  1. Picardy, was the kennel name chosen by a chap named Baldwin. This was a famous kennel for producing German Shepherd Dogs, and started out about 1920. They continued through the 1940's and I have seen them mentioned in the very early 1960's, but think they stopped about then. My "career" with the GSD started about 1971 to the mid 1980's, I have not shown one since then. I am fairly certain that the only Picardy dogs I have seen, were book pictures. They were typically, the old English "type" of dog, very tall, long legged and lacking depth of body compared to a modern dog. The Picardy dogs are
  2. I have always used snap-caps in mu O/U guns. There is a school of thought though, which says you don't need them. The basic idea is that the springs for the firing pins, will tolerate long periods under tension. If you let them off with snap caps, you then simply place the ejector coil springs under tension, which gradually weakens them and reduces eject power. Whatever you do, something is released and something is under tension. Seems to be down to personal choice I suppose?
  3. Yes, much better than the "bigfoot". A real "brown trousers" moment.
  4. My favorite Chinese dish is Singapore chow mien, it's nice and spicy. If my lad has ribs,I put a bit of his souce on it too. For afters I like that traditional Chinese dish, "Banana fritter"!!
  5. Good luck Radders, hope you soon get sorted with your SGC. When you are equipped and shooting clays etc. I know you are taking your dad for a blast. For information,I was reading this morning in the new "Pull" magazine (CPSA), about the Oxford Gun Company. They are based at Oakley, Bucks. www.oxfordguncompany.co.uk 01884 238 308 Doug Florent who instructs there, has taught arthritics, wheelchair shooters and one armed people. So if your dad does decide he wants to do a bit more than have a go occasionally, you could do worse than have a day out at the OGC.
  6. Really nice photo's Dox. Not sure that I have actually ever seen a Reed Bunting? You always seem to be in the right place and have a camera ready.
  7. 83% with a too quick 16 for driving a car!" Dohhhhhh!! BTW, question 12 just says "What percentage of the population in Wales". I had a guess at 7% but the right answer is 5%? Ok, so what do 5% of the population of Wales do??
  8. Nice find Sean, you can have a wallow in nostalgia, it's harmless!! I used to have Airgun world too, but they have all gone apart from a couple of the "specials" they published like "Airguns on test".
  9. It's very worrying when your teens and early 20's kids go into town, as you say coney, kids are getting stabbed for the most trivial reasons. Some clubs/pubs are starting to use metal detectors on the door, so all customers can be checked for weapons. Bugger it, I've carried a knife since I was in short pants, there is one in every outdoor coat, but I have never used one on a human. The people who post on here, probably mostly carry a knife, they are a tool to us not a deadly weapon. There is a really sick and almost sub-human element growing in most towns. Until we can instill respect for th
  10. Radders, believe it or not, quite a few people play golf with one arm. I think there is even a one armed golfers club or society or something? As for clay shooting, this can also be done with one arm. If you get yourself a gun, let your dad have a feel and see if he can control it. If he's ok, you can load for him and let him have a blast. I believe regular one arm shooters, have self opening guns. They hold the butt to their body with the upper arm, then work the top lever by bending the arm up. The gun opens itself and ejects the empties. Cartridges are loaded from a top pocket, and off the
  11. Lovely pictures byron. I don't seem to have seen many butterflies about yet. Perhaps I just haven't been to the right places?
  12. Excellent choice. As a new and young? driver, you may be shocked at the insurance costs on these type of vehicles though. You would need to shop around a lot. The Vitara has been around for a good while and proved very rugged and reliable. There is plenty of 2nd hand spares about should you need them. Remember though, the youngest of the "old" Vitaras are going on for 10 years old. Mechanically long lived, some of them suffer dreadfully with rust, you must check sills, rear floor, rear wheel arches (5 door partic) etc for rust. There are some really solid old ones about and some rusty newer ones.
  13. Thanks for those kind words John. I'll drink your health tonight with my own water!!
  14. I think it's all down to personal choice. I have always used .177, so that's my choice. For a very short time, I had a .22 Webley Vulcan, must be 20 years ago now. I used it for a short while then moved it on.
  15. Don't know what was said originally FT, but it seems that your request to quote in full or face legal actions has them stopped in their tracks. All that is left to do, is hurl a bit of verbal abuse before getting back under their stone!!
  16. Ditch, I too tend to think the robin nesting in a teapot is unlikely these days. As I said, it's had no takers for 15 years now! My nest boxes are all "tit" type, perhaps i should try a open front one. I also like the paint tin idea from Tis TM, I have a very ivy covered ash where one could go.
  17. Great close-up byron. These look like they are covered in green lichen, super cammo.
  18. Nice story Ditch and great nest picture. We have robins about all the time, but have never spotted a nest. About 15 years ago, i hung an old brown teapot in the hedge, spout down for drainage. Having seen pics of robins nested in such things, and having dropped the teapot lid, I thought it could be useful outside! We have about 40 yards of mixed hedging round the bottom of the garden, and though I have at odd times moved the teapot to a different spot, there has never been anything other than spiders in it. We don't look at it enough to disturb any nesting attempts, indeed it's only writing th
  19. A lot of the top Lab people will not give house room to a chocolate. There is I think something in their genes which makes them a little different. I just regard them like Flatcoats, perfectly capable of being a really good dog, but prone to acting up a bit. The type of owner/trainer who is embarrassed when the dog messes about, sticks to blacks and yellows. If you are like me and have a sense of humour, then take on a choc. When picking up on a local shoot, my wife is often asked "is that the dog you worked last week"? This is because of the way they work really well one week, and the next
  20. Ian, standard Vitara wheels are 15". Deputydog, you are too far away even for free wheels. If no one on here has them, try suzuki4u, it's an owners forum etc. I'm sure someone off there will relieve you of them. Generous of you.
  21. I am about halfway through a batch of 500 CCI .22LR. My pal I shoot with said he had found them to be a bit inconsistent, and so they are. Mostly they shoot where I aim, but some go quite wildly off. I knocked a hole in a horses drinking tub, which was fully 3 feet left of where I aimed. I would have thought I had shot over the top though, if I hadn't seen the water splash! Half way through one box of 100, I had about 10 which would not chamber through distortion of the bullet. The next box has been fine up to now, but I am going to take my pal's advice and source some Eley next time. Any that
  22. Sounds a bit suspicious to me. I would have thought an otter would kill something then eat it?? I only know what I have read of otter behaviour, of course, but various fowl with broken necks does not sound "otter-ish" to me. They would kill with a "chomp" I would have thought? Although foxes will kill all they can, if they get amongst chickens say, this does not seem foxy either. Poachers who got disturbed is my best guess. There could have been a otter at the fish though?

Talking about hiding with the speed camera. Someone who thought it unfair, bubbled the Derbyshire force for using an old van. It's been resprayed dark blue, although still registered as white. There is paint and cement crud on the back bumper, so it's just an old builder's van aint it? The north wales police, (Chief Constable hates bikes) have a Discovery and horse box combination which they park up at likely tax collecting points. The camera is in the 'oss box!! These have been pictured at work in "Motor Cycle news"
  24. Well said His Wife, (nice t*ts on the avatar btw) I always take a bag with me when I go for a dog walk. I pick up cans and bottles from dickheads outdoor parties. Apart from making the parkland tidier, it hopefully reduces my chances of having to get glass or slashed tin out of the dog's feet after the mowers have run over it!!
  25. Me too, I always feel a bit guilty when it's only a titch in the sights, but they will grow into big 'uns if you don't shoot.
