Disposing of rim fire misfires
Geoff.C replied to mangy1983's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You could take a pair of pliers and pull the bullet out. It is quite easy with a .22, and you can dispose of the components in the bin. Personally though, if I have the odd misfire, I just push the duff bullet into the ground under a hedge. If nowhere near a footpath, who will ever find it? -
I can't just put my hands on the magazine, but I have an article somewhere that tells about the Rizzini family, having several different small gun factories. As far as I can remember, the "E" Rizzini, tends to be cheap and cheerful, while the "B" is a bit more upmarket. The E and B etc are the initials of the brothers etc Christian names.

At a charity clay shoot, where the entry included cartridges, I was given 3 boxes of the Saga brand. I thought they were reasonably easy shooting, comparing well to my own Express HV. Never had any problems with them.

Tick pickers are best, or tweezers with cranked ends so you don't touch / squash the tick's abdomen. Whatever you do, ensure the tick is not squashed, or it will inject tainted blood back into your dog. Best to leave them on until you have the right tackle for removal, and maybe have someone who knows, demonstrate how to ensure complete removal. After removal, chuck them in a tin of water, or as I do, bash them with a hammer!

11 days from Tick removal - Long Tail Tit
Geoff.C replied to Tis TM's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Glad to see it turned out ok in the end. That eye looks just fine. Hope you get to see some young LTT's later on. I wish we had some around a bit more, if you just happen to be looking from the kitchen, you sometimes see 3 or 4 hit the feeders then gone again in a few seconds. -
I can remember quite clearly as a young lad, my grandad always used to keep a few pigs. About once a week, he used to give them half a shovel of small coal. I can still see the black saliva dripping, as they crunched it up with great enthusiasm.

You can get a cammo nylon one from target sports for a fiver. These are things you can buy at any gunshop, at hugely varying prices, depending whether it's got leather loops on a leather belt,or a leather loop on webbing type, open loops, closed loops etc. If you want to go along to H & H or Purdey's, you will get a best leather for maybe $150 (pound sign broken). Mine is a webbing belt with leather loops, it had only 20, but I got a leather smith to put 4 more each end. I only use it when rough shooting, full of 6's and a few heavy cartridges at one end. It wasn't expensive, and looks much

I've never heard moorhens called a pest before. They are mostly rather solitary and territorial. On a canal walk, you only see one or two every half mile or so. There is a pair on a pond on my permission, no problem at all. What problems is this farmer having?

The shootinguk website has a section to help you find a shooting ground locally.

What an afternoon! Long Tail Tit update...

I think you can be proud of yourself TM. A great job, you have improved the LTT's life no end. I hope you reward yourself with an Easter egg!! -
Horrible things are ticks. Going on the size of it now, it would get to about twice that before letting go on a dog. Hopefully, it will let go the bird before much longer. It often depends how good is the blood circulation to the spot it gets on.

That's the same as we are paying, if we buy shells through the local clay club. Only have a choice of Express "English Sporter" in 71/2 or D&J's. The local gun shops are around 38 pounds for Eley First. The price rises quickly if you want anything faster, like VIP's or Blues etc.

When clayshooting, I have a Browning carrier that holds 4 boxes of 25. Also has a pocket each side for chokes, tools ear plugs etc. When rabbiting on land where a .22 is not permitted, I seem to alternate between a bag and a belt. Rarely carry more than about 30 No 6's and maybe 4 No 1's.

You can get battery powered sonic cat deterrent devices. These are advertised in a lot of the shooting sports magazines, also gardening and bird mags. Try www.conceptresearch.co.uk for a start. These really do work according to the ads. I have experience with a mouse device, this is placed in a shed, previously full of mice. We have not had one in a trap since installing the sonic. I would definitely have a "Catwatch" in the garden, if we had a problem like you. As only the odd cat passes through, because of the dogs I suppose, there is no need. Got to be cheaper than getting in trouble with y

.22LR supersonic or "stinger"
Geoff.C replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I use Winchester subs in my CZ style carbine. It is zeroed at 55-ish yards, and produces a nice group. If I aim at a target on A4 paper at 100 yds, and make no adjustment, simply aim at the bull, the shots fall about a foot low. Using a variety of higher power stuff, Lazer seems the best, but the shots are still about 6 inches low. I guess it is a characteristic of the short barrel? Anyway, I probably won't bother with any more high power as there is little advantage. -
It appears the PNC does give the inquiring officers basic license details. My son was pulled over for marginally exceeding a 50 limit. He heard the one in the car call his mate, and say my lad's name, and then "Oh, and he has a shot gun certificate". Luckily, he was not carrying a gun anyway, and got off with a mild bollocking, so a good result!

I have never used more than 1/4 choke for roosting. When 32 grm was the "normal" load, I used those, but these days, never more than 28 grm of No6.

I wondered about that statement too hily. He must have some strange rough shooting friends perhaps? Can't imagine anyone I know, even thinking of shooting at thrushes. There is usually two, sitting on my bird feeder every morning, waiting for sultanas! We are too short of song birds to go shooting them.

You don't say if you want to try competitions with shotgun or airgun, or both? If you have a powerful airgun, for hunting, you could have a go at field target comps, they are ok for that. There are classes for springers and pcp types. Various venues advertise in the airgun magazines. Target shooting is mostly over a 10 meter range, and indoors, but you need a specialist rifle for this. I used to do air pistol target, I gave up when the local club lost it's premises. There are lots of "grass roots" type of clay shoots, look on the cpsa website for one near wherever you are. I go to one locall

If you go on to www.millersoils.com and click on the WHICH oil? button, you can put in your car details. (You need the year.) This will give you the recommended oil. If Millers is not available where you are, just use the specification they give, to buy an equivalent.

I am fairly sure that VW have not made a 4x4 version of the Caddy. Mechanically, it is just like a golf, so reliability and reasonable economy are assured really. The Skoda version was much the same, but "tarted up" a bit, with yellow interior, even the steering wheel. Not many of these about though.

The shot on the outside of the column is prone to deformation anyway. You must have real bad pitting, if you think it might abraid the shot as it passes through. Still, if your gunsmith says it's ok, then why not just pattern it, using some old wallpaper over a pallet or something. Being a .410 the spread is not too large for the wallpaper method.

I think the military have used shotguns for many years in certain situations. It may have started in the 50's when there was trouble in Malaya. I have read that the leading man in a jungle patrol, was regularly equipped with a open choked,Browning auto.

I think No5 is a coal tit? It's a bit of an odd angle isn't it? Love the posse of long tailed tits! Has someone been shooting those bird feeders, they are well battered!
