If you are making your own pegs then straight Hazel or Ash wands are best for the job........length is a personal choice but i like mine around 20-21 inches long, this leaves the net at a setting height of about 18-19 inches to allow plenty of bagging or kill. i have never yet seen a rabbit jump a net at this height........they always try to push through.

Some classic well used runs there..........nice to see some heavy rabbit traffic about, but it pays to keep your eyes open for other snaring outlets........this run along the INSIDE of some sheep netting accounted for 26 rabbits in three nights of settings with wires set approx 10 metres apart. Most, if not all the Morons on here would be too thick to realise they are actually the "Morons" you are talking about. To them a poll is something that holds up the telephone wires........!

Snare is deemed a holding device nowadays and a (spring) trap is deemed a killing device.........obviously both can do either....!

Well as an Ex-player and the most Fiercely Patriotic England supporter ever.........I think Wales were hard done by.......the sending off was a complete farce...........yellow card maybe... at a pinch...........but red card NEVER. Wales were about the only side in the competition that looked like they WANTED to win the world cup........How the French can be in the final after losing twice is unbelievable.........Oh well...........Lets hope it's an All Black v France Final and the most deserving side wins........! Sorry to any Aussie supporters......but the AB'S are playing some fantastic rug

Had the first outing of the season today, we had to ferret a large garden with a few large buries and plenty of old sheds to provide a sanctuary for a few bunnies. The ferrets were a little rusty as was the dog and me, but we finished the day with a tidy little bag of 12 rabbits in tip-top condition for our efforts. The quick-set long net once again proved worth its weight in gold as we would have struggled to securely net around the old sheds without it..........!

fenn trap tips and tricks
Rolfe replied to NextGenerationTrapper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I think you are talking about a "Setting Stick" used during the trap setting procedure. It's simply a length of straight hazel about half-inch thick and 9-10 inches long that has a taper at one end that is inserted lightly under the trap pan to hold it in position whilst sieved earth is used to cover the trap. They are useful for speading the earth evenly over the pan and also for carefully disengaging the safety catch to leave the trap in the set position (it removes the risk of getting fingers trapped in the final setting process should the trap accidently fire) -
Why do you need trap pan covers...........sieved earth is perfectly adequate so why add extra work and complicate proceedings.?

Mark 1 Imbra has the spring fitted to BOTH jaw ends.........Mark 2 Imbra has spring fitted to one jaw only.........! Rolfe.

Imbra's every time for rabbit control...........i use then almost exclusively on my longterm rabbit contracts and in my opinion they are far the better than Mk6 Fenns in most rabbit trapping situations. Rolfe.

You want to be using Mk 4 for rats.......they will kill rats of all sizes........the Mk6 is for bigger quarry.........and will miss the smaller rats........!

Old Ratty pays the Price........!
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Most if not all mouse/rat infestations centre around the kitchen area or very close to it. An increasingly common entry point for old ratty is the cat-flap if the door has one. They are very adept at slipping through and pinching dog and cat food and pretty soon take up residence behind the plinths of the work units. Recently on pulling a tumble drier out from under a work unit I found the rats nest actually ON TOP of the drier literally inches under the worktop. Increasingly I am getting entry points from the sewer system and this I think has a lot to do with the water companies no longer rou -
I got a call from a customer….could I come and sort their “Mouse” problem out as they were chewing up the carpet. I duly answered the summons and was shown some damage to the carpets where the heating pipes came up from below the floor-boards. It was obvious that this was NO mouse damage……….old Ratty had been trying to enlarge the entrance from the room side of the hole. I relayed the news to the client who said it was impossible as he had two dogs in the house……I was then taken to see the basement and a pile of rat droppings and typical smear marks up the corner of the room to the under floor

You have basically answered your own question.........the squirrels have an abundant food source without having to go anywhere near your Kania. The same trap set when natural food was in short supply would almost certainly pay dividends. The squirrels will be looking to store the walnuts in the near vicinity so a bodygrip in a cubby or Fenn in a tunnel at the base of the tree would be more productive. If it is safe to do so..........a carefully placed shot from a suitably powered air-rifle would be the quickest answer.

opinions vary and each to his own choice...........my pegs are 21-24 inches depending on ground conditions this gives me an eighteen to twenty inch setting height, again depending on ground conditions..........allows for plenty of bagging at this height to wrap the bunnies up.

Not What I Expected To Find........!

Nod......Never come across any black un's as yet.......plenty of the Grey buggers though, i run a trapline all year round to try and control their numbers on a few on my contracts and there seems a never ending supply at times. Dytkos...Thanks mate........I try and put up anything a bit unusual or interesting but i sometimes wonder if its worth it at times with some of the numpties on here ...lol...! -
Checking one of my most productive squirrel cages today (44 Squirrels from this one this year) I was suprised to find this rather agitated little fella had managed to get himself trapped. The cage is sited about four feet off the ground on a fallen pine tree that has conveniently lodged itself against an adjoining tree. The cage hasn't caught for a week or two so can't imagine it was the scent of a squirrel that attracted it..........just its inquisitive nature i suppose or maybe it had turned vegetarian and taken a fancy to the hazel nuts .........!

Had a sort of "Busmans Holiday" yesterday when one of the most rabbit damaged fields on one of the farms i do the pest control on was being harvested. The long narrow field runs along side a busy railway line so safety was of paramount importance so the dogs were out of the question. I decided to run 175 yards of long netting alongside the railway track side of the field as this was where all the rabbits would make for. I stood in the middle of the net run with the shotgun as from past experience the last cut produces a lot of bunnies and not being as nimble as i once was........would struggl
