Saluki greyhound x bedlington whippet
Deerhunter1 replied to fieldsportsman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I agree with you any breed of lurcher within reason will kill rabbits. What I mean is if you were an out and out rabbit man who didn’t run anything else you wouldn’t have any need for saluki blood -
Saluki greyhound x bedlington whippet
Deerhunter1 replied to fieldsportsman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Would think a saluki x greyhound x beddy x greyhound could be handy, wouldn’t be keen on going to a beddy x whippet though can’t see any positives over the beddy x greyhound unless you were a rabbit man, and if that was the case why would you want any saluki in the dog to begin with -
Front left pad problem ?
Deerhunter1 replied to Whispering Whiskey 66's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
It will heal, but you’re looking at a few weeks rather than days. The joys of running dogs in September -
Most lower cost biscuits are full of rubbish really, just animal waste products that can’t be used for anything in the human food chain. It’s like a person eating processed fast food every day they’re not going to feel very good & it’s the same for a dog
-
I’d drop the biscuit all together & just feed meat, pasta, rice, veg
-
He’s been retired a good while now I think, had a few bits off him about 10 year ago best leather collars I’ve seen by far
-
Doesn’t bother me what it is as long as both parents are doing the job
-
Nice looking dog, without a doubt line bred coursing stuff is the way to go for hares, but for all other quarry I’d rather the just normal saluki lurcher
-
Interesting subject, have to say I agree with Paulus from what I’ve seen myself the bitch has more influence. I’d take a pup out of a good bitch & and average dog, but I wouldn’t take a pup if it was the other way round. That being said I’ve known very few litters where dog & bitch were both fully tested and top of their game
-
I’ve kept dogs too long that weren’t up to scratch but that’s no problem until something better comes along. Trouble is when people start lining bitches with them or knocking litters out
-
Good post, plenty of messers about jumping from one thing to another. Right about the standards thing as well, a man can keep whatever standard of dog he’s happy with there’s nothing wrong with that, but when they start twisting everything to make below average dogs seem top class it just gets a bit daft
-
Just trotting by the bike mate nothing fancy here
-
I’m the same, I don’t require a retrieve from my dogs. All I ask is a basic level of obedience, good recall, good with stock, jump on command. When I comes to fitness though I always make sure my dogs are right where I want them to be before I give them a run, being well prepared can save you a lot of lay offs
-
I’d say he’d be right on both counts, how many lurchers do you see with bad recall, or that aren’t broken to livestock. On the fitness side it’s much the same most dogs just taken out in august on hard ground with no fitness work & owners can’t understand why they’re getting injuries

What to look for when choosing a pup
Deerhunter1 replied to Chaff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Tried all the additives, veg & supplements, dogs still didn’t look as good or performs as well as when they had a mixture of raw meat and carbs as the main part of their diet. The carbs didn’t have to be kibble, the best my dogs looked was on a chicken carcass in the morning, then raw beef, tripe, pasta, mixed veg and a bit of that ultimate oil in the evenings -

Majority of top level greyhounds get fed raw and kibble together if it caused an issue for performance it would’ve flagged up by now. I find my dogs always look & perform better when they have an amount of carbs in their diet, tried the full raw thing couldn’t hold their weight when worked hard -

No can’t say I have to be fair, I think it’s just a lottery picking pups, I’d say one of the biggest factors in how a dog turns out is how much running it gets, the best dogs I’ve seen have had keen owners that would get them out a lot -

With the type I keep I like to pick the one that looks like it’s thrown furthest away from the saluki! Temperament wise I like a nice calm pup, nothing shy or nervous. -
I don’t know anything about the dog, just made a guess he’s probably the next big coursing stud dog, be loads of pups out of him for sale all over Facebook no doubt same as all others
-
Probably caught a few hares, publicised and put to open stud to earn owner some £££, same as all the well known dogs over the years really
-
Beautiful looking bitch, you’ve got her in good condition, how’s she bred?

Think alot of the dogs you see running in to things & writing themselves off are the ones that haven’t been allowed to free run in woods etc as pups. Better for them to have a bump off a tree at 4/5 months when they’re going slow & learn from it than when they’re 18 months and break their neck
-
Nice looker that one

That’s what I was getting at, wouldn’t mind seeing one run because everyone I’ve heard say they wouldn’t have one has never laid eyes on one. Was meant to be a dog out of that breeding in the north east a few years back and more than 1 person saw that do some impressive things. Not sure how true that is though but wouldn’t judge them without seeing one myself
