Fenn Tunnels anyone sell them
salukiwhippet replied to heart of wales's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Mk4's not legal for mink chap, mk6 is OK, magnum 116 better! James -
Yep, you'll need a cabinet (and one for the ammo, tho this can be a lockable compartment in the rifle cabinet). You'll also need somewhere to shoot it, and 'good reason' for owning one (rabbit control etc.) There are limitations on young people owning and using rifles, how old are you? James P.S., think hard about the HMR, lots of folk are finding they're not all they're cracked up to be!
-
Any dog with a nose could be useful for marking. Is he steady to ferrets and stock and controllable? If so, try him, but stick to smallish easy buries and/or take a mate so you can concentrate on the dog. James

I thought that, £60 If you download his catalogue, they're £15 each, or 2 for £25 - more like it methinks. I've used them ferreting a couple of times, never thought of using them as Foxy has though. Could work on a rabbit fence too maybe? James

Yep, in a tunnel of course James

Can't be arsed to list all I've had, I'd be here til daylight, but peg guns - now that brings back memories! How I've still got two eyes is beyond me!! James

.22LR or .17HMR For Very Close Range Fox
salukiwhippet replied to Mutimer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
.22 bullets penetrate better on charlie than those little HMR ones. If you must use the HMR, try to get hold of some 20 grain hollowpoints, the terminal ballistics are much better. James -
feeding wild game birds
salukiwhippet replied to ellir0305's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Bit of both mate, game needs 3 things: Habitat - You might not be able to influence that too much as it ain't your own ground. Since they're breeding anyway it sounds like it's not too far wrong. Feed - To have healthy birds come breeding time, and keep them about during the season. Protection from predators - partly a function of habitat, but also acheived by predator control of appropriate species at the right time of year. James -
Can be deadly, even more so off a quad, when I was in Norfolk I shot 175 bunnies in a night off the back of a bike with the headkeeper's berreta semi. They do get wise to it though, best thing to do is hit them really hard when you do go out, but don't go that often. James

Transporting Snares
salukiwhippet replied to Problemchild's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yep, peg through noose and hung from the noose. My rangie's got little hooks on the grab handles in the back, I suspect they're for hanging suits on, but they take about 25 snares each too! Get some funny looks at roundabouts though.... James -
Welcome. I got my last lot through JohnB as well, I've bought a few things from him and always had top service! James

'Fraid not mate! Fenn traps kill instantly, wires tend to hold bunnies alive, depending on how much they pull and whether they get tangled round something. Glass: practice on dead ones, hold the bunny by the back legs, other hand round the back of the neck, tip the head so it's at 90 degrees to the body, and then pull. You'll feel it go. Once mastered, it's much easier than carting an airgun about! James

Red fox survey and the hunting ban
salukiwhippet replied to Pernille Egeberg's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
To answer your comments: First nobody puts their name to this survey, if you fill it in I have no idea who you are the closest I come to knowing this is the part of the country you are from it is completely anonymous. Second several have answered that they use gassing/poisoning as a method of killing, leaving this out of the survey would therefore give the wrong results. I am not trying to judge people who do this or take legal actions I am only trying to give a representation of fox hunting, this may include illegal methods. Gassing is in itself not illegal the problem is finding a poison -
As has been said, .22lr for rabbits, HMR for crows or rabbits at longer range. An HMR is certainly not a 'fox calibre', yes it will kill them, but in my opinion, and that of most others, completely unsuitable past 100 yards absolute maximum. I am currently mentoring a chap for .22 centrefire as he has shot 2 foxes with his HMR, both headshots, both slightly outside the brain, both at under 100 yards, and both needed a second shot to finish them. He has (rightly) given up the HMR for foxing, and is in the process of applying for a suitable calibre. I personally wouldn't touch an HMR,

oxford of gamekeeping?
salukiwhippet replied to ROB.BOB's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I went to Newton Rigg when it was still part of UCLAN, it was very good indeed, superb facilities, and good lecturers. Malcolm Riding can't half shoot a rifle! I don't know how much it's changed since I left, but it's certainly worth considering. Has the lake been built yet? They were planning it when I left, down the bottom of the clay ground. James -
Rabbit Snaring Questions
salukiwhippet replied to glass22's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Where on the runs are you setting them? The loop wants to be over the middle of a small beat. I doubt they're too high, unless most of the bunnies are very small ones. How big are the snare loops? And the silver thing that holds the wire is the 'tealer' James -
fenn trap setting for rabbits
salukiwhippet replied to aaronpigeonplucker's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I place the trap and cover it with the safety on and the trap set coarse, then just expose the latch and the safety, push the plate down as far as I dare, flick the safety off and then cover latch and safety by pushing soil back over them with a stick. You want the trap set fine so as soon as thumper's front feet hit the plate, whack! and you have him round the head/chest. James -
Rabbit Snaring Questions
salukiwhippet replied to glass22's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
What sort of wires are they? Really wet horrible weather will tend to keep rabbits at home more, some will still feed though. 6.5" is a good starting set height, in long grass, especially long wet grass, you will need to lift 'em up. I would expect some pulled snares though if they're in the right place but set too low. Keep at it chap, you'll get there! Maybe a few pics would help us give more specific advise. James -

How do you get a permission when 14?
salukiwhippet replied to othickman's topic in Young Hunters Talk
Have a look here chap: http://pubs.myfunforum.org/index.php and try to find somone near you looking for beaters. Don't expect permission to come along straight away but it's a start. Your age might be an issue, do you have a parent/guardian/older sibling who could go along with you? James -
Fraid not chap: http://www.basc.org.uk//en/departments/gam...ing-seasons.cfm Prohibited Methods of Taking/Killing Wildlife (Including Game) Please note additional legislation applies to deer, further information is available from the BASC Deer Department on 01244 573047 It is illegal to use certain methods for killing or taking wildlife. Of Course, you only use it to attract them and to observe/photograph them, as using an recording to attract birds to shoot is illegal As for the OP, I would give a ladder trap some thought. Are they carrions or rooks? James

fenn or spring traps
salukiwhippet replied to aaronpigeonplucker's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Fenns or springer mk4's mate, they are more expensive than the copies, but will last much longer, not to mention they're legal to use! Should be able to get them for about £6-£7 each, plus postage, so even 3 should be well within budget. Solway mk.4's are ok and a bit cheaper I think, quality's not as good as fenns but they do the job. Remember to get your tunnels right! James -
Once you've got the SGC, you can buy any number of section 2 shotguns up to the number you have storage for. You have to tell the police in writing (recorded delivery is a good idea!) whenever you buy one. Those poacher's .410's still crop up from time to time, they are getting old now and most are showing their age. Have a look at www.guntrader.co.uk. Saddlery and gunroom make moderated .410's, they may be handy for urban areas. HTH, James

Recommendations for a live capture fox trap
salukiwhippet replied to squibbs's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Firstly, are you in a town or country setting? I ask because rural foxes are acknowledged to be very difficult to catch in cages. I haven't used them much as I prefer snaring or shooting where possible, but I have friends who have used them, cubs seem to fall for them, but the adults seem much more wary. You might be better off getting your shotgun ticket if you're rural, if you're urban then a cage is your best bet. Whereabouts in the country are you? James
