So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?
Aled replied to JohnGalway's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Nice one guys. I've got some tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, peppers, and lettuce on the window sill. Have planted some potatoes in pots. Will be planting the veg patch with French Beans, Potatoes, Onion Sets, radish, beetroot and carrots this Saturday. Held it off for a week due to this weeks colder weather. Plastic growing frame going up soon. Cheers. Aled -
Well you'll be pleased to know we are not related, my Nan's sister ran said cafe and settled in Gosport, we used to visit her for summer holidays, there was a brilliant outdoor pool in Gosport, which along with the sea fishing available led to some enjoyable family holidays.

Hey Neal this is a serious question you mentioned you were 1/16th Welsh and from Gosport, your Welsh ancestors didn't happen to run a servicemen's cafe during the war? Cheers Aled

My rough shooting, and wildfowling companion plus family pet Celt, he's a proper mongrel a NZ Huntaway x Labrador.

Added some wood ash, and did the First dig over last Sunday, also potted some tomato and cucumber seeds. -
Some great pictures and stories all.
-
Sadly no, very few rabbits in my part of West Wales sadly. Glad other areas are seeing increases, gives me hope! Cheers Aled

Woodcock are the rough shooters bird, plan to see if i can bag a few this weekend, they have arrived in my patch of West Wales. Some nice pictures on this thread.

Some cracking and very tasting looking dishes on here.

Watched it, he caught some lovely trout out of that loch! Cracking scenery, however what a quandary within him does he stay on in the woods or leave for the town? I knew bachelors and widowers in my corner of West Wales, who lived quiet isolated lives on small farms, the last of the old smallholders, I'm sorry to say most faded and passed away very rapidly after leaving their homes and headed to council flats in the towns. However one or two did thrive! Take what you want from my comments.

I know it was an accident but why didn't he leave the line go slack to see if the hook would fall out......when you do it accidently while salmon fishing the hook always falls out!! I was fishing a bunch of worms for salmon one morning and a otter followed the bunch right to my feet and gave me a good chattering to before disappearing back into the deep! Cheers Aled

Article in last weeks shooting times about mongrels as workers. Quite interesting. Cheers Aled

My working dog is a proper mongrel an accidental mating between a Labrador and a NZ Huntaway, cost me £200, he wont win a field trial championship but he's a good rough shooting companion and we go wildfowling.

Just wish there were a few rabbits here to harvest, i've got a slow cooker and i have only been able to cook rabbit in it once. Looks lovely.
-
Let me get this right, you just caught 103 rabbits in one session.....that's more rabbits than i have seen in the last 8 years! I get excited if i see 3 in the same field these days. Well done.

Battersea Dogs home, Cocker Spaniel Rescue, and Black Retriever Cross do rehome to gundog working homes, i think some others do as well but not sure which, RSPCA & Blue cross do not rehome to gundog working homes. As an aside there is a 2 year old cocker spaniel cross looking for a home on the Black Retriever Cross facebook page, a working home is suggested for it. Cheers Aled

I strung last years Onions up, and they lasted 9 months. So i can vouch that it works.

Trout & Salmon & The Field magazine at our local newsagents, it also doubles as our Post Office. I'd be disappointed if it closed, so i make a pointing of buying them there to support them.
-
Self caught or bought fish green lurchers? Look lovely either way. Cheers Aled

Totally agree white van man, he's also a lovely people dog, he loves all the neighbours and they all know and like him, which is nice.
-
I've really enjoyed the stamp of some of the dogs on here, some lovely crosses, this is my mad mongrel Celt he's not strictly a bushing dog in the traditional sense, but he's a good rough shooting companion. This year was meant to be his first wildfowling season, sadly Covid has limited this. He's a Labrador crossed with a New Zealand Huntaway.

First of my home grown spuds, eaten with butter and salt!

I've got some crops doing well, potatoes, beetroot, and carrots looking promising. Peppers seem slow, no flowers yet. Cheers Aled -
