  1. Dont underestimate the standard poodle i had a mate who had one it was mustard on the lamp where speed aint a must it also took fox doubled up he bred her with a bred down grew but the pup had to be clipped all the time because it had a coat like an afghan.
  2. Great stamp of hounds and terriers mate nowt wrong with black n tans they look brill!
  3. imo i dont think it matters on the colour of your dog if your out lamping most of the time you get chased is because theyve seen a lamp not because theyve seen a white dog chasing rabbits and if theyve got nite site your fecked anyhow  Perhaps you should reply to what I actually posted - I was talking about freelancing IN THE DAY not at night! White dogs show up literally miles away in the daytime whereas brindles dont, you can hide in a hedge with a brindle, you cant do that with a white dog. Black dogs also show up too much for my taste. If you do a lot of daytime sne
  4. Interesting thread lads good reading heres a link to some info on the russian strain http://www.peds.co.uk/afghan/bhghruss.htm

  7. Belting pup gonna be a big un! Good to hear your learning the lad.
  8. Cracking looking dog know where your coming from soon lose your permission if the dogs had a go at the landowners keepers etc! fair point.
  9. I aint getting into no argument if youve not trained a lurcher for manwork as you put it you may get a suprise they soon learn that the arms only a faint and usually try for a throat hold just look at the size of some of the deer thats been taken if youve any doubts at their ability as i said before all my dogs have been trained to guard or tackle out never had any problems with this and the dogs love it ive worked with allies[weak back legs] and rotties[weak necks] and some lurchers bite as hard as pits. i just wondered if anybody else took this route now that theres loads of bullxs about.
  10. Start jumping training on walls start small and work your way up a lot of dogs are unsure of the give in fences get its confidence up on solid objects then you should have no trouble.
  11. Dont think i explained myself very well i didnt mean through nervousness my dogs only guard when told to guard or when their on the yard there sound with folks on the street and kids, dogs etc imo a lurchers as good as any breed to use for guard work ive seen some evil examples and its a trait that used to be required all the travellers i knew as a child had a good dog chained outside their vans. I poach alone and i aint got permission and a dog with this disposition suits me i do a lot of my work in dense woodland and the dogs let you know when anyones about returning straight to me with hack
  12. Does anyone on here guard train their lurchers i have always kept nasty dogs i find a dog with a good dose of agression comes in well handy itll let you know if anyones about[keepers etc] and a time or two theyve saved me from being escorted to the local bobbyshop it doesnt take no time to learn em to guard your catch and attack train em stops dog thieves too.
  13. WELL DONE MARK!!! Dogs look brill credit to you.
  14. Unless it requires a greyhound vet take em to P.D.S.A and just leave a donation i always take em some old blankets too as their always short i get the feeling their trainee surgeons getting ready for hospital.
  15. IT takes a lot of skill to train your dog to long net but it can be done get the dog to learn what the net is in the daytime jumping over etc then try to learn it not to tackle out in the net by chucking ball dummie etc if you ferret with your dog and youve learnt him not to hold the bolted rabbits you neednt do this and if you aint got permission make sure the dog is 100% on recall and stay. if you can try long netting some warrens when ferriting first and the dog will soon click theres no easy way round learning to net youve just got to get out there and do it its a big learning curve and i
  16. Pure fashion, deerhounds went out Collie crosses came in to fashion thanks to the books by P*****r and H*****k, then saluki crosses came in and later bull crosses - although I think that these seem to be on their way out a bit now. All crosses have their enthusiasts. I have tried all of these and come back to the deerhound cross as my first love although I may very well get a pure bred deerhound bitch as my next dog. A lot depends on what you want a dog for, if it's just rabbiting then they are not the best dog for you, similarly if its only coursing then go with one of the line bred saluki bl
  17. I always thought 3 fingers or more between the shoulder blades meant they could get there head down low to run and pick up easier than a dog that has 2 fingers or less gap personaly i think stamina has a lot to do with the pain barrier and determination ive seen hares running with there tongue out but there running for there life whereas a lot of dogs give up when the going gets tough i also think confidence is a must a correctly entered dog only run at certaintys as a pup. doesnt ever think i cant catch when its older whereas a dog might have endless stamina but not look like it has when its
