Yep I agree , the UK is screwed, whether a trucker with nowhere to stop , or British guys having to compete with Eastern European prices , if I were working away now I'd say accomodation is ridiculous, some hotels have illegals in also busy expensive time ATM but some of the best paid jobs in my game become mediocre once the digs come out of it. If you can find anywhere in the first place in august lol. Some of the foreign guys will happily sleep in the back of a van , it's not for me though , it just continues the race to the bottom no wonder big business loves them , site conditions have all

Most of Europe imports builders and carers and Germany's care system is built on imported labour.

If the main contractors insisted on an apprenticeship per brickie gang then everyone is on the same deal...

Apprenticeship system works for companies , obviously not gonna work for a subby on price, but if they want to build the house numbers they are talking about then they'll need to train up youngsters. Apprentices provide cheap labour , and will in time fill some of the skill shortages . Building industry seems far more reliant on foreign labour than engineering and tbh engineering in certain sectors has gone all in on recruiting apprentices.

Nah, I can imagine, I didn't mean in an educational environment, I certainly couldn't deal with a behaviour unit. I did a career day in the kids primary school and found that difficult public speaking isn't my forte, thankfully the bits and pieces I brought in drew questions for me to answer and I tried to give a brief insight into the trade. I only meant in the form of an apprentice and then they'd have to have a good work ethic or they'd be gone, so isn't most likely ....well done on giving those kids a shot sometimes it can just give them an option they'd never have thought of on their own.

The experience I've had was with an ex marine and I'd say with confidence he had the best work ethic of anyone I've met in my current industry and they lost him over a quid an hour's worth three of the rest all day....

Cheers , but in my world I'm not , plus my eyes have gone to shit along with my confidence to travel the country doing weld tests, it's a young guys game , but I can stick metal together, also my supervisor who is a kid mind , blows smoke up my ass as you put it because many in my game are bloody hopeless, I hope to bring on a youngster in a few years so the Germans and poles don't think we're all feck wits...We've had multiple generations of useless wankers bringing on youngsters it's no wonder we can't manage up UK jobs . Anyway I've some rusty box to grind , pics to follow....

Just saying.... Edited as I thought it was funny but in reality all that stuff is in work and I'm trying to fab some rusty box section and my toolbox consists of chalk, grinder and a combi square. If I wanted a roof doing I'd ask the guys doing it for a profession. As said I've turned my hand to a few things over the years , been around building work since a kid , built a few bits and pieces , fitted a couple of kitchens , but I'd have no hesitation in listening to the guys that do it day in day out. Sometimes we all like to have an input , on a variety of subjects , sometimes

  22. So I've decided to make myself a wood fired offset smoker, this may drag out somewhat as I'm hoping to use mostly reclaimed bits and pieces, I'll be stick welding it as I can't justify getting a mig atm, partly as a home smoker and possibly as a prototype if I decide to make a bigger one but I'll probably stop at this one....anyway so it begins, I purchased a knackered air compressor for £40, bought a rotary wire brush for a tenner so £50 in so far....2hrs in....
