  1. What I base my total denial of these cats on is this-There are over a 100 reconised packs of fox hounds in England ,Scotland and Wales, collectively ,not including beagles or staghounds.Whilst I am the first to admit and acknowledge that these hounds are not trained on a cat scent,I refuse to believe that if these cat exist that a pack of hounds would not drive one from cover or tree one .If they had believe me we would all know about it!Also why is it when a big cat is sighted ,no-one is at hand to shoot it and no-one can find pug marks anywhere in the area belonging to a big cat .DREAMERS, AL
  2. Ryseway-Check the silencer end mate {if fitted} ,is it an oval shape as opposed to a true circle. If so the silencer is knackered and should be replaced. This oval end definately throws the shot out .The mags on the 10-22 should be washed out in soapy water ,dried and lightly oiled .Do not keep them in your pocket as they collect dust faster than anything and this is what causes jamming.Personnally I set the sights for 70 yds as most of the rabbits we lamp are at or around this distance .With practice its possible to judge shots out to 100 and as close as a few yds.Set at 70 ,a rabbit at 5 yds r
  3. Hogs can bolt away quickly. Some folks take lurchers along just for that reason. But they will easily slip away into their next den given the chance. We've had a hog get out of the snare and let the russell go to catch it, which worked too. They're not as fast as a rabbit, Quality mate .You are a lucky chap.
  4. I use a .222 very regular and clean it every 10 shots. The last batch of bullets bought were my usual Federal 50grain but the zero at 100yds has moved up 30mm.This change is consistant with 15 shots fired .The scope has not been knocked to my knowledge. Is there that much fluctuation in factory loads. p.s I buy 300 at a time so maybe somethings changed at the factory .Anybody else had this with Federal.
  5. What sometimes happens when teaching a terrier to retrieve shot stuff is what we call red eye .If the quarry to be retrieved is still alive and flaps ,bites or scratches then the eyes glase over and the kill mode sets in followed by rag and sometimes eat .I used to require my terriers to retrieve but now I let them kill. My lurchers however ,must retrieve .I always laugh at people who moan about having to walk out to a lurcher that hasnt been taught retrieve .
  6. Ownly joking Mark .Didnt take long to get a bite either . mark -are you a bricklayer? Rained off myself today .
  7. IT IS A HORSE The best way to break a dog to live stock is with an older dog that is already steady when the young dog sees the older one is calm & is not taking an interest it makes training alot easier . there is a differance between brakeing a dog to sheep than breaking it to cattle & horses ...to break a dog to sheep you have to stop the dog giving chase ...cause sheep will always run away from you & a young dogs instict is very strong to chase something that is running away from it ...to break a dog to cattle & horses which will not run away but by there inquisitiv
  8. If no-one comes up with a better answer mate then this is what I WOULD DO.Wait till the dog is in full howling mode and creep up to the kennel {if poss}with a half bucket of water .Throw the water in the dogs face pretty hard .Repeat if necessary .Harsh but has always worked on howlers for me .
  9. Ownly joking Mark .Didnt take long to get a bite either .
  10. Anybody on here from the Swindon area who is breeding ferrets this year .Im desperate for some new blood.
  11. Yes they do.Work on the dogs stamina by increasing periods of exercise .They are not as stupid as made out to be either .
  12. Nice pics mate .Keep them coming. Are hogs fast above ground and are they suitable for a lurcher.
  13. Woolbr8stl-Do all your terrier quarry dig fresh holes or are they usually found in groundhog buries and do raccoons ever lock on to the terrier . foxdropper.
  14. Ian ,a yes or no would be nice.
  15. Has anybody else seen groups of herons standing in fields in large numbers .Must be a seasonal thing as Ive seen it before ,this time of year. They were hunched up ,all facing the middle of the group .23 in all.
  16. Roe deer are usually found in small groups .However ,we have an area around us which is deemed a sanctuary and regularly holds between 30-50 roe of all ages and sexes which come together to form a herd .They can be veiwed from the roadside .I queried the roe herd thing until I saw this for myself. In the rutting season bucks will not toleratea bucks of breeding age around them.
  17. Ian- Dont let your local council hear that [joins the main drains] I got into a lot of bother when the neighbour reported a blockage and called out dino-rod. They followed the manholes back to my garden and although the blockage was further up the street they reported me to the council .Luckily I knew the official and promised to change it.
  18. Some bitches are meticulously clean and are hard to catch in season.Apart from the vulva swelling ,your daily checks should include running your hand down her back to see if her tail flicks to the side when you reach her hips .Bitches will have a bloody discharge for 3-4 days which turns a clear, mucus like as the season progresses. From the 10-13 day of heat the bitch will stand, hopefully.
  19. Very good post mate........ ......... A great asset to any kennel if used properly.... very true . however the very nature of the harder breeds is what makes tham attractive to the not so sensible and the less mature terrier owners. (not a dig at the responsable lads just an observation) LIKE PLUMMER SAID"THE TATOO AND EARING BRIGADE".Have to go now and wax my legs. :11:
  20. Dont see anyone being macho just sticking up for their way of life !.One of them is worth a 1000 woodys. KEEP DIGGING.
  21. Going to go easy on this thread? The amount of protein fed also concerns the age of the dog.IMO a dog is at its peak at around 4-6years of age and this is when the protein should be highest ,in accordance with the working season. There is some medical evidence to suggest that dogs past thier prime have difficulty in digesting high protein contents. The excess protein passes straight through the dog. Some kidney damage is also possible through too high a protein.I lessen the content as the dog gets older. Country Wide stores do a good range of protein contents for £10 a bag. Mate- Dont keep
