They were as blue as that when picked wood blewits are blue all over and the colder it is outside the bluer they get wood blewits are smaller and harder to find and as they taste the same i stick to field blews they are at the peak of their season now and can be found everywhere

hi jane i also freeze a few for when the season runs out [end of december] cook em in butter till theyve absorbed all the liquid then cool and freeze in portions just defrost and finish em off in the bacon pan also good with chestnut stuffing in pheasants they are one of the best winter mushrooms cook em well and their good for you my grandpa always said they help keep colds away during the winter theres probably something in that as they are full of zinc and i havent had a winter cold in years i know the pic is not clear[mobile] but the photos from Big bald beautiful are spot on

With me its sport first meat second and spare cash from the bunnys gets saved for the dogs[petrol, vets fees, jabs etc] third. I learnt long ago its better to go on your own i dont have permission but can go anywhere i want and some places ive been going for over thirty years ive had places ruined by so called mates doing as they liked if you treat a place with respect no one will bother you but the first time something gets nicked or vandalised the locals will soon be down on you another thing ive found is its a lot easier keeping the dogs free of worms fleas and other ailments when you hunt on

I ate a few years ago just like young rabbit what put me off was the tics and fleas when skinning em otherwise not bad -
A nice little earner this time of year and with all the rain theres plenty about been fetching 20 to 30 pound a twice a week of field blewies i swap em for meat with the butcher works out at a couple of quid a pound he sells em on a pound a quater a good excuse to spy out land with the dog is mushrooming and it cant be helped if summat gets up in front of the old dog now and again

About the same except 25p extra for netted rabbits funny rabbits have been the same price since the early seventies and pheasants arent worth owt anymore cheaper to buy than go out with the cracker we used to get 3.50 a brace for em

like you say a lot is down to the trainer but nose and toughness should come through naturaly as i said its over 20 years since i was out with the little dogs just mooching but if i was going for one again it would definitely have to come from working stock same as if i was going for a racing dog id get one from racing stock their probably is some good strains that dont get tested because of their worth but if it was for bunnies id like to see the parents doing it. definitely a sport on its own bushing with one two or three little flying machines

Check out the size of the whippets on the old pics on the whippet forum http://www.thewhippetforum.com/ thats the size you want if its gonna be an allrounder at bunnies i.e work cover effectively and catching bolters ive found no bigger than 18 inches has been ideal the best daytime dogs ive ever had for rabbits were little whippets hard as nails strike in bramle and thorn and guarranteed to catch one or two on a walk round on their own where a bigger dog would be lucky to get one in a week theres a trend now for bigger whippets with the addition of greyhound blood if i were to go for one id g

Thought id add my pennysthworth ive seen dogs tackle fallow hinds and young bucks and kill em instantly in the fall or into trees one particular bitch was mustard at this and we missed a load of her kills as she would do this out of sight on many occasions and wouldnt back track to the kill you had to check her carefully for any deer fur on her then start looking for the carcass needless to say we would often find em days after ragged by foxes what a waste but more often than not wed track to the kill ourselves and there would be no marks on em apart from her clawmarks as shed tackled em i saw

when the dogs stalking the sitter and stops go to the other side of the rabbit so its in between you and the dog shes more liable to strike it then also if the bunny can see the dog holding it try picking it up yourself a lot of young dogs ive had have been like this at first but soon grow out of it i dont think its a fault and setting prey comes in handy on feathered game seen your vid REW and if shes a young un your doing no wrong shell only get better with experience all the best juckler!

i know no one rates plummer but for a novice the book complete lurcher is definitely worth a read

big numbers are possible but only for the first few nights in an area 60s and 70s soon go down to twentys and thirties as for a dog doing the ton on its own ive seen it done on moorsides with the gameholes blocked in the stonewalls but not often 50s and 60s in the right area is poss but ive seen a few dogs ruined [blown] when attempting big numbers 20 bunnys a night and your dog should be able to go whenever the weathers right if you need numbers its better to get a couple of longnets its a lot cheaper in the long run

another tale about sheep wire out lamping on a warm estate near mansfield went in a field that was full of dead sheep all were covered in blood it looked really sureal and i can sympathise with the farmers on this one at the side of the field we found the culprit it was a rotweiler and it had got itself tangled in the electric sheep netting it was raining and the thing was in a right mess getting a right good bolt every few seconds needless to say we left it where it was to get its just rewards in the morning

ive had pitbulls and lurchers that wouldnt finish the job once theyd retrieved if the fox or watever had no fight in it they werent interested even after many catches get yourself a good club and do the job yourself as long as the dogs holding or bringng it to you its doing its job if you were hunting for pelts the less marks the better
-
out with a mate one night in the rain he bent down to get through the hede got a wire on a wet temple and got sparked out for a few seconds another mate peed on one that was a scream but best i seen was when cops came to bust a mate for burgalry whod got a wire running round the garden connected to the mains for any dog thieves who might have had an eye on his bitch the bobby put his hands on the wire and it blew his hat off he quickly switcher it off and went outside protesting his innocence with his hand on the same wire but it did him no good he got 3years for the robbery and three mths con

Some pit strains make better crosses than others look for a longer legged strain there will be little or no litter wastage the only fault ive seen with this cross is their feet pits feet seem o.k so look for a strain of greyhound with no foot trouble
