  1. I always aim to set the last wire just as it gets too dark to set anymore and then check them at first light in the morning....before the corvids have time to find them. So depending on how many you are setting.... dusk and dawn are the most productive times as it's during this period that the rabbits are most active. Rolfe.
  2. This extract is taken from the defra code of practice on the use of snares in fox and rabbit control. Make of it what you will. Under the Wildlife and Countryside act 1981 the use of a "self-locking" snare is unlawful; only free running snares can lawfully be set. The term self-locking is not defined in the Act and there has been no successful prosecution within a high court enough to clarify the law by legal precedent. Rolfe.
  3. Never Test The Depth Of Water With Both Feet......!

  4. Rather a strange request in a way, but i am hoping someone may be able to help out a good friend of mine (A full time pest controller like me) who's faithful little bitch was tragically hit by a motor and killed whilst out on Christmas Eve. She never left his side normally but chased after a rabbit on the field side of a hedge and tried to get back to him by running up a normally very quiet village road with disastrous consequences. He is naturally devastated as he had such a bond with her. He is looking for a beddy/whippet type rabbiting bitch (19-22ins), about two years old would be ok as he
  5. Thanks for all the nice comments. I have seen the same thing a few times over the years but it never seems to happen when you have a camera handy.......until now Rolfe.
  6. Oh how i wish i had a better camera with a quality zoom lens. I was at the golf course talking to the greenkeepers when a speeding rabbit came rushing past us, closely followed by a stoat in full hunting mode. Luckily i had my camera with me, as i was intending to get a few shots of the trees covered in a hoare frost. The stoat brazenly let me get quite close to take some amazing shots as it swiftly overpowered and killed the rabbit. I find it incredible that such a tiny predator can overpower and kill an animal so much bigger than itself. As i said.........A zoom lens on a quality camera and
  7. Den...I agree with what you are saying but in reality it would take a permanent Mod presence in the chat room to control it effectively. The problem is, it is not just the non-posters that think it is acceptable to sexually intimidate the female members some so-called established chat-room inhabitants also think that all the females in the chat-room are fair game. As you point out, most of the girls can give as good as they get....and soon give these idiots short thrift, but they should not have to be subjected to it in the first place, banter is one thing.....but a few take it too far. Quick set

Had mine from Brian Brinded many years ago and it has served me well....have a look at the site http://brian.brinded.tripod.com/
  9. Thanks for the nice comments.......Yes I always remember that we all had to start out somewhere......and there is No substitute for experience, so a few helpful tips and ideas never go amiss....there is always something new we can learn, in fact we never stop learning in this game Rolfe.
  10. Just had a nice couple of hours on the golf course ferreting under a few ancient sweet chestnut trees. It was easy to spot the well used holes at the tree base, so it was a case of wrap the quickset round and slip the ferrets in. Ended the short session with 6 plump winter bunnies on what was a cold but gloriously sunny winters day....! Judging by old Charlies footprints in the snow........he'd been hunting bunnies too.
  11. Thats what everyone thinks.......but actually it is heading towards the Top of the picture. It puts its front two feet down first (the small prints) then brings its rear legs through and past its front feet as it bounds along. Good on you for having a guess though.......and to be fair......most people would assume it was the other way round.
  12. This is aimed at the younger members of the forum or beginners at rabbit snaring that sometimes have trouble in identifying the runs rabbits are most frequently using. So any old hands out there please forgive me for stating "The bleeding Obvious" In snowy conditions.......walking a fence line will instantly show you which runs are seeing the most rabbit traffic on. This can save a lot of time and effort in setting wires on runs with little or no rabbit activity. On a fence line, it is easy to see where the rabbits are jumping through the fence in the snow and these can be remembered or m
  13. Nope.........quite legal......mouse traps don't come under the spring trap approval order.
  14. It's one i brought in Spain.......20 years ago.......don't know what they are called but they are very effective. Rolfe.
  15. Caught these two little perishers .........been pinching the ferret food. Even they won't go to waste though. A taxidermist friend of mine has them to put in the beaks of birds of prey that he is commissioned to do.
  16. If the raw tripe, rabbit, etc. has been frozen for a couple of weeks before feeding to the dogs then there is NO risk to them getting worms from it. The freezing process makes sure of that.
  17. Nice pictures Mooshka.......The Coal Tit often gets mistaken for the Great Tit....you are lucky to have them visiting your table.
  18. 110's will do the job perfectly......116's are suited to bigger quarry and are overkill where rats are concerned.
  19. Yes.......and in my experience you will always catch more rabbits in the first quarter when the moon is on the rise than you will in the last quarter. Rabbits tend to travel further afield during this period .......don't ask me why.....i don't know, but it does seem to happen that way for some reason. Rolfe.

  21. Not a problem Lass.......
  22. Now Now Girls........i am happy to share ;)
  23. Thanks Guys and Gals for all your nice comments.....much appreciated even by this old fart Dont know if it's Lass or Trace in the picture but whoever it is... she can blow my candles out as many times as she wants ;) Thanks Everyone Rolfe.
  24. She's a baby yet.......and she will have plenty of time to come good. She seems an intelligent bitch ......she's not seeing the ones at the extreme of the beam and doesn't see the point of running for no reason. Take that as a good sign, and as suggested give her some nice easy slips to build her confidence up and she will turn out a "Good Un" I'm sure. More potenially good dogs are ruined by entering too early in my opinion, so take it nice and slowly, you wouldn't expect a boy to do a mans job would you.....Good Luck. Regards Rolfe.
