  1. That’s what I was on about earlier if you read it, home bred saluki grey blood not all this line bred romeo razor bulldozer stuff.
  2. I just call em lurchers I’ve never been one for sitting studying pedigrees, fair bit of saluki x grey blood in there, current bitch has a bit of wheaten x grey in there, bit of all sorts really, not line bred or even close bred just out of decent dogs
  3. I’ve never owned a bull cross mate so I don’t know where you’ve got this from, and I’ve never ran more than 1 dog on a fallow. I’d never try and tell a coursing man or a foxing man about their game I’m not that ignorant but don’t think you can educate me on taking deer with lurchers. I’ve taken all 6 species daytime up and down the country in my time with dogs and from what I’ve seen the line bred coursing stuff doesn’t have the mental grit to do the big uns time and time again, they’ll maybe do a couple to start with but when they start getting knocked about they’ll think twice abou
  4. Seen a few men try em because they were meant to be a level above the home bred saluki greys, like your first crosses and stuff like that. I thought them line bred coursing dogs were different class on hares but as deer dogs or all rounders they couldn’t touch our home bred stuff. It’s hard to explain but they just didn’t seem to have the same grit when it wasn’t going their way, they’d hammer roe all day with a smile on their faces but when they got knocked about by something bigger they’d start hanging back and letting stuff get away. Noticed they took a lot more managing as well, used to bl
  5. If this is the sort of stuff getting said in the fox debate I can’t wait till the deer one starts ?
  6. I’m no fox man so I couldn’t tell you what men are doing mate, I’ve just seen the punishment they can dish out and it takes a brave dog to keep going back for more night after night
  7. A proper fox dog deserves the upmost respect, it’s not an easy game for a dog when it’s asked to do it over and over again
  8. Don’t get me wrong mate I’ve had my fair share of failures, I’ve found the real good uns only come along every now and again. But the best I’ve had was out of a saluki x grey to a rough lurcher with a few breeds in there, greyhound, saluki, wheaten etc. I’ve seen good uns of different types but most important thing to me was both parents being well versed on deer & having a good technique, those ones that grab the back end and hang on for dear life never make it in my book
  9. You can choose to believe me or not I really don’t mind but hand on heart a red stag is the only one I’d double on pre ban. The rest were single or not at all, if the dog can’t do it single they deserve to get away in my book.
  10. I’m a lurcher man myself but I’d put working terriers, foxing lurchers & big deer dogs over coursing dogs in terms of putting themselves under strain physically & mentally. A terrier goes face first in to the pitch black and confronts a fox in its own arena, puts itself at risk of serious injury or death every time it goes to ground, to compare a dog that chases a big rabbit round a field to a working terrier is ridiculous. Same with fox & big deer dogs, they’re giving their all to catch something they know is going to hurt them when they get hold of it, when a coursing d
  11. Bad that if it’s true nothing worse than a messer
  12. Too much saluki for you tip toe round puddles so they don’t get their feet wet ?
  13. You’ve dodged a bullet then with that the ones I saw had awful mouths wouldn’t pick up until it had been ran to exhaustion, and had shocking feet always busting them up
  14. I heard years ago that caulfields joe wouldn’t run if it were raining ?
  15. How do you find them romeo dogs? Couple of my pals tried stuff from that dog & didn’t have much success with them
  16. If we’ve learned anything from the line breeding thread, putting nero in 3 times would give you more chance of getting another nero, is that something you’d want?
  17. Bottom line mate you can ask these sort of questions till the cows come home, there’s no secret formula, lads just do what they fancy and hope for the best. If you want a good killer of any kind you need to get out in the fields and run it as often as you can, some make it some don’t but we have a lot of fun trying so don’t stress too much about pedigrees & breedings just pick a dog and enjoy it
  18. On a serious note mate I know lads that have done it just because they like Salukis, like the way they look & how they act, don’t ask me why but they do, can be as straight forward as that
  19. Time spent on a phone has no baring on how much hunting a man does don’t talk stupid
  20. Because they’re sick of catching things ?
  21. That’s what I’ve seen men go on about testing dogs & how they’d never keep a jacker, then it does it in front of their eyes and they act like the ain’t seen it, or make up an injury and forget about it
  22. Well if you breed your own at least you know the history of the bitch, and if you’re sensible you’ll have seen the stud dog run, which is more than you’ll know if you buy a pup in from someone else
  23. All this talk of culling hard, most men I met that talk that way are more likely to breed from a jacker than cull it when you get to know them
