I was quite surprised a the lack of markings too tbh. If it's a .25 then my top estimate in my first post may be rather low..... James

Varmint or non-varmint that is the question
salukiwhippet replied to AzMaN's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Varmint barrels were developed for centrefires to make firing a lot of 'hot' rounds practical without the POI changing very much. Unnecessary on 22lr (and HMR) IMO, just makes what should be a light handy gun a bloody great hulky thing. Just my opinion, as always James -
I don't know owt about the pistol. The rifle looks like an early Lincoln Jefferies type BSA, there were several models, what calibre is it? Value would be somewhere between £150 and £300 depending on rarity of model and condition. Sorry I can't help more. I know a lot folk on here dislike it, but the vintage forum of www.airgunbbs.com is a mine of info about older guns. James

Well...did my DSC1 with a remy 700, twas nice but v heavy (it was a heavy barreled synthetic jobbie) I've got a mossy shotgun and it's agricultural but does exactly what you need it to, I don't know if the same can be said for their rifles. My shooting buddy has an A-bolt in .243 and it's lovely. He puts norma 58gn Vmax into well under an inch at 100 yards (and he's not the best rifle shot in the world!) The mag system takes some getting used to, but is excellent once you're familiar with it. James

That makes more sense chap! Seriously though, forget the ox spring, they really do make guns shoot rough. 11ft/lb is plenty, but no good if you can't put it in the right place! Now get practicing (and get the pics up!) James

John Knibbs specialises in BSA stuff, including the centrefire and rimfire kit. http://www.airgunspares.com/ Or get your RFD to keep an eye out at auctions etc. James

As has been said, I hope that rifle is on your FAC. If not, it's an illegally held firearm and as such carries a mandatory 5 year prison sentence. I didn't know SMK did anything capable of 18ft/lb? If it's all above board, as I'm sure it is, Happy Birthday and happy shooting! James

It should definitely be rifled! I've got one in .22, and the moderator that came with it was all aluminium, and the hole where the barrel goes into the moddy ended up oval, so I couldn't tighten it down properly. Might be worth trying yours without the moddy before you give money to a gunshop! James

Wilf at Country Pursuits in Cricklade stocks both the CCI CB long and RWS Zlang, my Brno will feed both, the RWS have the edge on accuracy though, about 3/4" at 30 yards. They are both 29grn solids though, so don't know what the ricochet factor would be. Not very near you 6br, but maybe you know someone up this way? James

I would think a nail would be too soft for holding the spring in, you might get away with it if you harden the nail though. If you can find the real thing (or one the same size!) for sensible money, I'd go for it. What diameter is the hole? and how wide is the cylinder? I'll have a look through my various guns and see if any of their pins are likely to fit. As for Ox springs, I wouln't bother. Much better to get a standard spring to fit, the rifle will be sweeter and more accurate for it. HTH, James

Does the mk3m locator pick up mk1 Collars?
salukiwhippet replied to salukiwhippet's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Yeah, I meant if i had to buy a whole new setup, I'd need to get 2 boxes etc. As it turns out, just collars! Happy days! Thanks for all the replies James -
Does the mk3m locator pick up mk1 Collars?
salukiwhippet replied to salukiwhippet's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
That was my thinking AS! I do alot of thick hedgerows with a mate, me one side, him the other, so I like us to have a box each, saves a lot of pushing through blackthorn or chucking boxes over hedges. I'd therefore need 2 boxes, at least 4 collars....soon mounts up!!!! James -
Does the mk3m locator pick up mk1 Collars?
salukiwhippet replied to salukiwhippet's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Cor, that was quick! What's range and accuracy like? Is it just the same as using the mk.1 collar? Really don't want to buy in a whole new setup if I can just add collars! James -
Hi Folks, Looking at getting a mk3m ferret finder, but as I already have a few mk1 collars, I'm keen to know whether the mk.3 reciever will pick them up? I think I read somewhere it does, but I can't find any reference to it now! Thanks in Advance, James

JUST APPLIED FOR MY FAC
salukiwhippet replied to shottyscotty's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
What, no .22lr :icon_eek: As long as you've got the ground you should be OK mate, no guarantees in the licencing game tho! James -
There are two sets of measurements that apply. Section one (FAC) must have a barrel of 300mm and an overall length of 600mm. Shorter would come under 'small firearms' which are essentially section 5 now. Section two (SGC) must have a barrel of 24" and an overall length of 40". Shorter than either becomes section 1. James

information on ferrets in season
salukiwhippet replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I tend to start mine on really easy sets in the late winter of the year they were born, so they're about 10 months. Some will start them earlier and I'm sure that's fine, but I'm in no rush as I have plenty that kow the job already. I tend to start them in empty burrows to get them used to it, then in small (no more than 3-4 holes) sets with an experienced jill. If a jill remains in season for a long time, it can bring on oestrogen induced anaemia, which can be fatal. I don't know how long a jill would stay in for if left to her own devices, I suspect until the autumn. You don't ne -
Hi mate. Exactly what it says on the tin! Springers obviously move when they're fired, and the way in which they move is effected by the way you hold them. My BSA Lightning is very sensitive indeed, If you hold it just resting in your arms, it will do one hole groups at 20 yards, if you hold it tight, the groups open up to 2 inches! Higher powered springers are worse for it, presumably due to the violence of the action. Webley Patriots are supposed to be really sensitive. HTH mate, James

What airgun is it? Trigger mechs vary massively and there's no one answer for all of em! The vast majority of 12ft/lb airguns are designed to run at 12ft/lb and no more, most springers will only go to 15ft/lb tops and most will become very hold sensitive at that. I'm also not sure how he'll come off legally doing the work himself and adding the rifle to his FAC. PCP is the best bet for FAC power. James

I bought a Lee Breechlock challenger kit (about £100), the only bits I had to buy on top were a case length guage and lockstud (calibre specific and about £3), a die set (obviously calibre specific and about £30 cos I like to neck size) and components. The only thing I've added is a kinetic hammer to correct my cock-ups! James
-
Apart from anything else, their use to kill any animal is illegal, they are approved only for collapsing empty systems. James
-
Agreed, it won't be spot on, but at airgun ranges, you'll do well to notice the difference. James

Do you really save money reloading?
salukiwhippet replied to danebrewer10's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I use a single stage press. I tend to leave the press set up with the neck sizing die and when I get in from a session, deprime, size, prep and prime the brass and stick it in a box. When I have a few (20+ cases) ready to go, I do a session at reloading them all at once. Makes it a fair bit quicker and preping cases is boring, so I'd rather do them as I fire them, ie, a few at a time. I shoot .243 and .22 hornet, and yes it is a fair bit cheaper once you have a load that suits your rifle. James -
Trajectory is mostly related to velocity, so assuming the .177 is doing 800fps, the .22 would need to do the same, which is 20.32 ft/lb. HTH, James

I had it slightly wrong. Seems the order is still in place, NE just ain't going to enforce it any more. Sorry Chaps http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Images/ra...t_tcm6-9967.pdf James
