ive got a few thousand to sort. spoke to DEFRA, although on the vermin list, i still needed a licence to kill them during the breeding season which was free so all well and good. they dont like the 17hmr in em lol, that was another of my questions, can they be rifle shot? Yes they CAN be rifle shot........I use my .22 Rimmy........BUT..... I had to have Canada Geese added to my Firearms Certificate as a named species. Just check that out with your local Firearms Dept....Not all counties apply the same rules...!

The secret is to always have some snares weathering whilst still using the old ones When I used to run big snare lines I sometimes had 250 wires out at one time and would get through them at a rate of knots, so I always had freshly weathered snares to replace the unservicable ones as and when required. Just hang a bunch of new wires outside for a couple of weeks they will soon dull down..........to be honest.......at night and on fast killing runs it doesn't make much difference if they are new or weathered........the rabbit should be hitting at speed. Where I think it DOES make a difference

Took these this morning of the frogs dropping spawn ON TOP of the netting over my pond put there to stop Mr Heron from availing himself to a free meal.......! Nikon Coolpix L120 used.

No point.........swanseajack has won it already.........

Thats certainly the biggest mole i have ever seen.........Thanks for showing it...........I do hope you are going to preserve him for posterity........a visit to the taxidermist is in order me thinks....! Don't know what the biggest mole recorded is.........but that has got to be a contender...!

A 9 inch mole........! Would love to see a picture of that, I have caught !000's but nothing anywhere as big as that. I have caught one "Big Un" and have enclosed a picture alongside a normal sized mole.....but nowhere near as big as 9 inches......!

I have been taking young rabbits in EVERY month of the year for several years now, the days are long gone when you could ferret up until April. I am cage trapping at the minute and 90% of my daily catches are young-uns, often 2 or 3 in the same cage.

Rabbit cages catching well........!
Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I am a full time pest controller paid to get rid of ALL rabbits on this particular contract........these fryer's are very tasty in a stir-fry but the ferrets do get the bones with the meat removed...! -
Rabbit cages catching well........!

Same as the rabbits.......... -
Clearing up the young rabbits as predicted (11) in three days using six cages........sometimes you get the unexpected..........but still a brilliant method of clearing out the young of the year until spring trapping time arrives....!

Yawn yawn............usual suspects.........usual pointless shite.............Our anti-hunting enemies must be loving watching the self destruct button.........!

Horses for courses you accept what YOU want of your dog.......Me... I expect my net-dog to hold a pursed rabbit in a net till i can get to it ,the same as he will secure a rabbit in a long net, but i am involved in full time rabbit control so that may make a difference. My dog is very soft mouthed so never kills a rabbit in a net..........I find it a bonus that he understands the way a rabbiting team should operate.........as a team....!

A fawn i found last year.........I watched it for 3 days then the doe moved it on....!

Squirrels bite out the growing tip of acorns before burying them to prevent germination........!

I agree entirely that there is more to using cubby than to protect from non-target species...but the original question merely asked if it would be legal. As with all trapping the skill of the trapper to adapt and modify any setting to ensure a clean and humane kill should always be of paramount importance....!
-
Would be perfectly legal and safe to use providing it prevented non-target species getting trapped. I was fortunate several years back when i picked up some half-moon shaped wire garden cloches about eight feet in length which i cut to eighteen inch sections which were ideal for covering fenns......better in a way than wooden box tunnels because you could see instantly if you had a catch without disturbing the setting and also they can be pinned to the ground using a metal T bar.

Sounds more like a mink may have been active around the tree roots........they store fish in larder type stashes........i could be wrong as old ratty will also take fish if the water is low enough........just a thought.

Rolfe replied to Rolfe's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Just a guess..........but are you using zoom when taking macro pics?.........i made that mistake and if you use the camera in macro without any zoom features they should be ok. -

Thanks for the comments guys and gals.........i was pleased with the results anyway...........not the best pictures in the world but ok for a numpty like me lol. I have yet to use the macro mode.........which i understand is pretty impressive on this camera....watch this space and i will post the results........! -
Well sure

These bloody birds don't sit still long enough to get a good picture lol.........managed to get these two pictures........albeit using optical zoom.

Just bought a Nikon coolpix L120 half-price at Argos at the minute (£129.00) and so far i am quite impressed. Now i am NO photographer just a point and click merchant but i do like taking pictures but no top of the range stuff for me.......just an easy to use "snapper" suits my needs. I have put a few pictures on that i have just taken and although the photographers among you may notice the quality of the finished article, to me they look perfectly acceptable. The close up sheeps head was taken at about 35 yards distance using the 21x optical zoom ( not fully extended i might add) and the bird

Just brought one today.........my canon digital has just packed up. Only given it very little use ....just a few trial pictures today till i get used to it. First impressions it is a fantastic camera. 21x Digital zoom is amazing.........the picture on here was taken at about 35 yards distance using digital zoom.........not to full extent i might add. I am NO photographer but i dont think that is too bad an image at that distance. Easy to use.........even a numpty like me can work it out.........!

It's just great to be able to enjoy a couple of hours doing what i love without the pressure of HAVING to produce results.....still gives me just as much pleasure to catch one or two for the pot as it does to catch a hundred or more........i have never been into the numbers game.....just nice to relax and watch the animals do what they are bred for.....!

Bit of a busmans holiday for me to be honest being involved in pest control every working day but it was nice to get out with some young ferrets and a pocket-full of nets to do some small open buries without the need to get results. It was on an old bank that is normally waist deep in nettles later in the year that has just a few isolated one or two hole buries..........I think the largest had four holes and these are ideal for giving the underworked youngsters some practice. It felt like going back to my youth again, just me, the lurcher and a handful of nets how things used to be in the go
