  1. So Glyn, by your way of thinking, would you say then that a terrier when entered as a youngster should stay until dug no matter what the depth as they are working for themselves?
  2. I think that the steady dog most of the time grabs hold on breakthrough because they know you’re not far from breaking through and grab hold in case the quarry tries to push, not because they’re jealous of you taking it off them.
  3. Well put Rob, the best digging dogs I’ve seen had little or no interest in a dead fox. And some of the shittiest, cowardly dogs I’ve seen would rag one like it’s life depended on it. Edited to add, when it was legal we would always let the quarry run, I often thought it fired the dog up more than just shoot and give a rag.
  4. I don’t agree with that Glyn. I think the odd terrier that is totally mute and reckless will maybe do what you say. But the average working terrier is in some way working for it’s owner as much as itself. I think that’s the main idea of digging pups in easy spots, to get them in to the routine of entering, working, being dug to (repeat, repeat and so on). Until it’s second nature to them and they have total trust in you that you’ll be digging them whether they’re in 10 minutes or 5 hours.
  5. Seen two hares boxing yesterday myself, couldn’t believe it.
  6. I’m not sure if they know the depth, but time to ground IMO is a much better barometer to go off than depth when digging dogs. A dog goes to ground in a 1 holer and is dug at 6 ft in an hour, a different dog is dropped into a 20 holer, gets the run around for 2 hours and is then dug at 3ft. Which dog has put in the better performance?
  7. My mate used to have a bull/whippet that did that exact same thing numerous times, the bloody thing would go to ground like a terrier. Once they get that knack they can be an absolute god send on a dig.
  8. Slape coated I think the old fell terrier men used to call it. Is it Tug in the pic Dilly? Looks well.
  9. Nice dog Chesney, not sure on the fashion sense mind!?
  10. As long as it doesn't hinder them from eating I can't see a problem. I have a dog and bitch that are both slightly overshot, but I suppose if you're breeding them tight enough such things will surface. Like above...who cares?
  11. Terrier work is in safe hands for the foreseeable future, plenty of lads out there that are die hard enthusiasts.
  12. By reading his recent book you'd say they were well worked, unless that was bullshit too?
  13. £300 a pup? Pups from someone else of a breed the man himself doesn't even keep? I always thought better of DH than that, enjoy his books but he needs to practise what he preaches if this is true?
  14. ABC are you now beginning to understand why lads keep close circles and only gift to people within them? Because of bullshitters like this.
  15. You in the Paras Stiffmeister? My mate has just got back from Kenya too with work.
  16. Nice offer DC, have you totally finished with the terriers now then?
  17. No offence to the OP but he initially asked for a patterdale x russell, so I'm guessing it's for a bit of bushing etc? So why would lads that keep and breed digging terriers just give one to a stranger that won't get worked how it was intended to do? ABC you seem too quick to judge people.
  18. The problem being that most decent lads who try to do the right thing i.e gifting pups to people they don't know personally on the word of someone else, have had their fingers burnt. The fact of the matter is in the terrier world there is too many that think nothing of their dogs, chop and change with the fashion etc etc. So why should die hard digging lads that devote their life to their terriers just hand them out to idiots? I've met hundreds of lads with terriers over the years, how many would I say are good terrier men? Literally a handful.
  19. Good to hear she's working well for you, if she's working as steady as she looks I'd keep throwing the work at her.
  20. Because they gift them to friends they know personally rather than strangers from the internet, that's pretty obvious isn't it?
  21. I have one of them plastic bread baskets in each kennel and they seem to curl up nice and warm in them and never piss in them either.
