  1. Had a walk along by the old stone wall today hoping to catch a glimpse of a snake or too..........i wasn't disappointed........found this magnificent specimen warming itself in the sun
  2. You may find the following of interest................! Joint BPCA and NPTA Statement on ‘Burrow-Collapsing’ Devices There are devices now available for causing explosions in underground burrow systems. These are marketed in some countries as a method of pest control for moles, rats, rabbits and other burrowing species. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) and the National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) wish to point out that the use of any explosive (other than ammunition) for the purpose of killing or taking any wild animal is prohibited under section 1
  3. No exactly right............i am indeed lucky to see such a thing and the quality of the picture is of secondary importance..!
  4. The first post picture i was able to get within a couple of feet as it was sleeping and the wind was in the right direction.......so could get a lot clearer picture. The second pair of pictures i was about 15 feet away...........as it was looking straight at me i didn't want to venture any nearer in case it ran off. Thats where a really good camera and tele-photo lens would have made all the difference..........instead of my digital camera on digital zoom.
  5. Still there today so got these rather long shots of it facing me..........digital zoom...........so not really clear pics.
  6. I was about early this morning checking some squirrel cages in a secluded copse when I spied this little fella curled up fast asleep. I believe it is a muntjac fawn as apart from the odd roe it is the only type of deer i have seen around here. I keep saying it, but oh how i wish i had a quality camera at times like this.........still.........not too bad a shot with the little old digital.
  7. Have a Great Day........Happy Birthday Sue...!
  8. Yes i agree Ian............as i said in my original post it can easily be utilised for an Imbra or Mk 6 Fenn as well and if there wasn't dogs about i would have used either of them two options. I just feel a bit safer knowing NO dog is going to get his nose down the tube. A labrador smelling bait at the far end ot the set would bulldose his way through to get at it.........dont want a bodygrip, Imbra, or Fenn hanging off a nose ta very much
  9. Took about 15mins Max from start to finish......... Bodygrips are fine in certain situations but i would be afraid the keepers dog would stick his snout in one at this location. By using the tube trap, the bit that bites is out of harms way
  10. Just thought i would show a cheap and cheerful quick mink set-up using the wcs tube trap (which are anything but cheap and cheerful) The pictures tell the story really the things to look out for though are to leave a bait chamber at the back which is accessed from the small cover at the rear (this saves taking all the covering off to get at it) and make sure you cut a notch in the side of the trench to allow the set trap to fire sweetly. Obviously you would make a much sturdier construction for a permanent set up but as a temporary set-up it works well. It can only be used where there are no
  11. Had this lot over the last two weeks from an area of self-set ash and hazel. Thumbsticks, shanks, long-net pegs etc. Anything that doen't make the grade as a good stick is used for snare or trap holding pegs, nothing gets wasted.
  12. why build its confidence when u can catch it first time I entirely agree..........if you can do enough to entice it into the trap you want to be catching it first time. I never have seen the point of pre-baiting an unset trap...........you are just missing the chance to catch it.
  13. Once found a 1935 penny excavated by mister mole.......sitting on a mole hill.... and also a round piece of circular flint that had obviously been worked.........but appart from the odd bit of broken clay pipe nothing else of any importance. Metal detecting is another thing though...... and i have found many artifacts and coins using the old detector.
  14. Had the good fortune to find a good supply of walking stick shanks, thumb sticks and long net pegs from some self-set ash saplings. They are to be grubbed out soon so getting a good store of useful shanks and pegs before they have gone. Done a batch today that are ready for drying out for next seasons campaign ....I have always used Hazel in the past so i will see how these perform in the field.
  15. I caught 3 apricot coloured moles from the same garden in a week once (one of which i still have set-up for posterity in a glass case).........obviously all part of the same family........i have been back many times since and only ever caught normal coloured moles. I have caught a similar coloured mole to the silver one though.........here it is next to a normal mole, don't really know what colour you would call it but i expect you get regional variations and mutations from time to time.
  16. Yeah Mal..........got enough supplies to see me for the next few years for sure.........luckily i have a few stick-dressers that i can keep supplied with quality shanks.
  17. Had some amazing good fortune today when i was informed an area of Ash self-set saplings was going to be cleared and grubbed out." Help yourself to whatever you want" was the answer to my request to cut a few walking stick shanks, thumb sticks and long net pegs. I cut some lovely straight shanks of mainly ash but a few hazel ones as well and a good supply of long net pegs. Nothing will be wasted as any shanks that don't make the grade will be used for snare and trap holding pegs and the thinner stuff for purse net pegs. What made me really smile was it was "Ash Wednesday".........You couldn't
  18. As a full time pest controller i get many requests to remove ferals from food stores, warehouses etc. ALWAYS ALWAYS notify the local police of your intended activities (time on and off site etc). Jo public hearing shooting or any pigeon lovers (feeders) will only be too keen to inform the police and if they turn up to investigate they won't be best pleased. As a matter of courtesy I give the incident room a call to let them know when i have left site as well.............they will give you a reference number to quote if a police officer challenges you. Hope this helps a bit.
  19. Thats a good little read the book is. He lived in the same village i live in now for a period of his life, before moving to Oadby in Leicestershire where he died. It's ironic that some of the same woods he describes poaching in...............I now have the job of controlling the rabbits in. Rolfe.
  20. I do an awful lot of squirrel trapping in domestic and commercial situations in the early part of the season and to be perfectly honest in my opinion a good quality cage trap(s) is all you really need. I have Kanias and wcs tube traps that i use in forestry or woodland situations and these work fine.........but so does a Mk6 fenn in a tunnel or a bodygrip in a cubby. I usually put a cage in the roof (as near the entry point as possible) on a board and baited with peanuts........and another cage in the garden somewhere along the access route to the roof.......Just out from the bottom of a wall
  21. I had just finished clearing the field of moles when the Lady of the manor asked if i would have a crack at some rabbits in some open buries in the same field. Good chance to give some young inexperienced ferrets a run out........and keep the dog on his toes. So the quickset, and a few purse nets were the order of the day........left a few holes uncovered to give the dog a run. Not many at home but we had a few and a nice relaxing couple of hours was had by all..........makes all the difference not HAVING to get results.
