  1. There is a thread on the first page asking 5's or 6's for pigeon? This is up to 55 replies now, why not have a read. Regarding 7's, some people do use them, but personally I use nothing smaller than 6's. Remember, depending on the country of origin, shot sizes can be less than the English ones. You could be unknowingly using 8's or something.
  2. Well said Kay!! Love the new hair colour too!
  3. My collie had a train chasing problem when she was a pup. Once she was at top speed she was also "deaf". On one of our regular walks, we pass close to three separate railway lines, so lots of chasing potential. What I did, was to simply be listening out for trains. As soon as I heard one in the distance, I called her in and put the lead on. This was easy enough as she only reacted as they passed, and she could see them. While the train passed, I would give her treats to keep her attention on me. That's about all really, just gave it enough time with the lead and treat method. Trains can pass
  4. We have a little starting pistol, it only fires 6mm short blanks. We fire it initially from the next field, so it's only a small "crack". Don't look towards the noise, just ignore it and be training or playing somehow with the dog. Build up slowly over a few days, until the gun gets to about 30 feet away. Try to keep the dog's attention on you, and use treats too if you want. We always start in a small way, though really most gundogs react favorably to gunfire. If you have a local clay shoot, it's useful to park up on the drive or far corner of the car park. Keep the windows shut for a while,
  5. Well obviously you have to wash anything you can of the soiled bedding. Anything you can't wash or remove from the car, should respond to "Febreeze", I think that's the spelling. Works a treat on "sicky" car seats etc. Good post from Hannah, we always spend a lot of car training time with pups, so that we can minimize the sort of thing Trappa is getting just now.
  6. You just popped in? Well take your coat off if you are stopping. Welcome to THL. What particularly are you interested in Taity?
  7. Hello John, welcome to THL. Plenty of stuff on here to interest you, and help if you need it.
  8. I don't think anyone can give a good answer to this. Ducks can be friendly or miserable beggars, they vary like people. Assuming you have bought some ducklings, or are going to, what about splitting your pen or making a wire cage for them. The ducklings can then be safely put with the adults (haven't you only one left?) and you can observe behavior. If all seems ok then let them mingle freely. Good luck.
  9. Most "creosote" sold these days is, as the stig says, only a substitute. I have seen a oil company called Smith and Allan on e-bay who advertise the real stuff, based on coal-tar. Think it's in 20 or 25 litre drums. Don't know anyone else doing it at the mo. Have a look in the car spares section, look for oils and you will probably find their shop. Or try smithandallan.com
  10. Pups are just like babies, in that they don't have much control while very young. They often need, in early days, to go out maybe three times during the night. During the daytime, they often need to go hourly, and certainly, as lawrence said, after eating and as soon as they wake up. They should be ok overnight, say 10.00 pm to 6.00 am by about three months old. To do right by pups, you have to be prepared for some disturbed sleep in the beginning. We always keep pups in indoor cages at night, and they also use them for daytime naps too.
  11. Don't waste your time mailing gun companies. They will only give "freebies" to established winners like Richard Foulds (Beretta) and George Digweed (Perazzi). There are plenty of guns about for less than £100, you may even get a double barrel for £50. If you can't afford that, and the cartridges to feed it, then you will just have to be patient until you can.
  12. When she is stretched out on the car seat, you can just see her ribs.In the standing shot, you can't. I would say she is fine as she is. I have heard of quite a few folks with running dogs, being told "it's too thin". Just keep on doing what you are doing.
  13. Hope your insurance will cover it mate. If not, there are quite a few firms who can plastic weld bumpers and repaint them, much cheaper than a replacement job. Have a look in your yellow pages for contacts. Unfortunately, you will be liable, so best to keep the bloke sweet and pay up. Just shop around and try to save a bit. Just be glad the dog is ok.
  14. Whether the jelly for nail strength actually works, I don't know, but my first wife used to eat a cube of Chivers jelly everyday. I kid ye not.
  15. What is a corvid mate?. Birds of the family Corvidae, crows, rooks etc.
  16. Nice pictures Kay, you seem to have an artistic eye and good observation. Didn't you already dye your hair the same colour as the leaf once?
  17. Hello Pete, welcome to THL. Good luck with finding work in gamekeeping.
  18. As it will be used to sleeping close to it's litter brothers, a good idea would be a warm hot water bottle, wrapped in a towel. If it has a source of warmth for comfort, it may be less liable to howl when on it's own. Also, the actual bedding should be clear of the floor.
  19. Probably the best auction house for guns is Holts. Although they are always looking for guns with history and provenance, there are some cheapies too. Their HQ is at Sandringham, but they hold auctions around the country, usually at military places for security. You can check catalogues on line at www.holtandcompany.co.uk. There are valuation days held at various venues around the country. Just come across a auction near you. Wallis and Wallis West st Auction gallery Lewes East Sussex 01273-480208
  20. Don't know if Jeyes is still the same, but it used to contain phenol which can be absorbed through skin or paws. Highly toxic!
  21. This is a "how long is a piece of string" question really. It can vary from a couple of weeks to about three months, going on what I have read. Also, the firearms licensing dept. is usually very small, and one girl having a week off, or the FEO himself can cause delay. There is absolutely nothing to stop you giving your license office a call, to check progress
  22. If you have a local clay ground that gives lessons, why not have a visit there. If you are just setting out, they might be able to let you try an assortment of guns to help you decide. You will also, at least learn about the principles of lead etc. Personally, I would go for a 12 bore over / under, but you will decide for yourself. Don't be too hasty.
  23. Deker is absolutely right. You seem to get the odd "cracker" in a box of .22lr, no matter who made them. I use CCI quite a lot, and yes, the odd "cracker" in the pack. I have also had loud ones from Winchester, Eley, Remington, Magtech etc. It's not so bad out in the field, but I suppose it spoils a good card for you, if it happens when shooting for a group on a target. These things are turned out by the million on a machine, so I expect the odd faulty one is not bad.
  24. Some nice shots there Kay. I particularly like the moss / lichen stuff on the stump. The thing you don't know is, I am pretty sure, a sweet chestnut. Or a dead hedgehog ! ;
  25. I had a few, (30 ish) Remington shorts given to me by a chap having a clear out. I found they fed quite reasonably through my CZ mag. Just used them on some targets, found them to group nicely.
