Spot on if you’re just doing a bit of mooching, rabbiting etc an obedient dog that can catch the odd thing here & there is all you need. Easy for a lot to get carried away and think they need a specialist dog when they don’t. Best of luck if you do decide to go for one & would be nice to hear how it turns out.
Never seen one of these run they don’t look badly put together dogs though, would be interesting to see someone honest have a go with one and hear what they’re really like
Reckon they’d be too slow for anything bigger than rabbits? Shame that really as they look like they could take a few knocks but suppose no point adding stuff that’s lacking speed to run fast quarry
No I don’t imagine they would be but I didn’t know we were talking about seasoned deer dogs I thought it was just about lurchers in general, if a dogs seasoned on the bigger deer species a goat isn’t going to give it much of an issue. That being said if you’ve got a seasoned big deer dog & you’re running in that terrain I’d much rather go look for a herd of reds than a group of stinking goats
No but I’d say a big Billy goat would put up more of a challenge for a lurcher than some of those that I mentioned that was my point. I’ve had wallabies myself not many but a few, they’re easy pickings for a dog but something different
Same could be said for other quarry species. Rabbits, mountain hares, wallabies, muntjac to name a few. None of which present much of a challenge for a lurcher but all part of the experiences of travelling & trying new things
The cut on the pad has severed the ligament in that toe, can’t do anything for it now they need stitches straight away if you're going to go down that road but I’ve seen a few dogs with that exact injury run the same as they did before and it’s never bothered them. Don’t waste your time at the vets nothing can be done for it just run the dog as normal he won’t even notice it. Keep the nail short on that toe though.
So you lads don’t think working dogs need broken to livestock? Things must have changed from when I started with dogs then because any working dog that wasn’t sound round sheep was always seen as a liability. I’ll stick to my stupid ways of putting a bit of time in and actually training a dog.
You reckon if that greyhound was let off the lead in a field full of sheep it wouldn’t have attacked one? Price and breeding doesn’t come in to it, if a persons had a pup with the intention of working it and they’ve not broke it to stock then they’ve not done right by the dog whatever way you spin it
Was a greyhound for sale on here recently & the lad said he hadn’t broke it to sheep don’t remember him getting any stick over it, bit of double standards
Good post, it’s same with terriers and coursing dogs men act like the dogs are only put to top class tested bitches, then you find out down the line they’ve been put to all sorts of shit to earn the owner a few quid
