i did a bit of beating with a game keeper a few seasons back and he had a springer and a related springer x whippet x springer, the original springer was the ligter smaller type not the huge kc stuff and was a maniac! the other was a relative but calmer and pretty quick! it coursed bunnies as we were beating a field and got every one.he said it was as hardy as the springer with almost as much stamina (it looked a bit more tired after a 8hr day) his son had tried it ferreting and worked well. it depends how big the springer is i should think but a whippet/grey should be able to take it? sc

Update on my lab bull greyhounds
kent scotty replied to labsnlurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i have mates that have racey pure breed working labs, they do "look" quick but they have no chance at all on rabbits(maybe its the difference in land down here?)and after they begin to mature at 3 ish they lose the waist and begin to look like a normal lab even with a lot (and i mean a lot)of exercise. they are just too heavy to run anything unless you have alot more space to run(possible as its abit more open up there) where you are then maybe you will get the bigger stuff. they have all had a go with fox(pre ban)round the pens and in the garden but only one ever did the job and he's a -
dont you think that theres enough shit dods in rescue homes at the moment, never mind dangerous ones. is ok to say lets breed this lets breed that all the time but a proper dog man has a responsibilty to the care and welfare of these dogs. we live in a throw away culture and dogs are treated like peices of shit now adays anyway just breeding and adding to the unwanted dog population would be somewhat irresponsible. Too right mate, the handfull of the most common crosses are all that is needed for a decent dog man the do all he needs to in the field. some have to try new breeds

why do people find it so hard to get permision
kent scotty replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
most of the land round here isnt owned by farmers but land owners who own a lot of the farms.my family are farm workers and tennats so i kinda know the big owners and i cant get permission as they have sold(for big money)the pigeon shooting to buy a day syndicates! if you try the smaller farms all you get is sorry had to much trouble with pikeys with dogs or had problems with sheep worrying and dont want to risk it etc!! i am looking into ferreting as its the only way i can think of that may get me in the door so i can ask for other stuff latter after a year or so! its different all ov -

NOT TRUE really!! what is the truth then? the only bonus i can see with crossing a wolfy would be to produce a healthy wolfy looking dog!! one that would live longer with out having to be on pain killers. so then where did they come from? the big giant dude in Ireland? scotty Not true , One of the oldest breeds there is. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: well thats that sorted then!! shows a lot about you my friend. older than salukis and greys? scotty Never said older than salukis and greys My Frien

its all to do with genetics!! they dont just divide up equally! some of a litter will through to on or the other of multiple crosses! its just if they turn out good they turn out good! scotty

how embarrasing!!!!!!!!
kent scotty replied to Paul in North Lincs's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i have seen this happen myself.i old bloke came out with a mate of mine(who happens to have "the fastest dog in the world" you know the type) just so he could have a look how it was done(the mate had been a bit loud in the pub the last few weeks) by his side was a leggy lab with slighty broken coat but in no way running dog looking. well he watched a few runs then as the mate was checking the dogs feet he said he would "try the mutt" just for a laugh!!! i had the feeling from the look in his eye somthing was up and sure enough the dog was amazing!! fast as fu#k and was always in the right -
:clapper: i only feel young i'm not really!! i think you.ve been reading to many fairy stories.if they are what brought down wolfs then either the wolves were very slow(maybe they were fat from eating all the stupid english?) or really sleepy! because they really cant run for very far.it would be a good dog for the shows but will never be any good for anything in the uk. the dogs in aus and the us are very different from the recreated breed we have here. scotty

surely a wolf hound crossed with a grey would just end up much like a deer hound? the recreated wolf hound is just a shaggy large dog nothing like the ones that used to do the job.i think they are deerhound mastiff x's with a bit of great dane for size(and unhealthyness) scotty

we have breed dogs for thousands of years so they become more intelligent and more person friendly! the wolf is neither in the way we are used to.they would be crap for any where with out thousands of acres.its ok 2just giving them a go but you would be stuck with maybe 8 dogs to bring up and if they were crap what would you do with them? scotty
-
do you tend to find most other lurcher crosses lacking in somthing the wolf would bring?? its not half term is it? scotty
-
good pics and nice height over the fence!! i wouldnt of seen you walking the dog past the m2 services would i?? scotty
-
Not trying to upset anyone but the word lurcher came from romany language fact so define 100zz of years of breeding fact?? i though it was impossible to really know where the name came from?could be to lurch or steal or many others? so what dose it mean then?(genuine question not f*****g wit ya) scotty
