I have springers, cockers, labs and a hungarian vizsla asked which breed is best out of those I would chosethe springer every time they really are the maid of all work and used for all types of shooting without fault. There's nothing my springers won't do on a shoot day As regards letting the pup interact with others, my pups all grow up having fun, meet the neighbours and their kids, it's all part of socialisation but it needs a few ground rules such as don't let kids play tug with the pup, and endless retrieves, commands need to be the same used by you and your girlfriend. Remember enj

I would agree with Steve, I try and trial spaniels and I am always desperate for new ground to train on and bunnies to shoot for the dogs, so I doubt very much that this person who has asked you would risk not being invited back and will be respectful when using your ground. There may well be one or two people out with him, as you can't train a trial dog on your own, but I am sure there will not be big shoot days and hosts of people, as others have said ask him straight and lay a few ground rules. Nicola :hmm: NICOLA IF YOU ONLY TRY TO TRIAL SPANIELS WOULDNT LIKE TO B RUNNING A

Hi V-Max, the person enquiring knows a good friend of mine, i have meet him a few times & he is a good man, i don't mind him using the land but i just wanted some advice as to how much work is normally done with the dogs & over what period of time. Many thanks It all depends mate his he a trainer who trains other peoples dog or is he a Trialler. If its just one guy and possibly plus one and you know its more for the dogs steadying and simulation shootin in the field instead of there every morning and night killing everything.Ask the guy straight i..f you give permission hes n

The advice given so far is excellent, hope the foot heals soon, I use a cream called Derma gel with my dogs cuts and scratches, even when they have had open wounds the cream seems to make healing so much quicker, can be bought on here :- http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/prodinfo.asp?number=DERMGEL100 Nicola

Deek I am sure you won't be dissapointed, only sorry off the top of my head I don't know of anyone up here with cocker litters at the moment, I know a nice litter of springers in Ireland where I am getting a pup from, I will keep my ears open for cocker litters up here or on the border There is a nice litter in Lancashire here, v v nice breeding ! not too far away ? http://classifieds.country-classifieds.com...;query=category Nicola

So the pups are a result of an accidental mating and undocked ......... need I say more..There are lots of litters out there and some available in Scotland, if it were me I would be shopping around.. Nicola

Jamesy well said I agree wholeheartedly with what you have posted. Nicola

Thanks Dawn

I must confess I am slightly biased as the labs I own are dark yellow and fox red but we have recently aquired a black addition from Ireland but the fox reds have the edge for me. I have seen a few working chocolate labs but for me they seem to lack the drive and when you look at the pedigrees the chocolate colouring seems mainly concentrated round the show lines rather than the working lines, however there has been a recent change and I even heard a chocolate has now won a field trial and even the halsteads (drakeshead) have chocolate labs in their kennels trying to introduce more w

depends how you look at it mate if it is beating through thick cover then you will eventually be looking at an expensive tail dock /amputation which also could get to the infected stage and not only will be expensive but painful and sore and tails generally dont heal Thats worset case senario though. I have lots of pictures of spaniels with full tails that have been worked and therefore have evidence (which I am happy to email to you ) to show that it's cruel to work a full tailed spaniel, with docking exemptions in place it is easy enough to find docked pups so they are r

Each bitch is different my old spaniel bitch used to go training every day she was in season, no change in her nature nor ability, where we have another bitch here that we leave util 2 or 3 weeks after her season has ended as she just mooches and switches off, they are all different which makes our life harder at times Nicola

Lonewolf, have sent you a pm Nicola

Paul it's not a case of criticising your post, sorry if you thought it was but with docking being so controversial in this day and age its best to err on the side of caution, it has already been suggested on the topic that you can have someone else take your pups to a vet and have them docked, thats breaking the law ! if you are happy to do that then fair enough, I don't have a problem with that, if you check the defra website it states what the legal requirements are now for having your litter docked, it's nothing to do with whether you shoot or not, it's about providing the evidence that t

Thanks for good luck..Well the day went well only one feck up sent her for simple retrieve on large cock bird 30 yrds out as she got to it,it got up again she couldnt work out how to pick it..After three attempts backward and forward she worked it out...My fault shes only picked two phessies before shes allways been on rabbits.. . As for your pup you wont screw it up these little dogs are the business for rough shooting walk up or driven..They hunt different to springers there a lot more cheekier a bit more of a challenge than a springer but the time and effort you put in will pay dividen

It's conversations like this that should not be had on an "open forum " afterall the docking exemptions are thereto keep the politicians happy, and the paperwork has to be above board, which obviously it's not given this conversation this far, and anyone can read the forum....just a word of caution..
