Four years ago, I joined a local shoot as a beater. Not knowing much at all about shooting, I was interested in how the guns knew where to stand. Obviously, there were peg markers, but how did the guns know which peg to stand on? It was all down to drawing a number. However, most of the guns got confused and forgot their numbers. Before each drive, we would have the situation where Shoot Captain and Keeper would have to position the guns on the right pegs.
