  1. Hello Brownbear,Welcome to the site from another newbie. Only just joined myself, some nice folks on here.
  2. There is nothing so satisfying as working in the field with a dog you have trained yourself.Whatever the breed, you have a far superior rapport with one you have known from puppyhood. There is plenty of help in the midlands, you can join clubs or go for one to one tuition. Only buy a ready trained dog, if you really cannot fit in training one (with professional help) yourself.
  3. There is some good advice in these posts Simpson. You are going to have to be very patient though. You have said she gets scared whenever you try to take her out shooting. This makes me think she has had too much too soon regarding gunfire. It is not a good test for gunshyness,to loose off a 12 bore over a novice/puppy's head. Our girls start by hearing a 6mm blank from the next field, then gradually getting closer. Each shot is followed by treats and fuss. Please take your time, read the good advice and put it into practice, all may not be lost yet. Good luck.
  4. Greedy pelican, couldn't quite see for the "newsflash"panel, but it looked like a feral pigeon down in one. Didn't like the COW one much, that chick was on a string, bit sick.
  5. Well, thanks for the comments so far gents. The rifle, whatever I get, will be used for rabbits mainly. I will be helping to control numbers on a nearby airfield. I expect to be shooting 25 to 100 yard ranges, because as you will appreciate,it's fairly flat, open ground and you have to keep to the fringes for any cover.
  6. Sure is youngbuck. As with all shotguns, you have to put the shot in the right bit of air for it to work. Don't try for too distant a shot, there is a lot less lead fired than a 12 bore. My .410 is a tightly choked O/U,and will take 3" shells. The longest shot I have taken was a (successful) 40 yard rabbit.I would probably use 2" or 2 1/2" for pheasant with #6 shot.
  7. Well done Sounder, you are making the most of a few days off work.Hey! No one is jealous though, certainly not me! B*****r,b*****r,b****r!!!
  8. Hi Stabs, thanks for the quick reply. You will appreciate I know nothing about hunting in Australia, other than that seen in "Crocodile Dundee"! You probably have a vast area to shoot over, and I have read that dingoes are a menace in some area's. If you shoot on sight, then you can do no more really. (Bet one of them goats would be tasty though).
  9. Hopefully,my coterminous shotgun/FAC license will be here soon. I will then be in the market for a .22. Collecting my shotgun from repair,I spotted a Walther G22 on the gunsmith's rack. It looked attractive to me,but I don't know anyone who has one. I have googled a few articles, and apart from a poor feel to the trigger on early ones, caused by the operating rod needed due to the "bullpup" design, and some failures to cycle with certain ammo,I have found nothing bad about it.Has anyone on here got any experience with one? Comments good or bad appreciated. As I was in a rush (as usual),I didn'
  10. Lantana? Is this some sort of Aussie plant/scrub that the wild goats are keeping down? If the dingoes are taking the goat kids, can't you go and take a few dingoes?I don't expect you can eat a dingo, but another dingo might, then it would leave the kids for a while perhaps?
  11. County Clare, thanks for that Sounder. I have more idea where you are now. Neighbours from across the street toured the west of Ireland including Clare last month. They had a great time, loved the scenery, people, relaxed lifestyle and everything. Probably quite a good amount of shooting,I would imagine. Not a heavily populated area?
  12. Paulus,is that Ibstock Liecestershire? That seems a very good price to me. I was told £3 a box or £30 ish for 500 Eley last week at our local gunshop. I am hopefully going to get a .22 rifle soon, when my license turns up.My shotgun ticket is expiring, and I have applied for a coterminous licence,so I can have a rifle and a shotgun. At that price,it would be economical to nip to Ibstock.
  13. I'm with you auto culto, not sporting at all. That film clip would get the anti brigade wound up.
  14. Looks like you had a good day out Sounder, seems a peaceful place. Great to see a gundog at work. You could add a rough location, because a lot of people on here will not be familiar with your area,or Ireland at all come to that. It's a place I never seem to have got round to visiting yet.
  15. Hello everyone,Just found this site,so joined up as it looks interesting. Glad to see the no txt rule,as I detest reading it on other forums I go on. I have been shooting for years, but mostly clays these days at a small informal club. It's a fine way to spend Sunday morning, make a bit of noise, smash a few things etc. My license is expiring this month,so decided to apply for a coterminous shotgun/firearm one this time.Just had my visit and installed a new gun-cab with ammo locker on Wednesday. I will get a .22 rimfire to help out a friend with a rabbit problem. We have a horde of flatcoated re
