Some years ago when I was working up in Elgin, an old guy told me just that! He also said that you catch them by placing a long net around the base of the hill and chase them with sticks till you get them running then you stop and turn round to run at them as they come around the hill at you, they then try and turn around to run away but because one leg is shorter than the other they roll down into the net...hey presto! LMAO did you believe him Turn it in Scothunter ! I'll tell you what though, we had some belting nights sat at the bar in the St Leonards Hotel, How this old lad kept

Hi all, Only got pictures of a few deer and wild boar but they don't count as they certainly weren't taken with my rapid 7 but I would like to ask what's with that cr*p on the 1st picture of page 2. Not good by any stretch of the imagination. Can one of you mods sort it? Cheers, Pete.

Great going there, I knock over a dozen or so when the dumping on our products gets too much for the customers to put up with! Even better to see the young un sorting them out. good on the both of you.

Well that time of year finally got here and I was as like a kid at Christmas as I packed the car to set off on the epic five hour drive. All the way there I lived every possible shot at least twice and I decided the journey, seeing as how this was now the second time I had done it would now be classed as a pilgrimage! Being so far from home meant I had packed the car the with every thing possible and as as the heavens opened when I approached Birmingham it seemed to follow me for next three or four hours making me glad I had gone for two sets of waterproofs! We set off in the wind and rain ab

To be honest I may have to do just that, but after a 500 mile round trip and a blanking session because I did not take a boar that presents a shot may really pi** me off. These boar are causing considerable damage so if a boar presents its self then I think it will be lights out and hope that I get a chance at a sow also ( for the meat ). The purpose of my post was requesting information on boar taint and many thanks to those that helped me out. At least now I feel more able to make an informed choice, knowing more about the meat quality of boar. On a closing note, I reckon a few choice her

Years ago I dont mind saying that I could could indeed shoot the proverbials off a gnat but never tried a boar! dont reckon he'd be reet pleased about it either. On a serious note, as I understand it so far, removing the testicles post mortem would be a bit late as the tainting is already present in the meat/fat. Does anyone know if this tainting is present in all boars or is it pot luck? Pete.

What causes boar taint? Boar taint is caused by two naturally occurring compounds known as androstenone and skatole, the odour of which is said to be comparable to sweat, urine and faeces. The two compounds can accumulate in the meat of boars (male pigs) whose testicles have not been removed or castrated. If available in high quantities, the compounds can be detected by people through taste and smell when they cook or heat the pork meat or meat products. Androstenone is basically a pheromone and is produced in the boar’s testes once it has reached sexual maturity. As the boar ages, andr

Thanks for that, it may have saved me from making a bugger of things. These are not feral to my knowledge, I would suspect that even if they were from a once feral line the gene pool will be so far diluted by now that the effect of the domestic strain will not be noticeable. regards, Pete.

Dear all, Earlier this year I was lucky enough to get a good amount of wild boar and it was bloody gorgeous to eat!! If I am lucky again (next week) I want to take the whole carcas and even freeze a joint Christmas dinner. My questionis this, Does the meat of the male wild boar species suffer from boar taint ? My last batch was from a sow and was absolutely great but I have been told that the tusks from a good size male are all I would get off him as the meat would be no good!! is this really the case or am I being mis-lead. I would really appreciate any info as I would not want to take a be

That's a great read and a great result, well done. I have a trip planned for week after next, hope I have something to post! Well done again. Pete.

Got to agree with that, got the live, remastered cd in the motor, Kids hate it when I put it on, all except the youngest, funnily enough called Rosie, she sings along and I even have a phone vid of her doing her version of whole lotta Rosie, priceless!!

RIFLE CALIBRE HAVE I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE?
BIGPETE replied to gamegunner's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
I think this has been one the best threads I have read for a while, very informative and loads of experiences offered that will help tremendously when I eventually do get my ticket. What does seem to be the best advice and is something that I would deffinitely go along with is this.. hit the ruddy target where you intended and ensure a clean kill, consistently. Within the legal boundaries of quarry/calibre this should be by far the most important factor, carcas damage second. I have shot fallow with .308 and 7mm08, highland reds with .270 and .308 and wild boar with .308 and I am very pleased -
Cheers for that Harrycatcat, that is by far the best deal I have seen anywhere so far! it is indeed a shame you are so far away. Sat down and showed him what I was thinking of and thanks to the magic of youtube he could see some footage, the response was not what I expected, said he would rather eat his own kidney's than do that and could he have the wonga instead !!. I won't print my reply ! but heh, each to their own, I wont push him. I'm away after a boar or two in couple of weeks so hopefully will have something a bit more exiting to post. Thanks for everyones help re the clay pigeon sh

Absolutely spot on you two, cracking shooting and well done to the pair of you and from what I have seen/read on this forum you have done far too much first class stalking and pest control to bother what that tit of the first degree posts. Good shooting, keep at it because if I can't get out my self at least I can read about it.

OXO, HPOOL-HUNTER AND SSSSHONEFORTHEPOT. Many thanks for the replies guys I greatly appreciate your help. I will give them all a call to see what the crack is. Best regards, Pete.

I reckon that is the most likely, also a worn sear will have the same effect but check the length of the mainspring, it is many years since I stripped and maintained springers but I seem to remember you had to remove a coil or two for some models otherwise the compressed spring is too large to allow the sear to engage fully. Either way you have a very serious problem that you best sort out sharpish. regards, Pete.

Hello all, I hope this is the right forum mods but please move if not. I have recently had some success in getting the lad (15 years old) off his ruddy play station and got him out fishing, he has even been a couple of times off his own back. I want to keep the motivation going for things out doors and would like to take him for a crack at some clays. I have only ever done this once and that was years ago at Mirfield (west yorks) and I need to find somewhere or someone within say half hours drive of Newcastle that will do an hour or so tuition for us both. I would really appreciate a heads

A good informative video there Mac. Well done. If I may, and its not meant as a derogatory comment but more as pointer for anyone new to the sport, I was always taught and I believe it is good practise to always close the gun to barrel whilst keeping the muzzle pointed at the ground or at least on an angle towards it. Two reasons, the first is that a loose pellet in the breach will not fall out as was common with some of the old Webleys, 2nd and more importantly is that if the air rifle goes off then it is less likely to cause injury or damage. Just a pointer, hope you dont take it the wrong

It certainly did the business with the one I shot !

Thanks for that John, it was a genuine oversight, I even edited sh*t to say tish just in case it was offensive. Too old for that text talk carry on anyway, I used it as a recognised abbreviation that was used as such before mobile telephones were about ! but you are right John and whats goes for one should go for all so wrist slap duly accepted. Cheers Pete.
