  1. First time i went lamping was 1971 with a mini car battery and an old lucas lamp there wasnt many at it then but the barnsley lads had been doing it for at least a few years before that and probably in a few more places but it was the barnsley crew that brought it to our attention it wasnt much different than today lots more game about though and it was easier to make a living with the dogs twenty rabbits a night ment fifteen quid a night compared to an average weekly wage of about forty to sixty quid working and you can see why it caught on the game still educated as quick to the lamp as the
  2. Molly its not unusual for hedgehogs to come out in spells of mild weather theyve come out round me for last three weeks i would put it back outside and put a little cat food out at night as your right it might be hard for it to find food thats probably what it was doing out in the day by the way your not supposed to flea them they reckon they get withdrawls from a sudden reduction of fleas thats what ive read and been told on a few occasions
  3. Bitch looks well and at seven mths she should be fine bones are still growing and this should help with the healing four mths of rest and she should be good as new
  4. Where i live theres a lot of high ground but never many hares on it till they start to breed then they seem to congregate on the hills in numbers your dead right about em not liking the wet when the crops are up a lot of the hares can be found on the shortest grass fields they avoid the rape and corn like the plague they can be a real pain to avoid when running the dogs in summer. Ive seen them squatt flat many a time when being coursed and the dogs go flying by they soon seem to educate and if a hare can get away they often use the same trick again ive seen em go to ground when hard pressed b

Got signals near me we catch em when fishing just use a round landing net with four strings tied int one so that it lifts sraight up lay it in the margin and crumble some boilies into it first and last light and check it every 10 mins you can catch a good number in a short time o.k if you dont have permission or where your traps can be seen
  6. I would have thought calcium tablets with vitamin d and plenty of sunshine will help her im no expert but thats what i would give her stands to reason she will need more calcium for the callous thats forming check that the calcium tablets have vit d in if not get some as this will help her take in the calcium i wouldnt think about exercising her more than a small walk for at least three months good luck with the bitch
  7. One of the first sgns i look for when entering a new area to hunt is marks on the floor ive seen spaces cleared about three feet souare just down a couple of inches i always see these where fallow are but cant be sure why they are made i dont think this is where they are laying more of some sort of marking that the stags are doing anyone shed any light on this as its baffled me for years
  8. Only ever seen this twice each time there were about a dozen hares all in a perfect circle and all facing inwards whats that about then anybody know?
  9. On a different note, genuine working deerhound blood added to any lurcher makeup always seem to add that special something that makes them that bit better.... Theres a lot of truth in that couldnt agree more
  10. What have you noticed about hares i love watching em ive noticed a few things while out on the land they prefer the highest bit of land when breeding [is that so they can find each other easier] i can think of a lot of places where hares gather during breeding around where i live and there always around the highest point theyve got noses like bloodhounds and ive often seen em running on the scents of their mates been lucky enough to see em get into their seat a few times which involves a lot of circling backwards and forwards followed by a leap into the seat[making it hard for a predator to pi
  11. No mate never had a problem i only give em the one tablet a day never had any probs i give em them till ten or eleven mths old but have to agree if your feeding carcasses or a lot of bone they wouldnt be needed too much of a good thing and all that when i used to breed i always used calcium on the pups and you could see the bone coming on them compared to them that had none im no scientist just going on what ive seen with me own eyes like you say giving unnecessary vits and minerals do make for expensive urine but if the dogs are working flat out then a good suppliment i find also makes a diff

  15. Billybunter hi mate Do they ever find there way back or do they stay where they are released also i read somewhere that a lot of beekeepers were having trouble keeping their bees and had to keep buying new stock in is this true or just bull as i think it was Einstein who said that bees are the one to watch for the worsening state of the planet and their demise was a good indication of things to come cheers Juckler
  16. What variations in colour have you seen in different animals besides albinos where i am we get the odd black fox , black rabbitts and in one area red and white badgers they have been there for years living together with the normal colour billys so they must be breeding but dont seem to breed out id be interested as to wether any one else has seen different coloured animals
  17. Great to see mate! they like badgers have a sweet tooth then good to know not been any round us for at least eighty years or more the old boys in the pub used to talk about em when i was a kid one animal that ought to be reintroduced especially if they like them grey varmints
  18. I hunt some land thats just got small copses on it and the roe there stay pretty much together and cover an area of about 5 square miles i can never guarantee where they are gonna be and see them all over this range i think if theres not much cover for em they are forced to range whereas the other bits i see roe on are all large woods and the deer there are more easy to predict in there feeding habbits depending on what crops are about
