  7. Inan i think your onto something with a dog knowing its got time to kill on big land
  8. coursing dogs sometimes pee blood when theyve had a lengthy course or three ive seen it in dogs that are well fit when theyve been running hard according to one vet i spoke to which i think might be the reason is the kidneys banging if one of mine does it i cook some pearl barley and add it to its food helps flush the kidneys
  9. Top idea that frank as chucking a ball now and again pulls feck out of your shoulder
  10. its usually the dogs with less speed that will learn to lay off and just keep em in the field a fast dog has no need to the dog i used for retrieving during the winter used this style during the daytime and he was beardiexgrew
  11. I try and keep the dog in condition all the time but during the week if ive not had more than a mouch about i like to get a good hard ball something you can throw well and bounces well. Ive always brought pups up with the ball and im sure it helps loads with their ability to catch and if a dogs getting ready for work after an injury you can work it up gently that and road work for the feet does me besides a good game keeps a good bond going with the dog
  12. Had some good scores of sand dunes on the east coast if you can find a patch where the rabbits travel to feed you can bag up not recommended for ferreting though just dogging or longnetting
  13. Hares have a brilliant sense of preservation often lying up where you least expect em to be and where they know they not get bothered any bit of rough or wood or as Ian says dykes especially on fen land will hold hares even if the fields look prime more so if theyve been bothered a lot. I can think of a few places too where they lie close to the nearest houses or farms only travelling at dusk and returning at dawn they dont care for weather as TOMO rightly says look for something thats shielded from the wind you can usually find old puss sat where he is most comfortable
  14. I like a bit of genuine deerhound blood in with the collie mix
  15. Best of luck swamper hope she is o.k
  16. Theyve been here a long time they nest in and around welbeck abbey in the midlands smart looking bird

Best way ive found is get em out when the poults are in and around the pens i work mine to the catapult and air rifle as pups they soon get the idea theres also loads of partridge and woodcock where i lamp and find the pups set em at first when they do this i go to the opposite side of the dog the bird follows the lamp and as soon as its eyes are off the dog it will strike hope this helps

Where do i start canada geese trying to fly off with a dog hanging on its arse in a country park goats, cats, squirrels hedgehogs, voles, mice, owls, chickens, guinea fowl,a peacock one dog i had was a bugger for coming up and dropping baby skylarks and warblers in your hand then you had to try and find the nest to put em back
  21. JD i would keep him inside mate i do this with all my pups anyways to much stress not do him no favours in the long run you have my sympathy mate nothing worse than a howler hope you get it sorted
  22. Where i was a kid your mam sent you off with a bottle of water and a jam sarnie and us lads would bird nest use a catapult and rabbit most days and eat anything we got cooked on a fire. First dog i owned was a smooth fox terrier we would chase a rabbit to ground then let the dog dig it out. saw my first lurcher at eleven yrs old and we all used to take him out as he was a roamer, some good memories buckets full of duck and plovers eggs learnt to snickle and then eventually owning me own jukel in total forty years and still get a kick out of going out did have a break for eight years and got in
  23. Ive found a dog thats working hard will need up to 3x the amount of food that it would get if its only worked once a week quality not quantity every time some dogs have bad conversion rates and will lose weight quickly while others will hold their weight more easily. Even so feed em crap they have to eat a lot more than if you feed em quality and with quality theres less waste and the dog will empty quicker for work
  24. A good buck that snoop pups doing you proud mate looks like youve all had a mudbath cant beat getting mucky
