  1. If you want to advertise, do it properly or not at all
  2. Moles have travelling runs to get from A to B and feeding runs that they patrol for earthworms. Main (or travelling) runs go from their nest (sometimes more than one nest) and the feeding areas. They also go between feeding areas, and between territories. Personally, I think the best runs to trap are the ones that go between territories Feeding areas are usually easy to spot; they are groups of molehills tightly together. Travelling runs are often (but not always found around the outside of a field, often coming from a hedge or wall or even a fence and going towards the feeding
  3. Stand by your beds I've had a reply from Flat Pack via e-mail..... I'll report back to you all later this week, but I suspect we may have made some progress
  4. I can only go on my own experience, which is that despite the constant abuse mine has had it's still going strong after 5 years In fact, I bought a replacement shaft down here last year, just in case it went on me, but it's still going strong I may buy another one as a 'spare', as I don't know how I'd manage with a proper (grown up ) spade if anything happened to mine
  5. You're a tight arse Darcy Personally, I'd pay a bit more for something that was actually fit for purpose I've just paid £8.50 for Talpex that can only catch one mole at a time
  6. You could try DB Springs I did hear on the grapevine that the reason FP got into mole traps was that they made a load of springs for BR at one point and it developed out of that I know there is no love lost between the two companies
  7. What's 'expensive'? I'm happy to pay a premium for a decent trap that doesn't need 15 minutes fettling, and lasts a good few years Mr Wasp or Nicepix will be happy to confirm, I'm sure, but I think the length of the trap body is about the only thing that hasn't changed By the way PK, I wish you'd download a spellchecker Being the spelling fairy on here is wearing me out
  8. Good on you for trying IWM Your mate doesn't work for BR by any chance?
  9. Go on PK, just admit it............ It's the Fenn!
  10. That's interesting Nicepix To be fair, I've never actually seen one of the stainless versions up close and personal; as I posted earlier, the problems I had with my original batch of Flatpacks put me off ordering any more I'd ask, nay beg, anyone reading this with an interest in the subject to get hold of Flatpack ASAP and ask them to read what's been written here Here's a link to their contact page
  11. I had an original Fenn double loop many, many years ago. I don't know what the hell happened to it; it's probably rusting away underground somewhere. I do have a modern copy of the single catch version; I've never got round to actually trying it out, but will do at some point. It's different; very different I didn't know that Springer made a trap? Do you have any pictures OTC? I'd love to see one
  12. Bloody show off It took me 35 years to catch one Every one counts I hope you charged for them
  13. Many know that for a long time I was a fan of the Bethel Rhodes version. It wasn't perfect, but it was tunable, and of a decent quality Then Flatpack came on the scene, and I bought a few to try. Initially, they seemed very good; minimal tuning needed, and not too wide. The flaw became noticeable after about six months when the bodies started corroding badly I got over that problem by treating them all with Speedip. At the time, I had about 120 FP traps that all got regular and hard work. The dip finish seemed to suit them, and they are still in use today, which is at lea
  14. I squeeze mine to 60mm but I've found that it can affect the speed of action due to the friction on the barrel from the catching loops I just had a look at the Flatpack site (and sent them a message to read this), and it seems that all of their barrels are now stainless The very first batch of their traps I bought (about 8 years ago) rusted in no time at all they weren't interested, so I' haven't bought any since, although I understand they sorted out their 'finish' issues As Mr Wasp says, the other startling difference twixt old and new is the quality and thickness of the
  15. That film about Utting was one of the worst I've ever seen He spends the majority of it telling you about all the jobs he's been sacked from! Truly appalling
  16. That's the first time for ages that anyone has wanted to poke me Anyway, I'd like to thank Nicepix for such an informative and well laid out post I only wish I could agree with you Sadly, I'm strongly of the belief that the original traps have not been copied correctly. Every single change that's been made to them has been to improve the manufacturing process, not the trap It's always the same; because the people that make them don't actually use them, they don't understand the importance of certain factors The beauty of the original was that it was made by a molecatcher
  17. I've often found that managing customer expectations is much harder than managing pests
  18. Are you talking about the fenn mole trap? Good little traps they are
  19. Yes, did a couple of hundred acres I faced snow, hail, thunder, lightening and good old fashioned rain.... but I still went out and had a go I'm still behind; and the weather for the rest of this week looks shite; but at least I'm covering the ground It's a romantic life ya know
  20. I've a feeling that the half barrels that Ratbait sell are actually Proctors I'm happy to be proved wrong; but Proctors would be at the bottom of my 'must buy' list.......
  21. This (link) is what I use It's lasted me five years on the original shaft and I've not worn it out yet It's got a short handle, which is ideal for my trap setting style, which is usually from the knees (ooh, ar missus). I noticed Millet gave a link (Here) somewhere else for a fairly useful looking tool I'd avoid anything 'folding' like the plague. Mole trapping is a ruffntumble kind of occupation and my tools get a fair bit of abuse
  22. I had a couple of foul catches with the Talpas. I think the main difference between them and the genuine article is the spring power The only modification that I can see that might be desirable is a slight bend in the trigger You lads that want to penny pinch carry on I charge enough to ensure that I can buy good quality kit that lasts. In fact, I think that most of my traps will still be working when I'm buried
  23. Mate, we all get blockers from time to time usually I pick the little blighter up in a different trap, but it's nice to have an alternative Yes, the jaws on these traps are quite widely spaced, so in theory, they'll be hidden within the walls of the tunnel. Talpex work in a different way to normal scissor type traps; the mole isn't pushing forward to trigger the trap, but upwards. That's why the lend themselves to backfilling so well The spring power on these traps is simply awesome, plenty strong enough to power through the backfilled soil and catch the intended victim As Mr W
