  1. Definately not otter-these are fox prints.
  2. i was out shooting lastnite and i got my shogun stuck in a rabbit hole ....the only prob is that i aint got a winch so i had the dig the holes out with a saw <yes a saw>as well as sacrificeing my work boots under the wheels for extra grip......nightmare Thats "Day 1" stuff mate, Don't go anywhere vaguely off road without a spade and rope, i learnt that the hard way wont do it again....who said them rabbits dont get there own back Also dont park on the grass with a shogun! :11:
  3. Im no computer wizard mate but sounds like a case of updating your anti-virus.sooner rather than later.
  4. Does that mean that from now on today is a BANK holiday?
  5. Perhaps we can make today a BANK holiday
  6. Some time ago we got hold of some military flares, red smoke flares to be precise.Used them on rat buries in in a ditch .The smoke travelled well through the tunnels but what amused me was the red assed rats that bolted.
  7. I thought I was pretty much on top of the foxes on one of the places I go but one night I went there with a mate on his quad.He has a rifle rack mounted on the rack so I was able to take the .222 and the 12bore which I carried. We always open the gates on the way through the farm as its poultry and obviously all shut in at night. The gates are opened so that we can chase foxes on the quad without having to stop for gates. The remaining fox population is so wary on this farm ,that shooting with 12bore off the back of the quad is the best method at night. Didnt see anything until we got to the ma
  8. Sometimes pays to take the youngster back to basics-ie-rats.This sometimes rekindles or starts the prey drive in an otherwise confused terrier.Sadly though as you said ,not all terriers make the grade.
  9. Quality read lads .Learn something new every time I log on.
  10. Learn to use your hand pushed against your mouth. The tone and volume can be varied ,unlike most of the bought calls. This will amuse some of the more experienced lads-Ive recorded the squealing of a rabbit on my phone which was caught by the lurcher and Ive started using to call foxes with some success.Beats paying 60 to 100 quid for the fox calling plyers and tapes!
  11. some time's [bANNED TEXT] me think's they are all towny fox's the rscpa has dumped in the loverly countryside  I thought I was pretty much on top of the foxes on one of the places I go but one night I went there with a mate on his quad.He has a rifle rack mounted on the rack so I was able to take the .222 and the 12bore which I carried. We always open the gates on the way through the farm as its poultry and obviously all shut in at night. 12. For the moment keep the lamp on ,when you and the dog get a bit more experianced you will be able to tell which foxes are acting a bit suspicious and need the lamp off just to reassure them. Its the suspicious foxes that need watching! .If at all interested they may run in while the lamp is off and you have missed the chance of a run. They will not linger nearby while the lamper swings the lamp round looking for them .All you will see is the back of charlie running away or worst still and the most frustrating for the lurchermen ,the fox may of reteated to a safe distance and just sit ther
  13. Its hard to say where you are going wrong without knowing whether the foxes are already lamp/squeak shy.Personally ,I shine the beam at their feet out at a distance and use the work light on the clulite as they get closer, say 60yds.you dont need much light to see fox eyes at this range. When first spotted I do my best to get downwind of them even if it means a tiptoe of 50yds.Like someone said before I make the first few calls loud to get the foxes attention and then quiet down as charlie aproaches.Ive found if you squeal loudly at a close fox he will be off regardless of whether he was committ
  14. I dont think anybody answered the question asked"what is break in procedure". Im not that well up on the technical side of rifle shooting but I do know that unless the rifle is fitted with a heavy duty varmint barrel ,you cannot put round after round through it straight off. Each round fired causes the barrel to heat up and distortion on a small scale is the result, causing a drastick loss of accuracy.A period of cool off is required between each shot and I take this to be the break in procedure.
  15. Mate-these batteries you have are 12v - coupling them together makes 24v-this will blow your bulb unless you upgrade it.charge them both up and take them both to be used seperately.
  16. Nigel- That other forum is at the furthest end of the scale to us as Im sure you agree. One of the twats speaks of badgers being in decline.Obviously not a night walker! These people who say that man has no need to control any species dont seem to realise that either directly or indirectly we manage every living thing .My granddad tells me of a time when tb was almost unheard of and its no coinsidence that this was a time when the badger was not protected. The spread of tb seems to be in direct relationship to the increase of badgers.Commen sense says lets have widespread cull, not extermination,a
  17. Dickyboy-This sad, sorry law we now have states that up to 2 dogs can be used to flush a fox for waiting guns or a bird of prey?.A lurcher on its own or doubled up can no longer legally kill a fox ,but can be used to follow up and dispatch a wounded fox.Im not advising you to break this law mate but if you read what Ive wrote you will see a way around this crap.Good hunting.
  18. I appreciate it mate even if no-one else does?
  19. Around us the firearm officer asks people what calibre rifle the applicant wants before the certificate is granted. Within reason any calibre was O,k so long as you had a valid reason to own one.You only nead to pay £26 if you add further calibres after the certificate is granted. This includes the addition of silencers.Think about your calibre choice before applying. There is no minimum acreage of land for any calibre,it just has to be safe for that calibre. If you are granted a ticket through joining a club then legally you have to find out if any land you shoot on is passed for your calibre
  20. Excellent action shot.Hope theres many more digs to come.
  21. Having read the link Im not sure why anyone wishes to preserve a strain of lurcher which never became popular either as the 1st cross or line bred.[other than a collector I suppose]. Nothing about this breeding suggests anything superior to whats commenly available today. This tumbler cross sight hound will be forgotten along with heeler crosses and Handcock lurchers which are overrated in my book. They are all fashion lurchers and thier time has gone.If they were any good then wed all have one ?. Stick with what you know and dont waste time on chasing the ULTIMATE lurcher.
  22. J.D-Forget the ultimate dog of any breed. The nearest you will get is a lurcher that is mediocre at some forms of hunting but excells at another.Lurchers have been bred worldwide for thousands of years and the ultimimate hunter would be around by now.The best thing any of us can do is start with a pup from the right breeding ,from a bitch that fits our idea of what we want to work, and introduce that pup bit by bit to each quarry. Some lurchers develop a knack for feather whereas some never take to it.Some relish the challenge of bigger or biteback quarry. Some will never get past the rabbit stage
  23. Quality footage mate, cracking dogs and great landscape.
  24. I would be more inclined to think they were getting access to the loft via the cavity. We had this problem in early winter.Check all around the base of the houses especially where drains run under lintels into the house. The rats were indeed feeding off bird tables and travelled a fair way to "play in the house at night,5.30 am actually".Found the small warren under a shed and ferretted it .
