightforce striker

I had the same problem. Two very small strips of insulating tape on the bottom of the lamp filter sorted it and didn't upset the balance of the rifle. I noticed it the first time I went out at night so I just thought I'd take the mod off for the evening. It was the first time I had ever fired it (or any rifle actually) without a mod on - nearly cr*pped myself. Put it back on having frightened all the wildlife in the county away and went home to find the tape! -
I'm a keen gardener so produce enough veg from the garden to go with the game I shoot. Really good year this year for most things - just about to start on the sprouts, parsnips, leeks and still digging carrots. Purple sprouting a good size which will kick off in early spring. Picked all the remaining peppers from the greenhouse at the weekend, so the greenhouse is now empty and waiting for the onion seeds to go in on heated benches just after Christmas. Than it all starts over. We also have a large Bramley apple tree and three plum trees that I would quite like to see have a bad year in 2

Take a look at this: Butt Out tool in use. I use it on deer once I get it back home rather than in the field. It does make the job a little easier. Still not a particularly pleasant task! S

Couldn't it be an early prototype of a deer butt remover?

I tried the Wam call but found I ended up out of breath when I had to take the shot. And then I sat on it. Now I use the Callmaster as do others on here but it would be interesting to discover which particular call/chip other users find most successful? Cheers S

Hi Deker - I bought a cheap snap air rifle when I was 16 which I used for plinking but I recall I never really got the hang of it. I remember a pigeon was caught and brought in by one of the cats but it wasn't quite dead so I volunteered to 'put it out of its misery' but even though I shot it in the head at point blank range, such was the lack of power the pellet just bounced off! Sold it shortly afterwards. After a break of about 25 years, I bought a Webley Raider to get rid of the rabbits eating my veg. Had good fun with that for a year or so but needed more range as by that time I

Great to see an expert at work. He did it a million times faster than the one I did this afternoon! Very useful - thanks!

Zeroing with scope with no parallax adjustment
snapper5 replied to snapper5's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks guys...hopefully picking new rifle up today and zeroing it later. BTW, went for the T3 Lite Stainless as the distributors had one in stock in 6.5 x 55 in left handed. The distributors for the Titan 6, who didn't have one in stock, said they would check with the manufacturers and see how long to get one - they never bothered to come back to me. Great way to run a business. S -
I get £1.00 each paunched from the local butchers. They then suggested they would give me a *generous* £1.50 each but they wanted them frozen in batches of 50 prepared ready for display. I politely declined - sorry, let me rephrase that: I told them to stuff it. Saying all that, there seems to be a complete lack of rabbits on all the land I shoot on at the moment. Anyone else finding the same? S

Great read and good luck for the FAC. Well done! S

I take mine off when I get back, squirt some Napier cleaner in the end and stand it in a little plastic box to catch any drips. Has stopped it rusting (so far!) S

2 questions about 6.5 x 55 calibre
snapper5 replied to Mil Dot's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hi Mil Dot - You've asked these questions at a great time - thanks!. My 6.5 x 55 Tikka T3 Lite is currently being threaded for my T8 as for some weird reason the factory don't/can't thread left handed ones!?! Even GMK (the distributors) can't explain why. Due to be proofed next Tuesday so I should hopefully have it by the end of next week. I look forward to reading the answers to your questions... S -
Hi Martin - Thanks for the tip. Found a drinks cooler on ebay and rang the seller for a little clarification. Turns out he has a refrigeration business up the road in Gloucester and has just taken a couple of Foster fridges out of a commercial kitchen. Offered to put a bar in it for me to hang deer from and deliver it too - running in my garage as of this morning. Very happy to recommend the guy if anyone else is looking for a similar solution - Yan at http://www.polarcoldrooms.co.uk/. Also spotted a stainless steel table whilst I was there - perfect for a little venison butchery. As

How did you get on with your course Local? Managed to pass mine and got to shoot my first Roebuck in the process which I had to sort out under supervision - most of which is now in our freezer. Thanks for your help. S

Personally I wouldn't go for a domain name with 'Deker' in it as for the majority of people searching for something you might sell, 'Deker' is pretty irrelevant. Nastkl71 is right with his advice to try and get the keywords in the domain name. I guess huntershop sums it up but you could also register archershop, fishermanshop and shootershop and point them at the same main domain. Ideally these should all be different websites rather than just redirecting to the one as again you will get better results on Google. I guess you're going for the UK market so I'd have .co.uk rather than .com

Just getting into stalking (shot my first one, a roe buck, early this morning on my course!) and am working through the practicalities of bringing home a shot deer. I have most of it worked out but am interested in finding out what everyone else uses to refrigerate deer carcasses in? Am I really looking at having to spend nearly a grand on a game larder? Also does everyone use a deer trestle or have you found other ingenious ways of supporting the carcass whilst you work on it? Thanks in advance for your input. S
