Those were good days weren’t they my friend.

Mate of mine had 103 foxes for a weekend, pushing creeks and running stubbles. Heading over there this year for a few weeks foxing.

Bull greyhounds or saluki bull greyhounds?

Yep … use it for hunting elephant seals and walrus’s in the far north. -

For the record the expensive dog wasn’t a Lurcher that would be stupid. It also wasn’t an xl bully before anyone says -

I’ve had working dogs for free plenty and most I’ve paid for a dog was £3600 ish depends how badly you want the dog. -

Loads of game. But camera phones, the internet and tech in general has changed things a lot !

Have you seen the new top end Hiks? Was playing about with my mates … and you could see the heat signature from the dog farting!

Bull greyhounds or saluki bull greyhounds?
Whoknows replied to Backandbeyond's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I have three, all along a similar theme, but all subtly different. One is a nephew of the above mentioned dog. A mate has a son of the dog mentioned above and another a daughter. It’s like everything, you cannot put into a dog what is not there. All most of us are trying to achieve is a physical body capable of carrying a dog to its quarry, but it’s the heart in it which decides what happens then. -
Bull greyhounds or saluki bull greyhounds?

Best dog I’ve ever run was a bull Grey back to a saluki bull grey, just had that touch of saluki, looked like a 28 inch racy bull cross but with the lungs and feet of a saluki. Was a bull x in attitude and working style but ram like an Exocet missile and did it over and over again. I’ve never seen a dog catch game like it. Sadly he was dead before he was four. First slip of the first proper night of the season, made a hell A catch on a big angry lad and then had a heart attack on my arms. Luckily his blood live on. Don’t discount that drop of saluki or collie in your bull Dog. -

I’m four pints in and set for the night so ignore me dogs are all broke and it’s foggy so you have the pleasure of my abuse. I actually like your dogs and you have the tenacity of a good terrier on crack so I don’t mind you either.

Was up in Lincolnshire last week with a bull x. Over rated, ugly place full of yokels but they did have a skittle alley.
-
F*cking jail bait those things.

It’s amazing the knocks they can take subduing deer, especially the bigger and angrier specimens. I would think to have any longevity in the sport, whatever cross, would need a bit of thickness and bone to it. Obviously a bit of size and strength would be beneficial too. Mind you it’s crazy what a small driven dog will manage to do even if it is a big messy and often ends in tears.
-
I would agree with you there. The best dogs I’ve owned and seen were Lurcher to Lurcher with bull and something else, usually collie or saluki. Just the right blend to give useful attributes from both. Well in theory. Usually works out well once someone has gone to the pain of weeding out the crap and getting the line / family to some sort of self producing consistency.

Bull greyhounds or saluki bull greyhounds?
Whoknows replied to Backandbeyond's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The right amount of saluki is belting in a bull x. The wrong sort or amount is a headache but then I’m a simple creature who likes simple creatures. -
Interesting cross, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one, but did hear of a good one. Makes sense on paper. I’ve really never owned a dog without bull in it so I’m under qualified to pass comment too much on other crosses.
-
Always used to free cast the running dogs but then got better bushers and now generally have runner on a slip. Also means you can choose to not kill everything you run into and actually get to go and hunt what you’d intended to
-
Any particular xs or dogs spring to mind ?
-
What crosses out of interest joe, with no bull, would have been regularly used on the bigger species of deer pre ban. Any you care to mention.
-
Here’s a question, which I’m fairly sure I know the answer to; but should kick off a discussion when it comes to dropping the bigger species, in particular fallow bucks. Would there be many dogs that were capable of it regular that had no bull in them ?
-
That’s probably the best bit of it. Working for it. Actual hunting.
